Reported cause

I almost got smoked last Friday afternoon, was stopped for about 5 seconds at the off ramp as the third car, all of a sudden I hear tire squealing approaching from somewhere behind me, looked up quickly in the RVM and saw a few cars coming up from behind, but I couldn't initially pick up which car was trying to stop, it turned out to be an older VW Passat with brakes nearly locked up skidding towards me while trying to stay in the radiused lane of the off ramp, I slam the car in first gear and nearly jumped on the gas to shoot the car off to the left to get out of the way.

Suggestion

A car got smoked spectacularly by a dump truck right in front of me today at just over 60MPH, I think both were changing into the same lane at the same time from either side of the empty lane, althought I didn't see the car as it was on the other side of the dump truck from me, the car must have been about parallel with the front of the truck.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Going South on hwy 49 today I got rear ended when making a right turn . An older guy in a new Lexus hit me going about 65. Thank goodness no one was hurt. My 996 took a hard hit but kept us in tact.

POST 2Original post

Oh, crap. Glad to hear everyone is ok. Bumper, rear quarter, deck lid, can pointing the wrong way.... looks pretty serious. Surprised no air bag deployed in the lexus ?

POST 5Original post

wow, looks like a clear day, just bad timing on the other driver's part. hopefully, the other guy is fully insured and either the car gets properly repaired or if it's totalled, you get to upgrade. good luck and look into a Diminished Value claim on top of the repair cost.

POST 6Original post

Yikes, what a total bummer. GL with the insurance, etc., Glad that you were okay and not pushed into oncoming traffic.

POST 7Original post

Glad you are OK. Get the Porsche put back together so that you can enjoy it.

POST 8Original post

WOW, that accident wiped out 10% of the GDP of Mississippi. Glad everyone is ok. The engineers did their jobs.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everybody, Yes the guy does have insurance, we both have State Farm, I don`t anticipate any problems. I was surprised that the Lexus` airbag did not deploy also. I`ll talk to State Farm tomorrow and go from there. David

POST 10Original post

Wow, glad to hear you are OK. Probably just a little rubbing compound and dentless repair, and you'll be right back on the road!

POST 11Original post

Glad you're okay. The damage to your 996 doesn't look as extensive as I expected for such a hard impact. I hope the repairs go smoothly. I don't recall where I read this, but I thought that airbags had a speed zone in which they inflate. I know that an impact under 11 mph will not typically cause airbag deployment. I believe that there is an upper limit too. Over 60 mph (just guessing on the number) the airbag doesn't really add anything. If you aren't wearing a seatbelt at that speed, the airbag won't save you.

POST 12Original post

Sorry to see this happen, David. Luckily no one was injured. Good luck with insurance, repairs, etc.

POST 13Original post

It's hard to tell, but from the front picture it looks like your rear quarter panel is bent in front of the rear wheel? I hope that's not the case - might indicate a total loss....

POST 14Original post

Pretty good hit to both vehicles. Glad to hear no one was hurt. Too bad about the Porsche, hopefully after it is repaired all will be good again.

POST 15Original post

Sorry to hear about the accident. I've seen very few 996's or any Porsches around here in MS. A few 944's. Looks like a total loss with damage up to the drivers door, it doesn't take much with these cars. Sorry to hear, will you get another if it is a total loss? Haven't ever seen you driving in the area. Would love to meet sometime for a fun drive around the Gulf Coast!

POST 16Original post

Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad you're ok. Let us know how things go with State Farm.

POST 17Original post

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Glad to see that everyone is okay. Thank goodness that Porsches are very safe and solidly-built cars- you just proved the point.

POST 18Original post

Airbags are controlled by a microprocessor with a very sophisticated routine that examines accelerometer inputs, speed etc. The program is designed to prevent deploying the airbag when the situation does not call for it. This is particularly important because many accidents have secondary impacts, for example, when a car gets hit and pushed into traffic. If the airbag was not needed in the primary impact, it may be needed in the secondary

POST 19Original post

Another thank you for a no injury experience. You can replace the car and maybe, just maybe, have fun doing so! Best of luck

POST 20Original post

wow great to hear you are ok. Was he on the phone or something?

