I replaced all my strut mounts with new X73 ones, new strut bearings, etc when I installed PSS9s myself....and guess what, same noise still there (though a different one did go away, the infamous "wooden ship" creak) So I replaced the TREs, with TRWs from Vertex.

But if you were going to replace your struts anyway since they have such high mileage on them, get new mounts for sure, and OE ones, Sunset or Suncoast.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Alright, so I have the front suspension clunk in my C4S. Hard to believe, I know. I think I've narrowed it down to the strut mounts due to: -Sway bar links recently replaced -No vibration at speed to indicate bad tie rods -Car tracks dead straight Now, the problem is with the drivers side only (that I can tell at least), but should the mounts be replaced as a pair? Or does it fall into the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" category?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My C4s has ~92k on it. Where did you see them for $100? They've been a bit over $200 where I've looked. As for the avatar, I still have my 944 as well.

POST 4Original post

POST 6Original post

When the TREs make the "clunk at low speed over bumps" noise, they are not worn. No play, no vibration, no bad tracking, just dried up grease and ball/socket binding. It is more age than anything else. I replaced all my strut mounts with new X73 ones, new strut bearings, etc when I installed PSS9s myself....and guess what, same noise still there (though a different one did go away, the infamous "wooden ship" creak) So I replaced the TREs, with TRWs from Vertex. The new ones were smooth as silk in my hands, stiff, but smooth. When I pulled out the originals TREs, they had zero play, very tight. I could not move them with bare hands. If I put one end in a vise, I could, though. Clunk is now GONE, baby. But if you were going to replace your struts anyway since they have such high mileage on them, get new mounts for sure, and OE ones, Sunset or Suncoast. And replace your motor mounts too.

POST 7Original post

Note that they strut mounts for a C4 or C4S are different than for a C2. The DP mounts mentioned above are for a C2. If you look on eBay the C4 mounts are all more expensive than if you go to Sunset Porsche or one of the other online Porsche dealer parts sources. I think I paid about $150@ for mine from Sunset. I would recommend replacing both as if one is dried out and has failed then the other is probably close to failing. You will need an alignment when you are done replacing them.
