I removed the cables which hold the wing up and used bolts to hold the wing in the up position.

If you really want to remove weight - replace the factory OEM engine cover and wing.

I removed my rear wing motor for clearance on a project. Currently the wing is in the raised position with the motor removed and it seems stable, but wind at speed will definitely lower it.
Is there a way to lock the rear wing in the up position?
Thanks
Long term.
I'm waiting to complete it and make a nice write up before starting a thread. But I am looking for some info along the way.
so it sits in this position:
up or down...none of this 1/2 way stuff
I have a motor and guide assy I will sell hella cheap....you could just use parts and tack, glue, clamp in place
I am a tad of the rolling eyes crowd but the loss of weight is intriguing
Hmmm, I hope you are planning on holding onto that car as removing functional pieces of it in the name of weight savings is just going to turn it into a ghetto fabulous POS.
Somebody had to say it.....
It is a mechanical system. Two rods powered by an electric motor, push outwards (up) and pull inwards (down). I might have to see where full up is and fabricate some plates to not allow the arms to pull inwards.
Thanks for the heads up that it's not fully extended, I'll pull it out further before making any modifications.
I have the full system (sitting next to the car), so I don't need any parts, but thanks for the offer.
This is only a minor part to the project. But
How is manually fixing the rear wing in a position that I want it any different than you using the button under the dash to move it to a position you want it in? Furthermore, how does that make it ghetto fabulous?
Did you remove all the heat shield that was behind your rear bumper ? I assume you plan on putting it back or you risk to have your rear bumper melt away when you park your car :S
White out, go ahead and gut it strip it etc. Its YOUR car... We used to see a lot more guys trying to drop weight off these cars. Not so much anymore. Too bad really.
My exhaust is routed differently than stock and no cats are underneath the bumper. Melting the bumper is not a concern.
It's a Porsche that is worth less than a mildly optioned Chevrolet Sonic; so modifying it really doesn't have a negative effect financially IMO. Dropping weight on the other hand, that has a positive effect on my view of the car, so it's totally worth it to me.
Aside from power seats and sun/moon roof, my car has no other factory added weight options.
Oooh, there's a lot more than just a simple weight reduction going on here.
Since the wire harness isn't in the car right now, the best bet to fix the wing up in the short term would probably be to extend the wing by powering the motors with some jumped wires and then leaving it unplugged when you hook it back up.
LOL!
The chassis harness is in tact. I used the motor to set the wing in the up position. But when I removed the motor, the wing is movable by hand. I was hoping that the arms would be locked in the up position. Unfortunately it isn't that way.
Have you tried leaving the motor in place and removing the fuse while the wing is in up position? No wheight savings there but the wing will definetly stay the way you want it when you take the fuse out.
If DGK didn't already have a 996 turbo, I would title my car under that. But I'm going to embrace it, however, aiming more towards redneck then ghetto.
nice work on reviving it.
Most of the weight isn't in the wing motor - it's in the engine cover. If you really want to remove weight - replace the factory OEM engine cover and wing. Just doing this saved me a lot of weight. I can't recall how much but it was more then 20lbs at least. The other area is in the weight of the exhaust cans - going aftermarket such as Fabspeed or other brands can save more weight again - although not to the same percentage as a cover/wing change, but less is good anyway. The heat shields I've never thought about as mine isn't a track car but I've had mine out and I don't believe they weight enough to matter for street settings. I'm down to a lower weight as it is now as 99's were pretty much at the original design weight and then the bloating begins there after as year by year things get added as the car remains in production. I'm changing to a light weight battery in the spring to reduce some weight up front and I'm currently at an overall 2845lbs with 1/4 tank of gas and front spare removed. What is your target weight your after?
No real goals on how much weight I will lose, but shaving off as much as reasonably possible.
So far, I removed:
Sound deadening from the engine bay.
Air injection system
Engine bay fan
Trunk trim panel (inner)
Rear bumperettes
Exhaust shields
Exhaust mounts
Rear seats
I plan on running straight pipes from the stock exhaust manifolds, but a killer deal on some headers just popped up, so I may go that route. But keeping the system light enough where I don't have to run an exhaust hanger (no rear crossover). It will be significantly lighter than stock.
If I can find a buyer for the seats & steering wheel, I will be going with some lighter aftermarket units. Then coilovers to help with the unsprung weight (and suspension tuning).
I'm leaving the trunk/rear wing as it is for winter, but in the spring I will be removing material to take full advantage of the vents (which will also drop weight).
Pardon me for asking, but why would you remove the ability for the wing to be adjustable? Wether its by the switch or auto? If your not turning this into a stripped track / race car where every extra pound matters, what exactly is the point? Why do people feel the need to F#%@ up a 996 when there goal is supposedly to "improve" it?
White Out: The following pic's are from a gentlemen building a track car in my area. THIS is called getting serious about reducing weight!
Thread is here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...r-project.html
Thanks for the link. I will follow that thread.
