POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

not even sure i want to post this, but.......i DID search; however, i couldn't find what i'm looking for... i'm new to H2O cooled porsches. just bought my first porsche....'03 coupe it has the original clutch, RMS and IMS; and it has 108,500 miles on it. obviously, i'm doing the clutch, RMS and the IMS with in the next 2 wks so...the question is.. does porsche offer a replacement for the IMS or should i buy the LN bearing? if the factory one lasted 100,000; it sounds like a good replacement to me. Of course, i did see an 02 boxster with 18,000 miles on it with a complete bearing failure....looks just like the pictures....thx in advance

POST 2Original post

IMO, LN is superior to the factory and others out there. I've read where the factory bearing is supplied by a variety of makers from different countries of origin. Besides the LN is high grade ceramic and more resistant to wear with an updated race.

POST 3Original post

Welcome the water world! I'm assuming that the clutch is in bad shape and the RMS is leaking... Otherwise you would not be having this work done. If so, and since you are only another hour or two of additional labor + parts for an IMS upgrade, it is a good idea. General consensus is LN is the way to go... Though no doubt some will disagree. LN avoids the factory bearing's potential to lose internal lubrication. Not sure Porsche ever solved this completely, as some early 997s suffered IMS failure. And take a ride up to Cary's Waverly Place shopping center on the first of the month for Cars and Coffee. Right off 64 and US 1. Great turnout.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

clutch seems EASY TO ME to engage and disengage....it's silky smooth pushing it in and VERY grainy when it's coming out...the gentleman at leith porsche said it's hard to push in and is probably going to go soon....i don't have any idea how easy the clutch actuation should be, but apparently it's hard...so, i'm going to change it anyway....it's got 108,000 miles on it....i have no oil leaks at all, so i don't know if the RMS leaks or not...but why not replace both of them while i'm in there...looks like the RMS and IMS kit from suncoast comes with the 3 pronged bearing cover and not the actual bearing...could be wrong...thanks for info!

POST 5Original post

Lots of good info in this discussion. Read this thread on renntech.org. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...s-ims-kit.html

POST 6Original post

The IMS bearims is pretty much a standard size bearing and they are available in a ceramic hybrid configuration. It's up to you if you want to use one, I did, or pay the premium for an LN unit.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 10097303

Suncoast's "kit" has a new IMSB cover plate with the updated seal which your car may already have. Porsche only sells the IMSB installed in a new IMS (Intermediate shaft) requiring engine disassembly to install. The LN IMSB is much stronger & comes with a billet IMSB cover plate.

POST 8Original post

LN is supposed to be releasing a new replacement for the IMSB in the next couple of months. You may want to hold tight till they release it. They said there will be details in next month's Panorama.

POST 9Original post

I'd make sure your mechanic has done these before or is very experienced with Porsche in general. While the job is straightforward and can be done in a day, it has to be done competently or it can end in disaster. I believe I read somewher that one Porsche dealer was NOT using the factory IMSB and going with the LN upgrade.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 10098547

I believe Jake said they would only be installing this new IMS solution in their shop at the beginning to make sure its being done correctly and monitor it until releasing it to other shops down the road.

POST 11Original post

I personally went with a factory IMS replacement when I did my clutch, flywheel, RMS, and assorted junk. But I will say the only reason I went with factory is because it was available same day, and LN was not. I didn't want my P-car in my shop for too long. This way I was able to do everything overnight the same day I blew my clutch and had it back on the road the next morning

POST 12Original post

If your IMS has lasted 108k miles, and still has not failed, I wouldnt see any use to replace it with a non Porsche part. Seems to last extremely well!

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

just did A LOT of talking to Leith Porsche in Cary...they explained the differences, took time with me and i'm going with the LN...they have it, the clutch and all the other ancillary items that i need in stock...they also explained that, if i wished to get the porsche bearing; i'd have to buy the whole intermediate shaft....give them a day's notice, drop off my car and they'll have a loaner for me! I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!! THEY HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND MY GREATEST EXPECTATIONS! i took my car in for an air filter last saturday and they treated me like i've bought a turbo S cab from them for the past 10 yrs!! i won't go ANYWHERE else!

POST 14Original post

Yes I expect that they would treat you like royalty when you took your car in for an air filter. They saw $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ signs there alright.

