I paint for a living and I use solvent "still" but the reps keep telling me there are better matches using water if the vehicle was painted with it from the factory!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As you may know I have just installed the aerokit on my car and I think the color they painted the new parts a bit more grey than the rest of the car. The slate grey looks to me a little yellowish/greenish, compared to the very grey color they painted. Some say the paint is just old, but I read that there are two color codes for Slate Grey: -> 23F for water based color -> 22D for conventional paint. Can anybody shed some light on the different type of paint there is for cars ? Phil

POST 2Original post

Most all Porsches are painted with waterborne paint I just don't know how far back, I thought all 996's were using water?? I paint for a living and I use solvent "still" but the reps keep telling me there are better matches using water if the vehicle was painted with it from the factory! BUT, it still comes down to the painter, if your good you can match "most" anything, but I still tell my customers all of our matches are what's known as a blendable match, there are few PERFECT matches in panel painting vs. blending I did my areo kit and it matched good, but mine is Ocean Blue, very dark color, easy (er) to pull off !

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

we have a pro painter on board cool. what do you think of my match based on that picture ? should i call it a day ? I can live with it, but if there was a mistake made and I can get a better match, I'll take it before I start adding a clear bra on it $$$

POST 4Original post

Aero kit looks like slightly different, larger?? "metal flake" closer to the surface.

POST 5Original post

It could just be the difference between the same paint laid down over plastic vs metal. Many times bumpers or plastic rocker covers don't match the body of a car. I'd ask whoever painted it what color code the used too.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

they said they painted it 23F. But my previous bumper which was plastic was a perfect match with the paint..
