Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Fellow RL's! I am trying to help a friend with '99 996 with a manual transmission problem. According to him dealer wants to charge him $10K for a trani rebuild. The problem is: pops out 2nd & / or 3rd gear. Has whining and slight vibration from the stick. Mostly noticed on deceleration,....gear engaged. Difficult to up-shift through the gears. Can anyone recommend a shop or private party that you trust? He lives in the Foster City area of San Francisco Bay Area. He is open to the East Bay Area as well. Willing to drive within reason to a reputable place. His 996 has about 130K on the clock. Thank You for your help. Steve Thank You for your help. Steve

POST 2Original post

I was pleased with the Renn Shop in Santa Clara.

First off I wouldn't drive that tranny any more. If it's your R & P on the edge you don't want them to explode. I learned that the hard way when I kept driving and cracked the case and destroyed a LSD....... The shop that built and maintains my race cars rebuilds M96/97 transmissions. Only a few shops actually rebuild them as it takes a 60k press to remove the gears off the main-shaft. I will attest to their fine work and reasonable pricing. PM me for contact info if interested.... PS: Dealers are such ******....

Yay Foster City! Grew up and spent 15 years living there. JR's shop is good. Drop him a line. They'll take good care of you.

POST 5Original post

I blew up my transmission at Thunderhill a couple years ago and had it rebuilt by Jerry Woods in Campbell. They did a fantastic job and charged a fair price. I can also recommend BR Racing in Los Gatos. They've done extensive work on my 996 and I think they're exceptional (not cheap, but the best).

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys, THank you for the replies...I at least have something to go by. As a sidenote: I took one of Jerry Woods classes back in 2000.

POST 7Original post

Another shop to try would be heyer performance in mnt. View. Was granny fluid ever changed?

POST 8Original post

I live in Southern California but I sent my transmission to Boulder, Colorado. Their website is: http://www.gboxweb.com/index.html They help with the pick-up and delivery of the transmission and their turn-around time is 2 to 3 days after they get the transmission (which is usually one to two days). They do an amazing job for a really, really good price. They know what they are doing. It is DEFINITELY worth a call to discuss your options. You can have your Indy pull the transmission, put it on a pallet and have the freight company pick it up. Get it back in a few days all fixed up and have your Indy put it back. PM me if you need more info or the costs. Let us know know it goes.
