He clearly showed he installed European made Reins which are an OE manufacturer for Porsche, and sold by Pelican.

I will clean her car out again this weekend - and that makes her happy, so - I guess it's worth it in the end -

She doesn't understand that my 911 is not a station wagon that should be filled with suitcases, or that it's ok to load my Porsche with food and salads when we go to a friends house.

Even doing my own work, and buying parts from Pelican, Sunset & Suncoast, I have spent $1000s DIYing over the last 5 years and the car has always run "well".
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

All of a sudden she is running like crap! I took my MY 2000 996 C2 in for a state safety inspection last
Thursday and noted how smooth it was idling during the inspection. Later that day I stared to hear a knocking sound at idle.
The knock became worse. Now I am scared to drive the car as it sounds so bad.
I am having it towed to Momentum Porsche on Tuesday morning. The car has 44,000 miles on her and is due for the 15,000
mile checkup. Thought I would have Porsche do the 15,000 mile service and fix the bad idle.
Hero to zero in less than a day?
dyu have any idea where the knocking is coming from? Theres not a mechanic still under the hood from the inspection is there?
Phone the garage and ask are they missing a mechanic... You could turn that sub woofer up so you dont hear the knocking lol
I take offense to that...
No CEL, don't have a code reader. BTW, there is no code to read!
I never expected my 12 year old Porsche to be like new. That is why I take such good care of it......................................................
Just no respect around here.
The dealer will give me their opinion tomorrow. So long.
OK, My hero is a zero today. Will find out how much over 0.0 it is tomorrow at the dealer. RATS!! I hate going to the dealer with their $100,000 plus cars in the showroom.
Was it a knocking -- or a tapping --- to me knocking is lower frequency in Hz (internal engine/crank)
and tapping is a higher frequency (valve), A whacking sound could be a chain that has broken,
or a tensioner/chain guide that has given out.
You already have the IMSR -- so that's a good start. Does the occurrence rate track the RPM?
Don't be surprised if they come abck and just tell you you need a new engine -- its very costly
for them to go beyond basic diagnosis
If you end up having to have some engine issues addressed
my buddy in Austin rebuilds M96 engines and is pretty reasonable ($75/hr).
So anything including a compete rebuild is right up his alley.
Mike
I would be very suprised if the dealer says I need a new engine!
it was running great last week. 30K service done a year ago,
IMS replaced just a few months ago. That is what is so strange,
it was running so good. Then within an hour it started this idle
knocking and I just had to shut her down.
Will find out soon.
Sometimes it is something relatively minor like the gas cap mentioned above, or maybe some vacuum hose that fell off, or some water in the gas, to the MAF sensor needs a squirt of cleaner. The last is exactly what happened to me a couple years ago. Just needed some MAF cleaner and it ran fine again. No CEL warning, just started running rough.
Sounds like you are driving your car enough to keep things lubed up. That is a VERY good thing.
Had it towed to Momentum Porsche. They called back and said to get some decent sleep tonight, just the water pump!
:
So for around $1400 I am back in the saddle again! That is a Christmas gift I can appreciate!
The $1400 is for parts and installation. And it is $1400+
The car is there and diagnosis is free. It is mine again tomorrow afternoon.
I can get rid of this Chevy Impalla 4 door POS and drive a real car
again! I am feeling much better already, just thinking this...........................
Thanks for standing by me SD! This is a tough bunch around here. I thought maybe some of the more mature members might have some wisdom to share but I see that is not the case. Got to know where you are posting. Any way, I think I have contributed to the knowledge base here. When the water pump goes south, expect a knocking that gets your attention. When someone says , my beautiful 996 just started making this horrible knocking sound, now you can ask, is it your water pump.
