Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

51 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My C4S is exhibiting the following behavior and I'm worried something might be awry with it. Has anyone else had any similar problems? - When I start my car in the morning, it starts right up and doesn't make any weird noises - If I push the gas pedal all the way down, it goes really fast - All the electronics work (except the little amber LED on the door handle...) - If I drive it in the rain or leave it outside overnight it doesn't melt - If I do maintenance or repairs on it myself, it still runs - When I removed the original IMS bearing at 100k miles, it was in perfect condition - Nobody seems to give a **** that the headlights aren't round - It doesn't burn or leak any oil - It's 10 years old and has over 100k miles on it, but everyone I know who isn't into cars thinks it's only a year or two old Any ideas what the issue could be? * K, fine... I had a couple issues pop up over the last couple months: The original water pump finally went at 96k miles, and at 100k miles the throwout bearing decided to go bad, so I had to do a new clutch sooner than I'd hoped for.

POST 2Original post

Sounds like you need to get it on the track and find out what she's capable of.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10072536

That's the plan! Other priorities/obligations prevented that from happening this year, but I'm hoping to change that once track season is back.

POST 4Original post

I suggest you replace all wear items now while your good luck still holds.

POST 5Original post

I think you have a serious problem on your hands. Might have to drive it another 100k miles until you find out what's wrong...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10072551

All of the usual suspects have been replaced as needed or if deemed worth replacing preemptively while doing other things. Off the top of my head - Coolant tank - Starter - RMS - IMSB (LNE) - Cam chain guides - Serp belts - Waterpump - Thermostat (low temp) - Oil/filter changes every 7k miles (Rotella) - Clutch/flywheel

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The problem with model-specific car forums is they grossly exaggerate any shortcomings a car has, making even the most reliable of cars look like ticking time bombs. I've owned a long list of cars that are supposedly guaranteed to turn into a giant paperweight at any possible moment according to their forums. Vehicles of note are: - 996 C4S (like I even need to list the "major" issues) - B5 Audi S4 (turbos) - Ford F-250 with the 6.0L Powerstroke (EGR, headgaskets/head bolts, oil cooler, injectors, coolant, more) - Second gen Mitubishi Eclipse Turbo ("crankwalking", similar to the IMS issue with M96s, but it happens to the crank) - Early VW 1.8Ts (oil sludge) Despite their reputation as unreliable turd boxes, all of the above cars were/are totally reliable and never left me stranded or broken down. On top of that, EVERY one of them had at least 100k miles on the clock at some point during my time owning them.

POST 10Original post

OMG - a 996 in the rain?? you know how dangerous that is!! - quick, to the bat cave! and as for the OP - I have the 2013 track dates - PCA will only host 7 (3 at PR and 4 at Ridge) but T2 has a good number - and if you are solo or above, you can hook up with them - I will be at all the PCA dates...and some of T2's

I too have been experiencing many of these same symptoms for almost 2.5 years now. Can anyone please elaborate? Is there some sort of "Fun Guardian" I can install becasue I may be having way too much?

POST 13Original post

Seriously, post like this shows up quite a bit on Ferrari Chat forums. Funny but true(and more valid for pre 360 Modena owners).

POST 14Original post

I had these same symptoms!!! I kept taking it to the track and finally was able to induce a cat failure! I was really starting to worry but I feel better now that I have something to fix on it. I don't know what I'll do after this since the rest of the car is perfectly fine.

POST 15Original post

If you could share with us what oil you use, perhaps we could help you with your problem.

POST 16Original post

You forgot to add that owning the car makes you feel compelled to drive highway 2 to Leavenworth as often as possible. Clearly, the last pic was taken this week, since the guys in the background are all wearing shorts. We Seattlites don't switch to long pants until it gets below 32F... LOL

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 10073023

Please don't share the oil you use or this will quickly descend into a discussion about how insecure some folks are about their oil choice...and THEN, we may end up in another IMS discussion. ...Although it has been exactly 14.4 minutes since the last one...

POST 18Original post

Stop driving immediately. Have it flat beddded to flat6 asap Good luck

POST 19Original post

Sounds like the same serious issues I'm having.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10073049

I love that drive. If you want a REALLY great drive, once you get to Leavenworth, go through town and take a left onto Chumstick highway and do the loop back to Leavenworth. 30 miles of awesome, especially in the fall.

POST 21Original post

Capt, have you checked the flux capacitor for leakage? Otherwise, all sounds good.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 10072589

What? No LN Engineering Visor upgrade? It's just a matter of time before those things grenade.

POST 24Original post

Yes but have these been replaced recently? They're all ticking time bombs.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 10073023

this is his secret and yes he only drains the oil during track days....lmfao You Tube

POST 28Original post

I have the exact same symptems as you have apart from one day when I slowed to let a lovely young jogger cross the road. She shouted "Nice car".. I had it all on to restrain myself from shouting to her "Nice ****' lol.

POST 29Original post

If it doesn't burn any oil then, why is the oil thinner when it's time to change it?

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 10073302

They're big players in the after-market visor market.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 10073090

I'm with you there. That's a fantastic drive! We get over to Mazama and Winthrop a lot and the North Cascades Hwy (20) is unbelievable after it has been cleared of the gravel and sand when it opens. We do Hwy 2 through Winthrop when the gates close for the winter on Hwy 20. One of the best drives I have ever had was in my 87 cab early in the morning on the North Cascades Hwy in May... wow, what a drive! I literally had the whole road to myself from Diablo to Early Winters. "Porsche- there is no substitute."

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 10073329

Some sucker will end up buying that viper on the used market and wonder why his engine grenades a week later.

POST 33Original post

Have you checked the Pickney Flange? The Fenointner Valve? Blinker Fluid? One merely wonders... JKC

POST 34Original post

This fix will help you get over recent 996 maladies , hope it works.

POST 35Original post

Just got back yesterday from a 7 hour drive. All was perfect. In fact, I hit a milestone during the trip.

POST 36Original post

Congrats down south. How do you take a pic going 84 mph? Also why did you censor your avatar?

POST 38Original post

great posts! great sense of humour! they are made to be driven and enjoyed, sometimes youve got to leave these forums for awhile, overloads of miss information and of course lots of good info......enjoy...happy holidays!

I just put the snow tires on my 158k mile '99. I love it! Best car I've ever had.

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 10073159

Man, I was afraid that this would lead to the sun visor issue. I just solidified my denial on this one, thanks for bringing me back to reality and helping me to pull the trigger on the extended warranty for the C4S. I know if I don't buy it the visor is going to crap the bed next time out.

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 10074804

As was mentioned, cruise control is your friend! The avatar police told me to remove it, so I placed the "censored" banner over it instead. The photo is in no way risque, but whatever.

POST 42Original post

^^^ It used to be one of my favorite avatars so I was bummed you had to censor it. With all the other stuff in OT I am surprised they asked you to remove it.

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 10077820

OK, Porsche87, you've inspired me! It's been about a year, so I'm going to un-censor it and let's see what happens... If I go missing for a few days, you'll know what happened!

POST 46 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10078063

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with it right now. I think I'm going to raise the suspension a hair sometime in the near future though. I must be getting old. LOL And see, you CAN drive them in the rain!

POST 47Original post

I just got a "new" 2003 c 4 s, 37 k miles...loving it. My new DD and I love pulling into the parking garage and hearing the sound bounce off the walls.

Hey DownSouth, just noticed your no longer censored. Congrats!
