But if it's not, I'd offer him a thousand over his cost (which is always lower than what I think his cost would be.) The one thing I wouldn't do if I could help it, would be to set foot inside a dealer showroom.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Knowing your dealership has to make some profit on the sale of the car, and knowing there is a certain percentage of markup on both the car and every option, if you were lucky enough to find a dealer who said "make your offer" what would you put on the table? Perhaps you spec out a new Porsche that invoice price says $85000 (vs MSRP of 100K). Do you offer up 5%, 10%, $5000, $7500? Or do you ask for the car at invoice, knowing a long and potentially arduous round of negotiating would begin? I don't think there are too many dream situations out there like this, but just out of curiosity, what would you do?

POST 2Original post

Buying a car is for most people more of a nightmare than a dream. So I'd first try to arm myself with knowledge. Know the dealer's costs. Know what options cost and list for. Then I think I'd try to find someone with excess inventory (Houston?) or who seemed user friendly (Suncoast?) I'd call and ask for the sales manager. And give him my best offer. If it's a car that's in high demand, and I can't wait, I'd be prepared to pay close to MSRP. Ouch. But if it's not, I'd offer him a thousand over his cost (which is always lower than what I think his cost would be.) The one thing I wouldn't do if I could help it, would be to set foot inside a dealer showroom. I bought my wife's E320 Mercedes Wagon new, on the phone and saved $5,000 over what my local dealer wanted. I bought my 2001 996 Cab (4,800 miles) over the phone and saved $5,000 over what their initial asking price was. Phone buying/Internet dealing takes guts and some belief in other people's honesty, but it's worked for me so far.http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/icons/icon7.gif

Does Porsche have a holdback plan like American and Jap companies? If not, 3% is a fair profit margin

POST 6Original post

In my experience in the NY metropolitan area, most of the Porsche dealers have so little allocation that there is very little pressure on them to deal. When I was shopping for an '02 cab in July, 2001, one of the dealers actually showed me the monthly allocations for each of the 996 models for each of the dealers in the NY area. Some only got one or two cars a month; in some months they get no allocation in some models such as the C4S. I wound up at Manhattan Motors which gets 6 cabs a month. It was the end of July and they hadn't sold all of their Sept. production allocation and I was able to get $3,300 off MSRP. So, I guess my advice would be to find a dealer with a good allocation and try to get to him at the end of the month before has to place his orders with the factory.
