POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I didn't really give it much thought before my 996 purchase (Friday). Our neighborhood had it's anual X-mas Light-Up event (see pic!) on Saturday. I opened my garage to get something out while many people were in front of my house & I heard a "smart" comment about what was in my garage My prior toy is an older Mustang which is significantly modified. I received only positive comments about that car, albiet infrequently and only from "people who knew." It was a more subtle, average man's car... Now my Porsche (that still sounds funny) only cost about as much as a new Honda Accord, and I waited in life until I could afford it. I've always wanted one, but should I feel guilty for having it?

POST 2Original post

nope - i got my MY03 911 with GT3 kit at 26. i worked for it, and even after a year of ownership, i STILL look back EVERYTIME i park it and walk away, and admire it. i dont give 2 ***** about what others think because in the end, I, ME, ONLY ME walk towards it and get in while they just mouth off out of jealousy. but most of the time, people are nice and say nice car, or something of the like. A couple of my bosses became real douches towards me, and i only think "you make 250+/year you can EASILY afford one" but whatever. haters gonna hate and players gonna play LOL

hehe funny, I have heard the same thing already....we have a mustang as well, but it is a 2011 GT premium convertible loaded, thing is they have no idea our mustang cost darn near double what we paid for our 996 cabriolet, but now they think we are.....well you get the message.... anyhow. No way would I ever feel guilty for buying anything, we worked for it, we made our choices to live the life we chose, some people choose huge home, or huge boats, huge vacations, some choose to save every penny they make for retirement not doing much of anything their entire life, some will never understand the thrill of the driving experience, the car is merely a mode of transportation (Clark Howard a national tv host how to save more, spend less is one of those - Gosh he must be boring <g>) We live a good balance, not living over our means in any of the areas allowing us to do a bit of everything we enjoy, a nice home, some nice cars, nice motorcycles, nice vacations, nothing extravagant on any level and we have a ton a fun, heck my wife drives about 100 miles a day it kills some people that we spend that much on fuel. We decided long ago, that is going to be a fun drive for her, a hybrid was not going to do that for her <g>

POST 4Original post

Had an idiot make a comment last week at the gas station. "If you work for the goverment and drive a Porsche, they are paying you too much". This was during work hours and I couldn't tell him what I really felt about him. What this moront doesn't know is that, his convertible Saab cost him a heck of a lot more than my car. I got my 996 as a non runner, slaved over it for 4 months to fix the engine, but at the end, all it cost me was $8500. My neighbours know this as they all saw me work on it all summer.

POST 5Original post

Most would equate a Porsche with $$$$$, so there is a misconception with them that all Porsche owners are wealthy. If they only knew how affordable used Porsches are...

POST 6Original post

I feel like a total *** owning/driving my Porsche. You can usually tell I am in *** mode by the permanent smile on my face as I run through the gears.

POST 7Original post

OH Yea...total *** mode but I had a switch installed so I can turn it off trouble is I forgot to ask my wrench where he installed the damn switch!!! Look I am NOT kidding when I say my own brother told me "I dont know what you are going through, but I hope you get through it quickly" - we used to talk almost everyday and now we rarely ever talk...he even opted out of Thanksgiving this year - first year in like 10 years - so YES - people equate owning a Porsche as being something...I guess ***, arrogant, snob, rich guy, mid-life - IDK I personally only have one regret - not buying one sooner and if I have anything to say about it, I will NEVER be without at least one 911 sorry if people dont "get it" one more funny story is the co-worker who said "my minivan gets me to work just as fast as your Porsh" my reply, "yea, I know....but when I arrive I have a huge smile on my face" in nearly 5 years of ownership I have came to one really solid understanding that I really dont give a rats azz what anyone else thinks about what I drive - esp when they justify their car as "practical" and it cost 2x what mine did (like some pick up or Prius POS!) rant off, lets go drive

POST 8Original post

I don't feel like an a-- at all. What I do think of at times is "what have I done to deserve this". Like tks12, good wife and family, balance in our lives, play nice with the other kids, some good toys (not many), and now a great car! How can that make anybody feel like an a--?