Krazy...not everyone has the time, space, knowledge or inclination to work on their cars. Enough. We get the point. You are clearly Rembrandt with a wrench. We can't all be that freakin smart. Relax dude. In a very short time you have managed to **** off members in 2 forums. Of course, that is your plan, but I am tired of my email notifications blowing up because you like to stir the pot. I suggest you chill...or move on.
silent majority here:
then why bother continuing to comment on posts when you have no clue? and reread his original post...he wasnt looking for a diagnosis just lamenting the fact that his car is broken and needs to be checked out.
you have consistently diagnosed problems incorrectly on here and have offered bad product referrals more than once (the last being engine mounts made in china) and have successfully and continuously rubbed people the wrong way on multiple forums. all the while blasting people for not doing all the work themselves and further rubbing in 200 v 1400.
take a step back from the forums for a bit and just stop posting.
yup that seems to be the theme with the majority of your posts...its the other person who misinterpreted your written words.
and i dont really care if youre offended or not...
I'm glad it was just a water pump. I agree that some major failure was unlikely. But it really can be hard to give thoughtful feedback with some kinds of symptoms.
I wouldn't worry about the $1400. When your car gets towed in, you usually pay full price for parts and labor. Often not a lot of negotiation possible....you're just happy they figured it out and hope they do a good job.
However, given that it's the water pump, ask to see the pump and visually inspect the impellor to see if pieces are missing from the plastic vanes. If so, I'd want to know what they did to back flush the cooling system to try to get any fragments out of the heads which can cause them to overheat and warp.
Glad it wasn't more serious.
great news - easy fix - very happy to hear this
and the mechanic was good to you - the car runs great (or will) so it's totally worth the money to get it back without having to deal with very clod - dirty hands and being really stuck in the dark out in your driveway while the snow begins to fall and you discovered you need a hose clamp, and the parts store is closed
right
not everyone like DIY projects and even those that do, dont often do anything more the oil changes and basic things - dont worry about it - how come you think your mechanic has a shop - he likes it, let him do it....grab a brew and watch some Monday night football (if you like that) - I'm hangin with my dog....might crack open a brew myself
Glad you are on the road to recovery!
(and now have a good mechanic you can go to when needed)
DB, water pump labor should be about 3 hours. Really great to hear you got it figured out and will be back on the road soon. Good looking 996 by the way.
+996.
I fully expect DIY from Honda forums where most owners are teens with more time than money. Also the younger guys generally don't mind getting dirty and bruising a few knuckles. Although I've been working on cars for over 20 years, I'm really losing my drive and inclination to work on these things sometimes.
Had I not known how to work on cars, I'd probably be right there with the op, especially since I have more money(not really) than time now and you'll know it's done right and not second guessing your FIRST attempt at doing something. Some are willing to take the risk and some are not. I can certainly appreciate DIY but also know its not everyone's cup of tea and can also respect the other side of it.
This isn't Renntech so DIY shouldn't be pushed onto others IMHO.
I couldnt agree more but just because we cant afford Porsche Dealer rates doesnt mean were DIY losers. ,,,,and to think Ive been on the wrong forum this whole time. Now I know better. I am deleting the DIY's I posted right now. Thank you!
$1400 sounds about "dealer" right. WP & gasket is $360, drain and refill (partial) is about $160, and 5 hours labor at $150/hr R&R WP, pressure test, shop supplies, tax, etc. I'd like to hear the actual tally from the dealer, too. +1 on asking for the old WP back to see the failure mode.
+1 on what was said about it could easily have happened when you were in a bad location, weather, timing wise, etc, and failure could have been catastrophic. $1400 is nothing compared to "what might have been", which is why I find it curious when people make fun of me for doing preemptive maintenance when there is plenty of evidence to suggest avoidance is far preferred being cheaper and less destructive in the long run.
People have questioned "WHY?" when I (and others) have replaced apparently perfectly working 11 year old AOS, WP, T-stat, oil filler neck, etc. It's 11+ years old, that's why. I'd rather do it under my own terms, than on the cars terms.
While I agree some of KKs posts in this thread were unnecessarily abrasive, they were not any more than Hurdis or some others, on many more threads, for instance, & many of KKs threads HAVE been very useful, DIY wise, for a relatively new member. It's hard for a younger DIY to not realize that not everyone else can't or is not interested in a DIY when it's your DD, for instance. Also, I never saw him recommend chinese knock off motor mounts, but others have. He clearly showed he installed European made Reins which are an OE manufacturer for Porsche, and sold by Pelican.
