Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I mean there seems to be plenty used engines in the $5k bracket.
Leading evidence: 'Use engines in the $5k bracket' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). If your not full of BS, a low mileage clean 996 would be a steal for that.

Suggestion
If you're stretching to afford the car to begin with, you'll certainly be more nervous about some potential high ticket repair bill.

Another recent post said Porsche Japan is repairing IMS failures at no charge.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just missed out on a friends car.....
He had an 03 996 with 34k.
He was coming down the bridge to te mainland and BAM.....engine was skins an awful racket. He found oil 10 feet back from th car on the road....
Dealer quoted him 23k for new engine.
He sold it for 4k yesterday.........
Wish I had known a day sooner....I'dalready have the motor out and apart with parts on the way
did you come on here with an air cooled 87 job just to gloat? Your friend my ****. PROOOOOOOF we need. He stopped within 10 foot? ***** mate. Show us a photo of this so called friends car. He sure as hell didn't drive it far if the engine blew up on him.
Yahoo!!!! Another IMS thread!!!!
Yeah bro, post some pics!!!! Heck I would buy it right now! If your not full of BS, a low mileage clean 996 would be a steal for that. I can buy salvage 3.6's all day for peanuts. Even if the salvage 3.6 donor needed a rebuild, it would be worth it. I call BS.
$4k.. he really sold it for nothing !
I think the car without engine should worth $10k. I mean there seems to be plenty used engines in the $5k bracket. labor is a killer if you do it at the dealer but many DIYer around these days.
Instead of giving free engines, Porsche should simply price those engine to a "reasonable" price: $10k as they used to be. That would solve the whole issue right there and keep the car value where it should be.
Considering the failure Porsche should even have the engine for $5k, but even at $10k I think that would make the issue much more 'swallowable'
I was referring to the low mileage wrecked/flooded 996 salvage cars. Their actually much cheaper than $5K. Maybe not in Canada but there are many down here.
This was the parent of my sons classmate that we are casual friends with.
I was at basketball practice last night and asking his wife if he was still interested in a tail of the dragon trip this spring.... she told me that they did not have the porsche any more.
She told me what happed. He did not know about ims or rms issues....they are not Porsche enthusiast....they just had one. The husband ed not even know that the car was a 996......
Those that got hostile..... wtf?.
Read not bashing the 996...I was bummed that I missed out on the car.....I would have bought it in a heartbeat.....
Sounds like there are guys here that are guys little sensitive to the well known ims issue.
Kind of doubt a poster with a join date of 12/10 and over 800 posts is a troll. Just relating a 996 story from the non-forum world. I am sure there are poor owners getting taken advantage of everywhere. The fact that he sold it for $4k means he really didn't try to recoup or consider repair. If money's not a big issue, then it happens. Doesn't even mean it was an IMS issue. How would his wife know an IMS from PMS. Impacted oil pan or busted oil filter canister would be the same results. Kumbaya my friends.....
damn air cooled trolls
$4k for a car with a blown motor is about right - have seen a couple sell in that price range, one was a full aero package - it kind of made me think,....hmmmmmm
on the other note - I was at a concert the last 2 nights in a row and NO ONE came in having just sold their 996 cheap with oil tracks free of charge
and I saw 2 acquaintances with 996's
We know your not a troll. First, he's a paying member and second, 928s have their own problems.
You were just exposed to some of our new resident ****** (Hurd & Krazy K).
Think nothing of it. Sorry to hear about your friends car. It's a sensitive topic round these parts.....
My dad just picked up an 02 C2 with 15k miles with an ims failure for $8,500. Is that within going rate and is porsche REALLY helping the owners at all? We plan to do the repair/swap ourselves. Also the car was shut off within 15-20 seconds of failure. Where am I really at? Opinions?
Hey Sovery, neither I nor Hurdi called the OP a troll as you just accused. It was Franki, a non-paying 12 post member. Maybe read more closely before you post.
really depends on what collateral damage there is and how good of a rebuild you do
keep your receipts and when it's all over (so to speak) post your findings
my guess is at $8500 you will be lucky if a complete motor needs rebuilding to come out ahead - BUT you get a car with a new motor so it has a lot of miles you can drive it to recoup your investment - plus it might be a fun experience - ONCE
It seems there a few on here who's first incilnation is hostility. Unfortunately it defeats the purpose of an open forum. It would be easier to get a greater scope of information/experience if people weren't afraid to post a question or idea due to the possible hostile backlash. Just my .02
MG, dude if your serious and not just adding to the IMSB drama, start a new thread with pics and legit info. That sounds like it could be a great deal (if true). Get off this train wreck of a thread while you can.
I think it coincides with not really having the ability to absorb the cost/loss of value financially. If you're stretching to afford the car to begin with, you'll certainly be more nervous about some potential high ticket repair bill.
Ivan, I guess I need to use the emoticons.
Sworn affidavit!
(joke)
Please post new thread with pics!
(serious but happy)
To Ivan:
(because theres not one that says #$@!$%)
First yes it's true I'll send pics to any email provided
Second... How the heck do I send picks if I'm not a paying member?
Third I have the oil filter cut appart from the previous owner (the car has sat for two years) and there are no chunks or large pieces in it. Only tiny particles, and not many at that.
I hope this is not the same engine that was sold to a member here but he never ended up seeingnthe engine he paid for. Be carefull people, if it's too good to be true...
It just sounded like a troll post, english wasn't written properly, couldn't quite understand a couple sentences that's all. I'm new to the forum and a new owner, with pics to come. Still trying to figure out how to post pics on the iPhone app. Also how to add a pic to my icon.