POST 9Original post

I used to feel that when I owned a G-Wagen, like somehow I should feel guilty driving a 4-by with a big chrome MB star on the grille. That car is long gone, and what I've learned since is that I'll never take on that burden again. Life is too short. When I get a 996, I'm simply going to take satisfaction in knowing that I most likely got a lot more car for my money than anyone who might prejudge me.

POST 10Original post

I think it's a matter of taste....yes a new loaded Porsche is well above $100k, what we 996ers are driving is much less but nearly as fun to drive. We're not posers, we're Sports car enthusiast and the one we prefer is a 911. Go ahead.....mash that right pedal and smile, most guys and gals would like to do the same.

POST 11Original post

I think I'm in the minority that I bought it new, but I did what I did and enjoy it every time I drive it. I don't care what others have to say, because they are saying it in my rear view. I got lucky and was in the right place at the right time that allowed me to spend ridiculous money on a couple of cars in my mid 20s. Now approaching 40 some want me to think about the better things I could have done with the money, but I have no regrets because I can look back and know I've enjoyed every penny of it and I know without a second thought that I would do it all again (in fact I was shocked to realize that life has changed and I can afford my new Cayenne without the free money). If you're happy and have no regrets, then someone else's negative opinion is meaningless. I do love the "damaging the environment" argument from new hybrid owners though. I enjoy educating them on how a 12 year old car is far better for the environment than having a new one built. It's usually about then that they realize I know they bought their car for show and they walk off in a huff

POST 12Original post

I am a new 996 C4 owner. I bought the car after looking for a fun 4wd upgrade from my Honda and something more reliable than my Audi S2. I looked at all kinds of cars - more Japanese cars, SUV's, American coupes, newer German sedans, etc. and in the end I did not see how I could pass on a 2000 C4 with 40k for about $26k. I traded the other two cars on it (got all the money in the world for them). So I got down from three cars to two (more on the second car in a minute) my insurance dropped $1k a year, and I feel like I spent as little money as possible to get the best car for my needs. Even though I started off as a Porsche lover as a teenager, I'm now in my mid 30's, this is my first Porsche. Fast forward to a week after. My garage door is open and my neighbor, who is usually cool comes over, he looks at my other car in the garage, which is a Ferrari F40, looks at the 996 and says, "A Porsche?? Why in the world do you need a Porsche? You have a freaking Ferrari F40!" I'll say here that I live in a very nice neighborhood but relatively modest; the car everyone has is a Toyota Highlander and outside of my garage, the nicest car on the block is a Lexus SUV. So I'm the only Car Guy on my block although there is another Car Guy one block over with a Bentley. Anyways, so I tell my neighbor that yes I bought a Porsche but it wasn't nearly as expensive as either of his two SUV's, gets decent mileage, has great back seats for my sons, and is pretty reliable. Plus, I'm a single guy so it's not like I have to take my wife's opinion into consideration. He bristles a little bit and says something like, when I got the F40 and would be working on it in the garage and he would pass by, that was so cool but having a Porsche is a little bit douchy. We talked about it and couldn't figure out why that is. He sat in it and looked at it and finally, he asked if I could find him one like it because if it's possible to get that much car for that kind of money, he wants one. Go figure. By the way, I am very surprised at how much I love this 996. It's only been a few weeks but it is a great car. I made a post on Ferrarichat about it as there are so many people who dismiss the 996 as something crappy but they're so wrong. Time will tell but I really don't think that there is a better DD out there for me. As for the OP, I'll give you one thing I've learned in the last 8 years or so of owning cool cars. If you're a real car person, and having a car like this is something you've always wanted, that's all that matters. You know that you didn't buy to impress others, for any kind of social status, to meet girls, blah blah blah, that anyone else would like to conject. As long as you're not living over your means to get it, there's no reason to for you to feel bad about it. No one else has to walk in your shoes.

