I did hear if you drive your 996 to Poland they are required by consumer law to replace the IMSB while you wait.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A poster on 6speed claims that Porsche Japan is offering a free IMS check/replacement. Has anybody else heard about this?
Maybe Japanese have a better understanding of customer service. This past year Toyota replaced the entire frame of my 2001 Tundra which really wasn't that bad. They issued a recall and did this for many owners of 2000-2003 Tundra owners.
Well maybe this is the first proper domino to fall!! Time to call Porsche NA/Canada and ask if they are planning to follow suit!!
While they are checking - if Porsche NA decides to follow suit - even if my bearing was good I'd get the dealer to install an LN upgrade!!
My fianc's Toyota isn't covered under warranty here in Hawaii because the dealership is apparently under Toyota of Japan not US. So, maybe I'd be lucky and the dealership here is technically under Porsche of Japan? I'll call and find out, but it's definitely a long shot.
Does it matter what Japan does? Are we all going to ship our cars to Japan for the inspection / retrofit? Oh well at least its another IMSB thread. Yahoo!
Fanny, your dreaming because that "free" offer would bankrupt the company. Its not a "safety" issue so you can forget about it. I guess we could claim the IMSB failing could potentially start a fire due to the leaking oil.
Bankrupt the company --
- are you insane man??? Do you have any idea how much Porsche made last year?? I'm not saying will happen but if the Japanese letters turns out to be true, it would put the rest of the affected countries in a stronger position to advocate for this - I would think.
Dont tell me you actually believe they are going to repair (for free) 997's and 996's all the way back to 1999???? Hah, OK. (and you questioned my sanity?)
Steve, I recall not too long ago Jake Raby advising that the Bearings were made in multiple countries, including Poland, Japan, and Germany, to name a few.
The post says they will inspect the bearing and replace if the bearing is bad. So even if its true you would only get a new one if yours is bad which is not usually the case. Plus I am not sure how they could do this without taking the bearing apart.
I just want to see the letter... Actual proof would be fascinating. Who knows, maybe Japanese product liability law is viscious and Porsche had no choice. Or the whole thing is BS...
Either way it is interesting.
My old bearing is sitting on my desk at work. It's a great conversation piece. I tell everyone it's a $15k part. It's made in Poland and looks like new after 58k miles.
Since the recent IMS, RMS, clutch, waterpump, is done, are you ready to change all the other fluids? Steve you gotta start working on your own car now and you will really appreciate it.
Dont forget to start adding on your show room so you can keep it in your house. I start mine in the spring. Once I get the car inside the house, I can look at while I cook, watch TV, etc. Its gonna be awesome.
Perhaps the "knock-offs" are from China....they're good at reverse engineering and then selling those products that look identical to the real/original ones.
