Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm close to purchasing a 99 996 C2 but some of these transmission replacements are scaring me. What happens when the warrenty is up and I have to be dishing out of my own pocket. So for those of you that know the price of a new tranny, let me have it. TIA ! -Jon

POST 2Original post

Can't speak for a whole tranny and you don't say whether you've got a tip or 6-speed. On a manual tranny, clutch replacement is $600 for the Porsche clutch kit and then labor. Dealer got me for $1000 labor. I thought it was a warranty issue as all of a sudden my clutch went to floor, not a gradual thing. No warranty on wear parts. Surveyed independents afterward and could probably have gotten labor for about $400. BTW - replaced my clutch at 38K. I've heard of clutches being replaced as early at 8K and lasting as long as 60-80K. Brent

POST 3Original post

I do have a pre-99 build 996 and was wondering what are the symptoms for a blown transamission? I already have 25k on my car and it's still sweet. Does the transmission problems occur early on in its life or later on? I have driven on several DE events and it's been flawless(drive hard is my motto). It's a daily driver as well and especially in the nice terrains of San francisco it gets its share of abouse going up and down the hills and the occasional pothole but so far it has been quite durable. As saud before the clutch wear is dependent on driver for most part so don't think it would be covered under warranty. How much does a new transmission cost if that should happen?. If you plan to get a 99 build 996 make sure all TSB's been taken care of ie air bag lite/coolant expansion tank/rear seal leak which were the only things that was done on my car. I had no engine check lite problem(heard gas cap was an issue. Other things is center console hinge breakage is common. Options to look for-go for full leather interior so you won't worry about how cheap it looks(pretty nite/day with full leather) and traction control(only option available on the 99 build and it can be switched off completely unlike PSM). Regards and good luck. Mike