Even doing my own work, and buying parts from Pelican, Sunset & Suncoast, I have spent $1000s DIYing over the last 5 years and the car has always run "well". It runs, looks and handles much better than "well" now, & I intend to keep it that way and better, both mechanically and cosmetically, for a long time.
Out of curiosity, I checked the price of a new Chevy Impala. Holy Crap!
12 year old Porsch or new Impala? I take 12 year old 911 any day.
Are people in this country crazy? Who would spend such money on a POS like that?
My company car is an Impala. The only redeeming quality is the cupholder. It works really well. The rest of the car is plastic junk. Even basic Hyundai's laugh at the Impala.
Yeah, the cup holders are pretty good on my rental Impala! But it drives like a ship. I can't wait to get my 996 back... Been drivin' this Impala POS since last Saturday. I almost forgot how boring an American Detroit car was. When I was getting the rental, I was talking to this pretty young thing named Chantall. She asked me, "What do you currently drive?" Man, I never felt so embarrased to say "A Porsche 911". That sounds like something a real jerk would say. Come on, who drives a "Porsche 911"? ...................................... I do this afternoon
my last rental was a chrysler 300
WOW talk about crap!
and handling - the car came loose at 30 mph on a cloverleaf freeway entrance? WTF? my suburban can take that ramp at 50! (surely the tires were mostly to blame - but hole crap, no wonder so many people just crash randomly - they need better cars)
should be a law, they have to drive a Porsche on a car control clinic style course and THEN drive the POS they are considering buying on the same course - they would "get it" - the POS is horrid in the event you actually need the car to perform in something like an emergency evasive maneuver - or changing lanes, stopping, turning, going - OH WAIT - it has a built in MP3 player, bluetooth and a navagator - oh crap, sign me up !
RE: cup holders
true story.
first time I was taking the kids out in the "new" Porsche (996) - my son runs up all excited, some sort of drink in hand, opens the door an prepares to get in... I shout "HEY!!"
he stops and looks at me
I say, put that drink in the cup holder
he looks....and looks.....and looks.... and says "there is no cup holder"
I reply, "That's right, because there are NO drinks coming with"
I wish my wife would get it. Everytime she gets in my car, she has a bucket of iced tea. Then complains about the way I drive my super car. She wants a limo type of ride. With cup holders and everything. She is quite happy with her Honda Accord. I am quite happy with my Porsche 996
LOL - my wife brings food - every time we go anywhere, even for a 2 mile drive to the store to buy ..... FOOD??
her car is a constant battle to keep clean and my truck sometimes gets a funny smell...to which I find a gift she left in the door pocket - she doesnt go in the Porsche much, so it's OK with me that she isn't "into" the car
I own a professional show car detailing company. Needless to say, I am a bit OCD with car cleanliness. My wife, knowing my affliction, still makes no effort to keep her Acura even remotely clean. She has actually found a store that sells bags of crumbs. There could be no other explanation than she is buying crumbs. I spend hours detailing every nook and cranny and within 12 hours, crumbs!!
She doesn't get to ride in the Pcar too often and only after being frisked.
Let's face it fellow OPO(obsessive-Porsche- owners), our wives(my wife) don't have the same cleanliness requirements that we have. I've explained the window down 'before' opening the door...she doesn't get it. She doesn't understand that my 911 is not a station wagon that should be filled with suitcases, or that it's ok to load my Porsche with food and salads when we go to a friends house. I could go on...
so my wife is on this "seed kick" where she is eating watermellon seeds ALL THE TIME (like sunflower seeds in size and shell)
so she is cracking them open and tossing the shells into some sort of container (2 she has, a paper coffee cup, nearly runeth over...and a barf bag with a plastic ring to keep it open)
so driving the other day...she has the barf bag in the lap and tosses a shell "into" it - naturally I see it miss, bounce off the rim and head somewhere down towards the floor - I say...is that how you do it, just toss them on the floor - she says....no I missed.... I say, oh...is that how you do it, miss and leave them on the floor
she smiles
I will clean her car out again this weekend - and that makes her happy, so - I guess it's worth it in the end -
My wife loves driving our 911. She gets it, and is good at it. She drove an Austin Healey in college and was driving an Eclipse turbo when we started dating. On a recent PCA 'Moonshine Run' through the NC mountains she was laughing in the fast corners and filming from the passenger seat. Her daily driver is a 330Ci E46 cabrio.