POST 13Original post

I have been daily driving my C4S for about a year now. Most of the time I completely forget that the car brings so much attention. I feel so at home driving it. I'm sure other people think I'm some douche driving around just lapping up the attention and really all I'm doing is thinking about the next time I can get to the track or improving my heel toe at the next exit.

POST 14Original post

good story! I like how it's hard to put your finger on what the stigma is - yet it exists.... an F40 is OK but a $25k Porsche is "a bit much" LMAO!!

A know a guy that always has a new Ferrari & new top of the line Mercedes. He always quizes me about my Porsche. He says " Ferrari's are for collecters, Porsches are for drivers"

POST 20Original post

Yes I do feel like an *** at times for having a couple of Porsche's in the garage. Most all my neighbors have Mercedes'.

POST 21Original post

My wife got some comments like "Wow u guys must be loaded", or "Your husband is going through his mid life crisis" . Well the 911 was always my dream car, and I would always talk about getting one one day to everyone, family, friends etc. So yes, I did get the car when I turned 40 (maybe coincidence but was my goal to have one by then). My wife always told me to go ahead and get one for the last ten years but practicality (2 kids) and $$ concern kept getting in the way. I finally took the plunge, cant be happier and don't realy care about other peoples opinions. My other cars are a 2003 Infiniti G35 and a 2004 Acura MDX, so I am not extravagant. I dress nice, but always shop for bargains. I make sacrtifices for the small things so we can enjoy some other things in life. Life is about what you make it and if you work your *** off you deserve to reap the benefits o your hard work!!

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 10046362

The only thing he's collecting with new Ferraris is a crap ton of depreciation. They make way too many of them, they're not hard to get, and they are so overpriced that depreciation curve would rival any hockey stick in the NHL. Like all cars, Ferraris are meant to be driven - ALL OF THEM. Even if you have an older special Ferrari, you have to drive it regularly, and I don't mean to Starbucks. I've owned 5 Ferraris over the years, none of them to flip - they just weren't quite the right cars for me, although all were great cars - and I have never lost money on one and drove all of them a lot. They really are great cars to drive.

POST 25Original post

Owning a Porsche doesn't make you an ***. Thinking someone is an *** based on the kind of car they drive makes that person an ***. Years ago I bumped into a guy who brought his new 360 Modena to a party at a common friend's home to show it off. It took him 10 minutes to figure out how to get the car into reverse and he needed the assistance of two friends to guide him out of the [straight] driveway so that he wouldn't hit anything when he was leaving. Now, that's an ***. I say screw the asses and enjoy your car. Okay, that came out wrong but you know what I mean. -Eric

POST 26Original post

Never. However Porsches are a dime a dozen around here so they are nothing special. Lots of Ferrari's, Astons, Lambos and the like. It damn near takes a Bugatti Veyron to turn a head! Now that guy might be an ***!

LOL!!! Reminds me of the time my wife and I miscommunicated on who was going to pick up our kid from highschool. I show up a few minutes early in the C4S, the kids know me from the swim team, so they congregate around the car. The wife shows up shortly with the Boxster S, top down natch, and the kids all shout "Not fair!".

POST 32Original post

I moved from the UK to the US a few years ago, in the UK 40 yrs old + with a Porsche screams ‘Midlife crisis’ especially a red or yellow car….or a cab to be honest. Doesn’t feel as bad here in MN with a silver coupe, I did think about a yellow C2 when I was looking and my wife who never comments on my car purchases flatly refused! due to the perceived image. I don’t know how many people I have told at work that my ‘Flash’ Porsche costs less than their new bland brand saloon parked in the lot Like the OP said sometime you feel aware that you drive a Porsche, most think you’re a show off, maybe 5% appreciate it as a great drivers car.

There's food at Hooters? Speaking of food, pulling into the McD's drive through when it was new always garnered some interesting expressions and comments (was 25 at the time)

POST 35Original post

Dunno where you guys live but around here both Hooters and Tilted Kilt have some of the nastiest girls around. Dunno how these girls get hired but I'm guessing all the good looking ones take regular jobs elsewhere.

