Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If you're getting any kind of noise from the headliner, $10 in felt tape is all you need to fix it. The headliner has plastic brackets in both front and back that get clipped into the roof metal in the front and slid against plastic hooks in the back. There's only padding on the clips and some foam in the back. What ends up happening is that over time the hooks and clips get enough play and the ribs on the plastic brackets end up ratting on the metal. The paint on the roof was worn off on my 4s where the ribs were touching the roof. I ended up putting felt on the ribs and all is quiet now

POST 2Original post

Nice. I think must of us have rattling headliner issues to varying degrees, and those of us who don't will soon enough. The pics don't make sense to me though...can't hardly tell what has changed. Is the bottom picture a close up of a rear side clip? Also - what's the procedure for taking the headliner down? Thanks.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The closeup is of one of the ribs on the plastic bracket that anchors the headliner in the front and back. The rib is what ends up rattling against the roof metal; I just stuck felt tape to all of them. As far as taking it down, you have to remove the A B and C pillars and unclip the metal rods that run along the long edge of the headliner

POST 4Original post

Good info. Is there a DIY on how to remove, or can you go into a little more detail on what is needed to take off headliner. Also, you just put felt tape over the brackets, or around them? Thanks, DS

Here's how to take the pillar trim off: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ics-added.html I put felt tape on all the ribs and edges that were touching the metal. You can spot it on dark cars really easy - the plastic wears off the paint where it rubs against the metal.

POST 6Original post

Thanks Halik. Final question -- about how long did it take you to take off, tape, and put back on? Take care, DS

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Eh with the pillar trim coming off, maybe 2-3 hours?

POST 9Original post

My new (to me) '06 Cab S has that rattle and it seems like I can stop it (at least temporarily) by pressing up on the headliner in the rear and it clips back into place.
