Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Went into the garage to grab something, and noticed a small amber light that was on in the 996 behind the rear view. I looked in the car real quick, and noticed there is a casing around it to direct the light forward only towards the rear view/ windshield. I'm assuming this has something to do with the auto dimming function, but am
Curious why it would be on while the car is parked over night. Searched for an answer to no avail...
It sounds like you're describing the amber LED ambient lighting found on 2001 and later 996s. It's designed to provide subtle lighting to the center console area at night. There's another one on the back of the door pull on the driver's side door that shines on the ignition switch area.
I believe these LEDs should be "off" unless the car is running.
Speaking of those lights, neither of them work in my car I noticed a couple weeks ago. Anything I should check before I start replacing things?
Does the little "pin" button control the one on the door as well?
No, the pin only controls the downward facing light from the mirror. It's a very subtle light -- pressing the little pin makes the mirror downward light go from "dim" to "less dim". It's very subtle. Does a nice job of somewhat lighting up and bouncing off of the alumilook shifter. That's about it -- totally non-obtrusive (and non-functional, really).
I wouldn't worry about it one way or the other.
Yeah I kind of figured it was either for the rear view or just ambient lighting... Just thought it was odd it stays on when the car sits overnight. Although I doubt it'd pull much from the battery even over time.
It's the tiny warning light that lets you know that you forgot to lock the car, even sitting in the your own garage, so you're slowly running down the battery (because some of the systems remain active if the car is unlocked).
I think the point of the ambient lighting is to help you locate the ignition, door latches and shifter when the interior lights are off.
The ambient lighting definitely doesn't stay on forever. I last opened the door to my car yesterday and left it unlocked since. When I went to the garage just now, the ambient lighting was off. When I opened the door and then closed it, the ambient lighting was on. So, it must time off after some period of time -- my guess is half an hour.
Newbie here, replaced 97 Boxster with 03 cabrio last weekend. Lots of great information here! Actually nice enough in Michigan to have roof down yesterday. Noticed amber lights you are talking about were on when I had it parked in the garage. Left it sit for a while to see if they would go out. Then locked it but they still were on. One by key, both doors, mirror, and memory seat control. Would not go out until I put the roof up. Do they always stay on while the roof is down? Would be strange if you left it parked at night.