POST 39Original post

I think thanks to the design of our 996's : 1) People think our cars are new, $100k 991's 2) People don't realize a new Honda will cost MORE to buy now 3) People don't know how old our cars are This causes those who don't know to ASSUME we paid a fortune for our new Porsches, and that we are a$$es.

POST 40Original post

POST 41Original post

Looks like I need to head to the west coast. Don't care if more girls go under the knife out that way, at least they're pleasant on the eyes. If I go into an establishment like that, there should be at least some "good" looking girls. I for sure wouldn't be going there for 100% of the food.

POST 42Original post

Quotes source post: 10047187

I can only wish this was the case but I would have to disagree. However since all things are cyclic, if we hold onto our cars for 10-20 years, I'm sure Porsche's latest iteration at that time would probably mirror our headlights by then.

POST 43Original post

I am currently stuck on post #37 unless someone can top that - this thread is DONE

POST 44Original post

OK, maybe not brand new 991's, but recent 997's for sure - headlight shape be damned!

POST 45Original post

Quotes source posts: 10047201, 10047187

For someone that knows Porsches/cars, sure. From people that don't know, I've had it mistaken as being brand new and from the 80s.

POST 46Original post

Quotes source post: 10047227

Yes you are also correct. For the avg consumer that is not a gear head in any way will always think any modern 911's are all the same. As enthusiasts, we often times forget this aspect.

POST 47Original post

Quotes source post: 10047247

Exactly! Most enthusiasts will know the age of our cars by the headlight shape, rims, etc. Anyone else will have no clue, and since most of us keep our cars looking like new - most assume they ARE new.

My boss said he thought my C4S was new because he kind of remembered that the older ones had those strange looking headlights, whereas the headlights on [mine] are round. My guess is that people grew more accustomed to (or accepting of) the look than some Porsche critics give credit. Also, while its design has been maligned by some, the 996 hung around longer than both the 964 and 993 and it outsold them as well. If you consider that the most notable difference between the 996 and 997 was the shape of its headlight housing, the overall design was around for around 13 years. -Eric

I know I'm a heretic, but I just never liked the 80s-90s 911s and that was mostly due to the headlights. So while I appreciate that the 996 was a departure from the classic look that had endured since the original, I still like it better. Now that I appreciate Porsches on more than the aesthetic views of my youth, the bug eyes wouldn't stop me from owning an older one or a 997 (not a fan of some of the tech in the 991. Good god, I'm a Porsche snob!!!)

POST 50Original post

I must say I empathize with the OP. Before I made my decision to buy an 00 C2 last spring, not wanting to appear as a show-off lilkely delayed my decision to buy by a few months. Now that it is bought and the first few ackward comments and feelings are a few months behind me, I'm much more comfortable owning it ... but the real benefits are to my 15-yr-old. The bond that this purchase has created between the 2 of us ... is, well priceless, ... especially on weekend drives and ... at the soccer pitch. He finally understands what a <handling> car is all about. I wish I had had that opportunity at his age but grateful for him. Enjoy your daily and weekend drives!

POST 51Original post

I realized, after reading the 4 pages of the "*** in a porsche" thread, that many people think porsches are really expensive, and we all know that a new fully loaded honda accord can cost more. BUT. lets keep it that way. dont tell people that it cost less than their BMW, or their honda accord. if we let the secret out, more and more people will buy the car and will diminish its worth. I got the porsche cause i love sports cars (and cause i could afford it). I used to have an S2000 before so I wanted a 2 door sport car with power. with minimal research I saw that an older 996 was very affordable. What I didnt know were the benefits it came with - valet leaves the car in front of the restaraunt (MY03 with GT3 kit), chick leaves her panties outside before getting in LOL, etc. So what if a few people think we're pretentious etc cause we drive an "expensive" car. Dont justifiy it to them saying its not expensive. I want to keep that image. SeanR said it best when some newb was talking about putting lambo doors on a 911. sadly the price has dropped but its still a secret - lets keep it that way.