I'm not asking to remove the ability for the wing to be adjustable, but seeing if there is a way to manually lock it in the up position. Dropping weight from the upper-most rearward part of a rear engined car is a bad thing?
How exactly does this fvck up the 996?
Don't worry about the naysayers White Out - do what you like with your car. It's yours and its appeal really only matters to you and the car's next owner.
R
Have you considered a fixed OEM wing? I'm not sure about the weight savings, but along w/ a front splitter it may provide additional downforce to improve handling at track speeds. I have this wing installed on my C4 cab...
White Out, What I meant was, your car is too nice and straight to trash as a stripped track car. Why not find a salvage/wrecked one for this project. There are many up for auction, including GT models.
Bordin you dont know what I was referring too. BTW, your not a paying member, do you even own a Porsche?
Looking at the 996 diagram for the rear wing it looks like it uses a motor similar to a wiper or power window motor. So you should be able to remove the motor from the gearbox and pin the gear in place to stop it from lowering. You dont save as much weight as possible but the heavy motor is gone.
Why does it matter if he is a paying memeber or not? You are as abresive as they come. Write inults in one post and then backpedling in the next. It's his car, he can do as he pleases. I personally like the idea or reducing weight. Much cheaper than to add HP.
I think you can take out the header to get to the spot welds and then remove the whole thing including sunroof as one piece. He's said that he is replacing the roof with a carbon piece. Not sure if the car will remain street legal or not but I do know it's his track car as he is putting in a cage after so getting the weight out before hand helps when he puts the cage back in and this add's weight back in.
I think pulling weight out can become an addiction for some people but I get the reducing weight on a track car although a good friend of mine who is a pro racer once told be he could save people a lot of money on upgrades to their cars by giving them a days in car instruction to make them faster. I sort of agree with that as we see people come out for track days all the time in high end 'super cars' or mod'd up P cars and get passed by a guy in 2004 Honda Civic or well driven 944.
Read this in an article from Excellence; "Removing 33 pounds of unsprung weight at the wheels is equal to losing 198 pounds from the body of the car". By the way, what's wrong with a little weight reduction in our Porsches whether you track it or not? It's the process that's enjoyable whether you are wrenching or modifying, that's what makes ownership of a 911 so much fun.
True, I don't think the next owner will give much thought about the rear wing being manual. The good part is, if he does, there are lots of options to swap the trunk for a different style.
I like the look of the retractable wing. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Buy a wrecked car to preserve a sub $20k, 13 year old base 996? There is nothing special about an early 996 to prevent it from being modified.
+1
Yeah, it uses a small electric motor that moves two rods (one to each side) outward and inward; which controls the wing height. With the motor removed, the rods are able to move freely (wing won't move on its own, but I feel that air pressure at speed will push the wing down). I'm trying to lock those rods in the up position.
I might just make a little bracket at the base of the plastic runners and prevent the cable from moving.
Perhaps something like this would work? You attach the rods at each end of the bar. The bar pivots in the center and you lock it in place with the nut. That way you can still retain the function of raising and lowering the wing.
The only problems I can think of are
- I dont own a 996
- because of this I dont know where it would be feasible to mount the stud needed for the nut to hold the bar.
It's a little different set up than what you posted the diagram of, but I can make a bracket similar in design and allow for the wing to be adjusted.
Seriously, that little diagram was the 'light bulb' I needed.
Imo000, because what I suspected was just confirmed. Thats why.
White Out, You sure have a clean 996 for you not to think its special. I suppose some have sentimental value and some have $ value. Didnt know the back story on yours, just thought it looked too nice to track. If you wanna get serious about track I would look into a damaged GT. Saves you a lot of work.
What is there to confirm? It's clearly stated under everyones name if they are a memeber or not. Trying to stir up some $hit? What does it matter if he is or isn't a memeber?
It's a 996. I love my car and it's my favorite vehicle I've owned to date, but if I wrapped mine around a tree I could have a comparable one in the driveway by the end of the week. You can buy a decent 996 for less money than a well-sorted Evo or STI nowadays. You are not a beautiful, one-of-a-kind snowflake.
"What is there to confirm? It's clearly stated under everyones name if they are a memeber or not. Trying to stir up some $hit? What does it matter if he is or isn't a memeber?"
Your anger has clouded your reading ability. You obviously did not read where he posted he doesnt even own a 996. Dude, realx. I wont be visiting Canada this year because of you.
Why indeed..
Surprised no one has clued in yet with that the project is.
I know for the fact that he is not wrecking this car but only making it uncountable times better.
People need to get off there tiny high-horses and let things fall into place before making un-needed comments.
Can't wait to see it on the road!
I dug into the wing a little more today. Looks like I will be drilling a small hole in the plastic runner, through the spoiler arm, then putting a bolt through it to hold the wing in whatever position I want it set at. Super simple, cheap, and lightweight.
Thanks!
While the GT2 wing looks great, I spent $2 to make the wing fixed.
