NICE - how many trips did you make to the garage to "check on it" last night

on my 3.2 you can turn on one side of the car with no keys simply by putting on the blinker to one side or the other - for hopping out of the car parked in the street to pick up the cleaning I guess???

At that mileage, I would change/flush all fluids from front to back unless you have proof they were done.

Minimum draw on the battery but is supposed to help prevent the car being run into on dark, narrow streets (which a few hundred years ago was plenty wide for horses--what are we whining about???)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've wanted a 911 since I was a kid. I did some research (ok, a lot) and a 996 is by far the most bang for the buck.
I've read the horror stories about folks experiences with these cars. I had a PPI done and pulled the trigger today! Mechanic said the car will need an air/oil separator? eventually and no metal in the oil filter. Thank you for this venue for information and the opportunity to share.
The car drives like a dream, is beautiful and is unique. Look forward to being a member of this forum.
Wow, y'all don't mess around.
What would you like to know? '01 Carerra hard top (black) with 67K miles, paid $25K. Not sure what options are on the car vs what standard equip may be. It does have Xenon lamps (which adjust themselves and is really cool). It also has unique factory wheels that I'd never seen before.
I'd post pics if I knew how...
Thanks for your interest.
Glad you weren't scared off about the issues that so many Porsches have, but often the critics forget about those maladies that every model year seems to have. Welcome to Rennlist, someone will help you with posting pics.
Congrats on the dream realized, it does feel great! Once you get done with staring at her in the garage, you need to gets pix, otherwise ****HOLOGRAM****.
Enjoy the miles and smiles and welcome to a great group. These guys in here will help you all along the way, with answers to mod questions, DIY concerns....great group........enjoy.
Wow, thank you for all your interest and welcoming comments. I figured out how to attach a pic (thanks frisbee91).
Oh and Khaim3... Do it. These guys are right. I practically slept in it last night. Hope that feeling never goes away.
Congrats on your new purchase, beautiful car.
I'm a few steps behind you but in the same boat: always wanted a 911, and now I'm looking for the right one (a 966).
So that's an '01 - is it the 3.4L engine?
I'm really debating the 3.4 vs 3.6 - a lot of info out there about one vs. the other. Some say the 3.4 has more reliability issues than the 3.6, others say that's BS.
Any thoughts on this, as you've probably looked into it a bot before making your decision?
First and foremost, congratulations and welcome, it is a very rewarding experience owning one of these cars. I too wanted one since I was a child, and was lucky enough to buy one earlier in the year. Additionally, this forum is one of the best places to get information and support about these cars, and is a great community, and overall definitely adds to the ownership experience.
Congrats again.

Btw, those look like some type of BBS wheels, maybe BBS Mesh. If you have the wheel off at any point, look on the inside of the wheel and you should see a maker's mark.
well holy crud.....it's a black one !
everyone knows those are the fastest!
NICE - how many trips did you make to the garage to "check on it" last night
I have to admit - after 5 years every single time I get out of my car I talk to her. Most times I just say "that was F'ing incredible, thank you so much...you are one hot babe!"
sometimes I tell her other things, but that is between us
You got me excited. Here is the info on the car I was looking at.
http://www.luxmotorcars.com/1999-Por...5/Details.aspx
It has 6 owners. This is what the shop told me about the maintenance
(The only record we have from the current owner is the replacement of the transmission pinion bearing and IMS bearing. air/oil separator and oil change at 84k miles. Since he had the vehicle for such a short period of time, not a whole lot was required.)
What do you guy think?
I will have the PPI for sure but with 88k on the clock, I am a little hesitated.
Below is the carfax.
Uswrnk54,
Great looking car. At that mileage, I would change/flush all fluids from front to back unless you have proof they were done. Everything else for a 60K service. I would do this before using the car.
BUY a Bentley service manual. This forum, renntech, and the manual will be your best source of info for a fellow n00b.
Khaim - In regard to the yellow 911 - Their desciption indicates it is a C4 (they say 4x4), looks like a normal C2 to me. The trunk looks too deep to be a C4 (looks same as my C2). Also, the badge at the rear is in the wrong place. So either it was debadged and then rebadged or it has been in a rear collision.
Kind of weird (to me) that the CarFax is provided by a Toyota dealer about 125 miles West of where the car appears to be (Sacramento).
I do like the yellow seatbelts though!
Wow, can't believe the support already! It's raining here and it's KILLING me! Car won't be a dailly driver...
mdrosenb - decision on motors was simply cost driven. From what I've read the '03 and newer (3.6 motor) Has a few less problems. A '99 - '02 996 is simply the most cost effective (modern) 911 a available.
Thank you again for all the interest.
I do have a question. Why would I want to turn marker lights on just 1/2 my car?
Congrats on the new car. My sympathy on the regular cleaning of the Sport Classic II wheels....but they do look nice.
There should be a tag on the inside of your trunk lid that shows the options for your car. Copy those down, become a paid member of renntech.com and use their list to decode your tag to see what was on your car from the factory.
Rennlist & Renntech make a great combination.
Good luck with the car.
are you referring to the rear fog light?
it's a German thing....they are all like that -its a great way to mess with your friends who think you are a snob now...turn it on while they are following you to the local pub and they will insist your "new car" has electrical issues
SUCKER!!!
wait till you get THAT bill!!

ivangene - no I'm referring to the headlight switch where, if you pull out and turn it to the LEFT you can turn on side marker lights for just 1 side of the car... Why would I want to do that?
I'm aware of the rear fog light function & I agree it is cool. Only for those who know !
OH that is a city parking light IIRC
on my 3.2 you can turn on one side of the car with no keys simply by putting on the blinker to one side or the other - for hopping out of the car parked in the street to pick up the cleaning I guess???
ficking strange but - yup....just fricking strange!!
there is a thread at the top of this page called things you didnt know about your 996 - read some of those...they are amazing, kwirky, uniquely german!
Why? That's easy. For parking on narrow streets, you can leave the small front "city light" and one rear tail illuminated on the side near traffic flow. Minimum draw on the battery but is supposed to help prevent the car being run into on dark, narrow streets (which a few hundred years ago was plenty wide for horses--what are we whining about???)
LOL - 'm not whining
I LOVE MY CITY LIGHTS!
use them all the time - just because they are cool though not because I am on narrow streets picking up some pastries
nice flying weather ehh......
I am parking my car for the day - maybe
I suppose, for a quick trip into the store. Wouldn't want to leave them on too long for fear of the battery dying.
Speaking of fancy lights. My rear fog light is out (assuming just a bulb). Have not even looked how easily accessed the bulbs are. I'm not in for a 2-hour cuss-fest am I? Also, the rear fog light is on the drivers side correct?
Congratulations and welcome to Rennlist! In the future if you are interested in bullet proofing your engine give us a call.
Take a look at what can be done with the so called "unreliable" 3.4L M96 engine. Link:

- Julio A
The side marker thing is a TUV requirement. Like the USA CHMSL.
Just to be sure you are pulling the switch to the 2nd detent for both front and rear fog lights?
Drivers side and pretty easy to pull the light assy. You will see the engine lid emergency latch cable when you do.