POST 52Original post

Quotes source post: 10047602

I don't think you need to worry as only the initial cost of entry is somewhat affordable, relatively speaking. Cost of maintenance is another thing and something not too many people that are used to buying Honda's can stomach. As much as I dislike this part of it(maintenance cost/parts), I do feel it separates out the men from the boys and really keeps true enthusiasts in this game and weeds others out. If I ever make a comment about the 996 being "affordable", I make sure to point out the maintenance aspect as well so that you are portraying a more complete picture.

POST 53Original post

Quotes source post: 10047670

All true but it is way cheaper than my old Audi. I would never say it's cheap to own but it's very reasonable for what you get in return.

POST 54Original post

Quotes source post: 10047687

I guess depends on what you want to do. If you want to use all OEM parts for maintenance and ALSO want to do upgrades, that can open up a whole another set of worms. But yeah Audi's can also be nightmares. Thankfully I stopped back in '89 when I was glad to sell my '85 4000s model that had costed me more in repairs than my initial purchase price by the time I sold it.

POST 55Original post

Funny thing about maintenance costs on these, other than consumables, a few window regulators (those really should be listed as consumables...), a clutch (was about half done, but since it was out for an RMS anyway...), and a few fuel tank float resets, ours has had no major issues and has been cheap to maintain. Under warranty we only had 2 RMS replacements and the front end noise I mentioned in another thread. Its reliability and relative low cost in up keep was a major factor in buying a Cayenne. That said, 10 quarts of Mobile 1 and a fresh set of PS2s are nothing to sneeze at. Had a coupon for a "free" oil change from my shop that I used last week. The dollar value of $40 barely made a dent in the bill :-( I think some of those that talk about 996s being cheap also fail to realize that 20-25k for a 13 year old vehicle is still expensive. Especially if you are talking to a Honda/Toyota driver.

POST 56Original post

My car may be 13 years old, but it was born a "supercar" and it will always be a stunning vehicle. The GT3 body kit is like icing on a damned fine cake. I have yet to find anyone who doesn't think the car is amazing once they get over whatever snide comment they had to share. The 996 is a marvel of engineering, and represents one of the biggest, if not the single largest, technological leaps forward for Porsche. I have had a couple of people make the "must be nice" comments, to which I reply "Yes, it is nice - and it was a long time coming." If it's a young person, I point out that they too may be in a position to acquire such a vehicle once they've been working for 25 or 30 years. Finally... worrying about what other people think - especially when it comes to what car you drive - is a waste of time. If you wonder if you are an *** because you drive an amazing car, you just might be one.

POST 57Original post

My car broke down recently and while I waited for the tow truck I heard a LOT of comments. Most I could not hear, but over and over it was "Carrera this" and "Carrera that" and "996 something else". One guy checked it out for like 5 minutes or more. Then there was the "You don't deserve a Porsche!!" comment. I felt many were laughing at me. Like "look at the stuck up rich snob in his stupid Porsche". I definitly did not feel very loved. Ultimately being broken down sucks, but while moving, who cares what anybody thinks? I keep a low profile otherwise, so it's all good!

POST 58Original post

I like that actually! With other cars, they get old and kids buy them. So you driving next to a high school kid driving same car as you IF you like me and keep your cars long. I don't see much kids driving Porsche cars. The Boxster sometimes maybe, but when I see a 911 I usually see a prefesional type behind the wheel or a die hard enthusiast.

For all of our amusement, I just returned from a business trip to Singapore. The cost of these critters over there is other-wordly. see http://www.sgcarmart.com/new_cars/ne...hp?MOD=Porsche The cost excludes the $100,000 license, the $20,000 insurance and the tax on engine displacement over 1.6 liters. WE HAVE IT CHEAP here! Enjoy them.