She sometimes leaves crumbs in the Porsche. I don't care.
Avatar wife is not the real wife. Yeah, I would be able to live with any and all of her bad habits. Real wife is an attorney that gets paid to argue. Needless to say, I just stipulate every morning that I am sorry for my good dreams and sorry for her bad dreams. Then I go out and clean her car.
You probably accepted the fact that you will lose most arguments already. The only saving grace for you is to win through emotion and not logic.
Got those WeatherTech type mats for the wife's car and it's helped reduce the cleaning time quite a bit.
Taking care of my elderly parents. Mom had blood/urine test scheduled for last Saturday. She was unable to, err, umm, perform Saturday and thus we left the clinic without her leaving a urine sample.
She managed to produce one over the week end. Monday bright and early I collected said sample. It was in a sealed cup and that was in a sealed plastic bag.
I can tell you my comfort level for carrying a urine sample in my Turbo required 3 more plastic resealable bags and these in two Wal-Mart plastic shopping bags.
Since that's not your wife I can ask.... Her R-hip looks funny just above the bikini. It looks like she has a thick layer of skin/fat that overlaps her hips. Am I nuts or just finally going blind from all the self abuse?.....
Not her thighs, up abpve at her waist line. She looks like a amardillo with the outer shell. SHe's obviously very pretty so it's probably just a optical illusion-hopefully....
You guys are lucky you have wives that tolerate your Porsche habits. I had to get divorced so that I could buy one. It's amazing what man can accomplish when he doesn't have someone telling him what he can't do all the time
Btw, just had my water pump done by RAC for $800. $1400 sounds a tad high. Try to negotiate.
Jr, she has it on both sides, but you have to look very closely at the left hip to see it, as it is not in as much light as the right. She is toned in her abdominal region, as such it is very scuplted along the ridge you are looking at...probably looks much better in person.
FWIW, my dealer quoted $950ish for a water pump, my indy quoted $8 or 900. I did it for about $300, and 5 hours of my time...unlike some previous posters, I will not begin admonishing you for not turning your own wrench, I totally get not wanting to do it. For me I looked at it as a challenge, and I had an afternoon that was going to be free, and a fridge full of beer
isn't this the leading cause of some of our hand assembled engines to go kaboom? When drunk techs stumble in on Mondays and try to assemble our engines to tight tolerances?
A life of school kids buying her beer to get her.... uh... drunk instead of jewelry.
Yep, Ivangene was banned. One mistake saying "sometimes I miss my water cooled" and wham the air cooled police banned him.
Since this has evolved into a wife discussion... my wife bought me my first Porsche (my seal-grey '03 Boxster) for my birthday 4 years ago, which is awesome. When I showed up about 2 months ago with my 996 instead of the Boxster - I traded it in without asking/telling her - she was only irritated for a couple of days.
When I was installing the long-tube headers on my Corvette, she volunteered to crawl under the car to start a couple of header bolts that I couldn't reach with my gorilla hands.
She might be the coolest wife ever.
Awesome wife you have! Mine is still a bit upset that I traded in my paid for Infiniti G35 for the 11 year old Porsche 996. Oh well....... Now it is nearly 13 years old and I am still loving it.
Back when I was in college, my wife(who was my girlfriend) drove my Bug-Eye sprite for the very first time. I evidently had too much to drink that evening. She seems to accept the fact that I'll always have something new coming home, whether it's a car, boat or dirt bike. Initially, it may be uncomfortable, but typically it's soon forgotten, and for that, I'm lucky.
10 years ago my wife once bought me driving gloves for our wedding anniversary.
Fireproof Simpsons :-) I still use them - tho their on their last laps I'm afraid.
Guess she started me down the slippery slope.....
She is also the one that was driving in Boxstoberfest a few years back the same weekend
I had a race. She was clocking 10Mph faster on public roads then I was on the track :-) or is that :-(