This spring, I will modify it for better airflow. But for winter, I would like to keep some snow out of the engine bay.
Update on the rear wing:
I removed the cables which hold the wing up and used bolts to hold the wing in the up position. If the bolts are removed, the wing will slide down into the lowered position. This dropped a few pounds (3-5) from the trunk lid.
I read this entire thread and was actually in your corner up until the "pile of ****" comment...I do find it very funny that you may not know that many chebby LSs grenade...HAHA...Gooood luuuck!!!
You can't seriously tell yourself that the LS1 has anywhere near the amount of mechanical failures as the 3.4 M96 in 100% stock form (IMS bearings, oval pistons, cracked cylinder heads, leaking spark plug boots, AOS failure, cracked blocks).
The 3.4M96 is a joke of an engine; in reliability and ability to make power.
I'm definitely not the only Porsche fan who isn't a fan of the 3.4M96.
I bought it as a cheap daily driver and did the engine swap to make the car reliable, cheap maintenance, and add some power.
Just think what you could have done to a 3.4 for the same money. Jake R. engine for example. you dont think they can make the 3.4 Reliable? Now your gonna have a mismatched hybrid? What the ?????
A mismatched hybrid, WTF is that?
You're off your rocker if you think that a 3.4 will ever be able to compete with an LS1. M96 is good for making coffee tables, not reliable power.
FYI, my car had a working M96 with new RMS, upgraded IMS bearing; Fabspeed exhaust; and Fabspeed intake.
This:
Looks better than this:
IMHO, an engine swap, hybrid conversion is more suited to an old Jeep or something. The second picture keeps the car a Porsche. Personally, I dont get it. why mess up a good car?
"Hybrid" is Renegades description. Not mine.
Even if your cost estimate was true (which its not), with the 3.4 it would still be a Porsche.
You've probably seen this thread before since you are doing the conversion. If you haven't check it out it has some great info in it.
http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...onversion.html
How does adding horsepower/torque and lowering reliability issues mess up a good car? I don't get it?
My total cost for the swap. . . How about you post up the cost of the 3.4 build, install, etc and I'll post up my costs.
I've spoken with him a few times regarding some aspects of the build.
I dont know if the Chevy is anymore reliable than a propery built 3.4 but like everyone said, its your car. JR is able to get "reliable power" out of an M96 engine.
Im sure yours will be unique because you dont see many. No offense by "Hybrid". Thats a Renegade term. Best of luck.
Their business name is Renegade Hybrids, nowhere else does it call the car a hybrid. They do use the term "conversion" often though. Nowhere does it say "mismatched hybrid" as you referred to the swap. If it makes you feel better, we can refer to it as the bastard build. I'm cool with that.
Continuing to think that the M96 can ever be as reliable as an LS1 (or any small block LSx) is unrealistic.. The LSx is one of the most reliable engines in existence; where the M96 has a stigma worse than the Corvair.
As for power, the LS1 in my car will make around 320rwhp/340rwtq as it sits. If I went with a simple cam/valve spring/pushrod upgrade, 400whp isn't far away; longtube headers are $180 on eBay (another 20whp/tq). In case you're not good with math, that's about 70whp/150wtq over the M96 before mods. And all for less money than upgrading an IMS bearing if the M96 isn't blown up.
Get off your Porsche high horse man.. He daily drives a lamborghini when he wants his purist power.... Just because it says porsche doesnt mean its gods greatest gift to the streets.. Its his ride he should do as he pleases with it.
Your funny... Theres hundreds of vettes and camaros and lsx powered bmws all over making crazy amounts of power without "grenading" as you say
O.Guser, welcome and thanks for signing up to set me straight but your too late. See the prior posts where I have "seen the light". Im sure his Lambo is awesome too! Cool to have a DD Lambo.
Are you getting a modified oil pan? How much lower does the oil pan hang down? Are you ditching the A/C? How are you planning on rigging up the instrument cluster?
Thanks you for doin the math fo me, as I isnt to gud at it...
Well, at least you recognize that the 996 platform is better than say a C5
. Otherwise, you'd buy a used Corvette as they are cheap as hell...
Just because he pulled his M96 before disaster struck I don't think makes him any less of a Porsche fan.
There are many aspects to these cars that make them wonderful. I don't think he should be shunned for replacing one of the most terrible engine Porsche ever installed in a car for something that is proven much better by every one expect the people with the aforementioned motor.
Now if this car had a working Meztger..
F-body oil pan works. It sits significantly higher than the rear crossmember.
Keeping A/C.
Using M96 oil pressure sensor for gauge & warning light
Wiring LS1 ECU to the Porsche harness for tach and water temp.
The stock 996 chassis harness controls speedometer
If I got real tricky, I could wire up the oil level sensor too.
C5 is better for going fast for cheap. But it's a C5, which as a previous Viper owner, I cannot bring myself to drive.
This.
If the Murci engine blew (which they don't often do); I would either look for an LP640 6.5 litre or send the car down to UR for some insanity.