POST 62Original post

Not me. I dont feel like an *** but I bet they do as I leave them for dead at the traffic lights or as I overtake them on the broken centre lines of a two lane carraige way. I even sport in the largest of letters along the *** end of my car the words P O R S C H E 911 Carrera. Just to let them know what it was that made them feel like an ***.

POST 63Original post

No and Yes - never feel that way based on the expressed opinion or judgement of others. But at times I do stuff that makes me feel like an ***. Just did it again tonight - wife's car needs some tires - total installed cost for four with a four wheel alignment is like $550.00. Tonight when leaving the kid's basketball practice she sees me "feeling" her tires. She says " what the hell are you doing now" - I say, "just checking to make sure you really need four, the two on this side seem okay" - Even though it's dark I can see, and feel, her glare as she says "just get me four and be done with it (then mumbles some stuff I won't repeat)". That is when I felt like an *** as I considered how much I pay for tires, and of course I have a set of summer and a set of winters for both of them- plus she knows I just dropped $2,500.00 on the C2. I quickly said, "Yes, you are getting four tires AND an alignment". But still feel like *** at the moment about even considering cheaping out when it comes to her car. Also - I don't think I ever feel that other people are asses because of what they drive. I get along with the neighbor who has his toy, a nice red Corvette convertible tucked away in his garage, as I do with the neighbor who drives an older Ford Windstar. For some reason I don't feel the need to make other people feel like an ***. Need to go buy some tires tomorrow and make this right. Easy fix, a whole lot cheaper than Diamonds - "Tires, that'll shut her up".

Yah a little after punching it past a bunch of baffunes playing google how to settle on how to line up correctly to obstruct all the traffic and how slow it too slow for the fast lane while cars pass them to the right. Germany it is illegal to pass to the right of anyone no matter what lane they are in. We are lucky in that aspect. Germans require many years of drivers training before receiving a license. These clowns in america take a 30 question test for a license to kill.

POST 68Original post

Hi, I am from Singapore, its just crazy how the prices of cars are over here. Its not good for car enthusiasts. It has also become a DREAM for many young people here to own a car as the cheapest new car will cost around USD65000. My 1998 996 C2 cost me USD99000 2 years ago when I bought it. Have to pay a yearly road tax of USD3900. Insurance of USD3500 yearly. Our cars needs a COE (certificate of ownership) which is only valid for 10years, after which we will need to pay (current rates USD73000 for a 3.4L car)) to the local authorities just to renew the COE to own "our" car for another 10years. I have another 5 years of validity on my COE, after which I am not sure if I will even renew the ownership with the high cost involved. Sorry, deviated from the topic a little. Just had to rant the steam out about our transport systems here since I saw the post on my country. Cheers

POST 96Original post

Ever run into an *** in a Porsche while driving your Porsche? I work for a large corporation and the campus my office is in houses multiple lines of business. There are 4 911's in the garage that I have spotted. One day as I was backing into a space a red 997 pulled in a couple of spaces over. I got out expecting the usual "brotherly Porsche owner chit chat" but the owner got out, looked at me and *rolled his eyes* then walked off toward the elevators. Now...I work in IT and we aren't customer facing and my dress code is "casual" so I was wearing jeans, a golf shirt and a hoodie. This guy was in a suit. I followed him but didn't say anything as he immediately made a phone call to his admin announcing he was on his way up). Anyhow, at the time I thought it was sort of a jerk move but left it alone. After seeing this thread I thought "yeah, there are *** 911 owners out there"....have you seen any? :-)