POST 21Original post

David, You are very calm about this, many others would have reacted a lot more "excited". Fortunately he managed to stop just in time without hitting me amidst a cloud of tire smoke, he later changed lanes and stopped a bit ahead of me in traffic when I noticed he still had winter tires on the car.......... He completely avoided eye contact, probably because I was shaking my fist at him when he had first stopped behind me barely missed hitting me.........

POST 22Original post

He was too busy to make eye contact....wondering where he was going to get some fresh shorts.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not much to report yet. I`ve got a rental car, but still waiting for the adjuster. State Farm is trying to make this as painless as possible so far. David

POST 24Original post

A car got smoked spectacularly by a dump truck right in front of me today at just over 60MPH, I think both were changing into the same lane at the same time from either side of the empty lane, althought I didn't see the car as it was on the other side of the dump truck from me, the car must have been about parallel with the front of the truck. I heard a light impact, and a fraction of a second later the car went spinning across the front of the truck and in front of my lane, he must have done a couple of donuts one way and a whole bunch of major fish-tailing before getting this Chrysler Sebring under control, didn't hit the concrete medium although he came close, what a piece of driving!! I had about 30 feet of clear space in front of me when the car first spun around the truck, the driver behind me slowed down quickly allowing me to also slow down rapidly to avoid any contact with the spinning car, there were no debries either, just a couple of truck tire marks on the side of the car and a deflated rear tire from the spin-out. No injuries to anyone involved. I pulled off with them and waited for the Provincial Police to arrive and gave my statement, everything went normal other than I noticed the nice lady cop has a .223 M-16 Carbine between the two front seats, the 30-round translucent polymer magazine was in the rifle and full loaded with bullets. I didn't think things have gotten that bad in the Toronto area?! I made a comment about the AR and she chuckled and said it was her "Hat Holder". Have no dash-cam else it would have been a great piece of footage.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay, the car was not totaled , So the insurance company is going to pay to put it back in shape. More info later. David

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cornbread, I sent You an e-mail David

POST 27Original post

Make sure you get diminished value which should be significant.

POST 28Original post

Too bad .. if it is fixable, +1 for making sure insurance covers lost resale value. This will show up in carfax if you try to sell later, making that much harder to do ....

POST 29Original post

sorry to hear that. Doesn't look like the lexus was doing 65mph at the time of inpact though or it would likely have been far more severe. As to diminished value...good luck. I've found this to be an extremely difficult thing to do.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 9791726

Really, my experience went like this..... Wdc- "...and what about diminished value" Other person's insurance co-"we cannot proceed on that until after the repairs have been made". A couple of weeks after the repairs were made the insurance company sent me the appraiser's assement and a week after that a diminished value check.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, I will definitely check about the diminished value of the car.I was not aware of that coverage. But now I have to prepare for Isaac. Hope I don`t have to make a claim because of this frigin storm. Thanks again, David

POST 32Original post

I am still working through a State-Farm claim...good luck! They are trying to cut corners. At least our cars are hard to find used parts for...believe me, they tried very hard to find used parts.

POST 36Original post

What a bad story but a good ending. (no pun intended)

POST 37Original post

David Wilson Glad to see you got your car back and it looks like they did a great job !! Enjoy

POST 38Original post

Very sorry to see the photos but pleased that no one was injured. To me it looks like a total write off. Cost of Porsche material and repair men will add up to more than the car is worth. Hope all works out well for you.

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Andy, I actually got it back about a month ago. It just took me this long to post. It is great to have it back. David

POST 40Original post

Nice to see your Porsche repaired and ready to drive.

POST 41Original post

Glad they got it back to you, looks good. Any noticeable difference in drive quality? Cheers, DS

POST 42Original post

Wow... they made an awesome looking repair. How is it handling now?

POST 43 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It drives great just like before. I will have to take it back. The engine bonnet does not pop up like it should and the backup lights don`t work. Still waiting for devalue check.

POST 44Original post

Was curious how the color match looks in person as mine is midnight blue and one never knows when It might take a hit and need done= and color matching always scares me lol.I had my front bumper done and it matched very well but I consider that lucky.Your car looks as good as new in photos enjoy!

POST 45Original post

Glad your ok sorry to hear about the accident but they did a great job putting it back together.

POST 46 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

rmc1148 The color was blended very well. I can`t tell the difference. David