POST 15Original post

Took it to the dealer for an airfilter?!?!? Time to hand in your mancard.

not so fast! i've changed 2 of the HVAC servos, replaced the little belt between the 2 distributor caps and installed a rear muffler bypass pipe from fabspeed; on my dad's 92 C2 cab .... put a cab cable and gear drive on both sides, adjusted the top and installed the "G" pipe bypass on the other C2 cab... by NO means am i even a half-*** DIYer...i just read the directions.....and got lucky....but, that's as far as i want to go on DIY thing....i just don't have the time or drive right now, so i'm going to the dealer....btw, this is my first time with a H20 cooled porsche they did install the windshield wiper blades for me!!!

POST 17Original post

Hello Meares - I personally don't believe that your manhood has been damaged by choosing a dealer to look after your car. A good relationship with a good dealer can really pay off if you ever need them in your corner. I have been one of those guys who has allowed the dealer to do everything on my cars (except they are NOT allowed to EVER wash them . When a 4th gear sychro went on my C2, Porsche tried to hold their ground and would only approve a rebuild by the dealer. The car was under CPO and I politely yet persistently stated that I wanted a Porsche factory rebuilt transmission installed. It took the dealer about 5 days to get approval, but I did get what I wanted. The dealer just replaced my clutch and AOS, along with the LN IMSB "while we were in there". The OE bearing appeared to be just fine with 75K miles on it. Plus - I like the fact that I have all service records for my car and that all the work has been done to Porshce specs. I've seen some pretty Krazy DIY stuff on Porsches, best was a rotor missing a screw because the original snapped upon removal, I'm sure Porsche made sure that extra hardware was engineered in and that these cars don't really need everything installed the way Porsche built the cars. And oh yeah - the zip tie holding a brake line to a strut was a most ingeneous DIY repair. However, not to sound too confusing, I actually have training and experience in automotive theory and mechanics and do work on my other cars. So............ bought myself the Bentley manual and might just give replacing my front brake rotors and pads a DIY try. Whether I try it or not, succeed or fail, I believe my manhood will remain intact. Happy motoring - for me, and I am not saying this is how it should be for every other Porsche owner, it is driving these cars that is what it is all about. Actually had some fun driving home in the snow in the C2 today, main roads were nuts, a good bit of ice and goofy SUV tanks on and off the road. Once I hit the country twisties near my home though, it was actually fun.

Good timing, you posted as I was typing. Hate to admit it, but I do replace my owner wiper blades and swap out my summer and winter tires. Maybe that will get me a couple of punches on my mancard.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 10099113

I bet it took longer to drive to the dealer and check your car in than it would take to install the air filter? It is like 3 Phillips screws...

POST 22Original post

I do absolutely everything on my cars myself. I don't necessarily enjoy it as much as some people, but I do it because I have a fully equipped shop. Also I can do it in a timely fashion, and know exactly what happens to my car. If I didn't have a shop, chances are it would be a dealership car

POST 23Original post

Getting back to the OP...I did an LN bearing upgrade the shortly after buying my car...did the AOS, clutch and added LSD to the tranny while I was in there. Keeping the old bearing was not an option I would even consider. However, when they took it out it was fine. :-)

No shame in giving work to the working. But you might be better off finding a Porsche specialist instead of paying dealer parts and labor rates. Just for fun I went into the dealer for a full diagnostic once I was approaching major maintenance territory (clutch, shocks, etc.). They charged me like an hour of labor, and checked everything top to bottom, but their "estimate" for the repairs and parts was nearly equal to the value of the car. Judging by the service manager's tone, it was almost like we both knew that dealerships just don't do big repairs on out of warranty cars. and as far as the IMS issue, I personally believe dealerships have been a contributor in this problem. They've recommended an oil that engine experts refuse to use, encouraged intervals that were too long according to same experts, never adivsed their customers of issues/options when high mileage cars came in for clutch jobs nor did they advise their customers that having the car sit for long intervals could be an issue because of the inherernt IMS flawes.

which were not in the interest of the owner's engine but more the factory's legal interests. Instructing the dealer service departments to take on different practices and warn their customers midstream would have been an addmission of a potentially catastrophic flawe. They simply left it to the consumer to educate themselves of what most casual owners would qualify as an unknown unknown.

HOLD ON!!!!..... i'm going tomorrow morn so the dealer can change the oil!!!