POST 97Original post

Also, ever run into an *** in a Porsche while driving your "other" car? I commute into LA everyday for work, so for 5 days a week I do not drive my 996 (way too much traffic and clutching to enjoy the ride). Instead I have a commuter car. I hate to say it, but I have run into the occasional Porsche *** in this scenario. Example 1) Double left turn lane. Porsche 991 on inside lane, me on the outside lane. Light turns green and the 991 goes from inside to outside, forcing me to brake to avoid a collision. Here’s the kicker, after I change lanes and pull up on the driver’s side, the lady inside rolls down her window and flips ME off! Example 2) Waiting at the valet after lunch. Out of the restaurant comes “Mr. Rude” who cuts in front of me and says he must have his car immediately. When his new 997 Turbo S (with 21 inch wheels) pulls out of the garage he proceeds to jump in, without tipping the valet, and go full throttle out into traffic. No way that engine was warm yet. I would guess that LA must be one of Porsches largest markets and, although there are a million solid Porschephiles in LA, there are those few bad apples, clueless owners who bought the car for the badge as opposed to the performance, history and/or enjoyment of it. These are the 1% that create the stereotypes that lead to these types of threads in the first place. That said, I never feel like an *** in my 996. Worked hard for it, do not take it for granted and I enjoy it every chance I get. Also, the camaraderie I find at PCA and POC events has been second to none.

POST 98Original post

Actually funny that you guys have ran into @ss Porsche owners, as all the ones I've ran into all drove 997 or newer models now that I think of it. I can actually say that I've never run into a @ss 996 owner yet. Some were dumb or goofy but never an @ss 996 owner yet.

POST 99Original post

Quotes source post: 10052144

I think the "***" owners (as pointed out in the post prior to yours) are just buying them to remind you that they are more important. As such they typically drive the newer cars. At least in my area I can assure you that there were a good share of ***** 996 drivers when the cars were still new. I see the same thing with BMWs. Most of the asses are in newish cars and the cool people that will wave as they pass are in the older ones.

POST 100Original post

I agree. I was talking about the present. And yes I do also have 2002tii and e30 m3 so I know what you mean by newer BMW owners. The newer BMW owners that do wave at me tells me that they are definitely enthusiasts. I gave him the thumbs up and he probably knew immediately that I was a BMW enthusiast.

Never; I feel as if I have the inside dope on a GREAT motorcar that makes me grin every time I drive it. Its not a daily driver, as none are, but the best thing about owning a Porsche is the fact it is one of the most ecologically sound investment, the most Sporting car, and the most financially sound investment a guy can make , IF if it is maintained. And , one of the safest. Most of my cars are vintage watercooled, but I do own 2 vintage air cooled, the newest an ' 88 Carrera. How could I feel bad driving any of them ? Only the evil , jealous types are going to be haters. Not worth my time if THEY try to make me feel as an *** for driving the best.

POST 104Original post

A porsche is not so out of place here as it might be in other parts of Canada or the US. I went to Pittsburgh a month and a half ago and saw only one panamera in the four days that I was there, no 911's. I've only once heard a snide remark on a PCA drive where we had ten shiny porsches all parked in a line. It was a beautiful sight but too much for some passersby. F*'em! We are all enthusiasts and have worked hard for our cars. If I cared what other people thought about me, I wouldn't have been an entrepreneur either. So I don't give a rats *** about what someone else might think about me.

You probably won't get that much money out of selling your car to Singapore, because a HUGE portion of the prices goes to the car import taxes. 120% of car price and a 7% GST and of course the dreaded USD75000 COE. All these presumably to control car population, but hasn't been working well as the number is creeping upwards and they authorities start making it even more expensive. (How do they expect numbers to fall with increase in citizen population, people eventually just get used to the prices and start buying cars) Instead, car ownership has become status symbol and an avenue for many to flaunt their wealth. It punishes those who genuinely needs a car for whatever reason. Like you mentioned, not much space to open up. But we mostly do it on the Malaysian Highways enroute to Sepang International Circuit where you have our track days. However, not to say that we cannot enjoy the car in Singapore. No insane top speeds, but enjoy the thrills of hard accelerations traffic lights to lights (we have many here), sad but we just have to adapt.

LOL. Hey, I'm new to the vocabulary as well (learned it from an old Will Smith song, Get Jiggy with It), but as I understand it, if *you're* approaching a car, then the car being approached isn't flexing. He's just going his speed. Not until he punches it does he enter the zone of Flexing.
