I just had an Alpine 7893 w/ XM and an Alpine MP3/CD changer installed in my 996 Cab and my audio guy recommended leaving the stock amp unless I plan to do a complete speaker upgrade.
Leading evidence: 'harmon/becker (german) unit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'harmon/becker (german) unit' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend leaving the stock amp unless i plan' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also, I am not sure how you will end up being able to reconnect your dash microphone back into the audio system with a standard unit.

At that time, you will probably have no other option than to replace the amp with the headunit.

Thanks for the info...Does this mean that I need to replace the amp, if I want amp power with a new head unit?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I doubt a vehicle OEM will use RCA's in a car due to vibration, they are normally custom harness connectors with lots of pins, but still analog/line level in nonetheless.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have just purchased a brand new C4S, and I am looking to replace the stock BOSE head unit with an after market unit. Does anybody know if the stock unit is connected to the stock amp via RCA's or Wire Harness?
Thanks
2002 C4S (Speed Yellow)
Wire harness. I have not seen RCA's on an OEM headunit in quite a while. The interface from the headunit to the amplifier is line level output.
Also, Bose does not manufacuture the headunit. It is most likely a Harmon/Becker (German) unit. Bose designs the amplifier (hidden in the front against the firewall in the luggage compartment) and all of the speakers/transducers.
Bose merely has the company logo on the headunit and transducers per agreement with Porsche.
I'm also in the process of researching XM ready/MP3 headunits for my '02 C4S w/ Bose. For some reason i thought that the connection would be via RCA jacks also. If its a wiring harness and the replacement I chose has line-out RCA's, whats the best way to connect it? Are there adapters made for this?
Also, my understanding is that if the output from the headunit is line-out, I can keep the Bose amp and speakers. Is this thinking correct?
Thanks
Hello CJN and PorschePhan,
I would not recommend replacing the amplifier.
The amplifier is a DSP based unit (analog line level inputs) and is extensively (1000 points measured in the car) equalized/tuned to the vehicle interior and optimized for the Bose transducers/speakers.
If you end up replacing the amp, you will probably be disappointed in the soundstage and imaging you'll end up with, no matter how you try and equalize from the headunit with bass/treble/bal/fader/room modes, etc.
The amp accepts line level inputs from the headunit, so you should be able to find a stereo installer who can obtain a harness adapter/pinout diagram, or perhaps from the Porshe manuals.
I doubt a vehicle OEM will use RCA's in a car due to vibration, they are normally custom harness connectors with lots of pins, but still analog/line level in nonetheless.
Also, I am not sure how you will end up being able to reconnect your dash microphone back into the audio system with a standard unit.
The situation with the MY03 Porsches will be a LOT more complicated, due to the new vehicle telematics design which will be announced at the vehicle introduction. At that time, you will probably have no other option than to replace the amp with the headunit.
The newer German cars are coming thru with an optical network called MOST (plastic fiber optics connecting EVERYTHING), so the connection between the headunit and amplifier will be optical and I don't think you will see aftermarket optical output headunits anytime soon!
This is all being driven as more and more electronics are being put into cars and need to communicate with one another (headunits, amplifiers, DVD's, cellphones, navigation units, full 5.1 digital surround sound in the caretc).

Of course, it is easier for an installer to replace the headunit and amplifiers and just modify the harness wiring as necessary rather than try to interface to the Bose amplifier.
I work for Bose as a design engineer and designed the amplifier for Porsche.
Ended up getting a tour of the factory last time I was over there, incredibly cool.
Hope to go back soon for the launch of the MY03 cars, since I invested a year into the design of that system.
Best of luck with your cars.
I'm with ltc, I would leave the amp alone. I just had an Alpine 7893 w/ XM and an Alpine MP3/CD changer installed in my 996 Cab and my audio guy recommended leaving the stock amp unless I plan to do a complete speaker upgrade. The amp/speaker set up is optimum for the current set up.
