Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I removed and replaced the gas cap, but I didn't hear any burpping noise.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As I returned from a 4 hour hwy. trip and slowed/stopped for some suburban stop lights, I discerned a constant, high frequency humming sound (female voice range?) that seemed to emanate from the front of my beloved '99 996 (66K miles). So I experimented a bit to isolate the source; (a) it is unaffected by road speed or rpm, (b) it is unrelated to HVAC fan settings.
Upon arrival at home, I pulled into the garage, left the engine running, and opened the frunk and engine lid. Then I walked slowly around the car listening for the likely source.
The hum was nearly inaudible at the rear of the car.
The hum did not sound noticeably louder in the frunk area, compared to inside the car...about the same.
The hum was definitely loudest in the area behind the right front wheel...in the fender well area.
My first suspicion is the electric fuel pump. But...your thoughts will be appreciated.

I vote for:
1. Rad fan running on low after hwy driving then urban stop and go
2. Fuel pump
3. Fuel evap system
Being in Florida, my Rad fans run a lot...more of a whooshing sound. When they run on high, it sounds like a jet fighter waiting for take off if you get out and walk around the front of the car. Kinda cool sounding. Maybe you have something stuck in the fan (leaf) or a bad fan bearing. Otherwise, I would burp the fuel system (remove cap and put it back on). Did you refuel? Overfilling might have gotten some liquid fuel in the evap canister and it is purging. After a couple of runs it might just go away.
I removed and replaced the gas cap, but I didn't hear any burpping noise. But the humming now sounds much fainter; maybe its my imagination, though.
Is there any diagnostic for assessing the health of an aged fuel pump? If not, I may just have it replaced as a "piece of mind" thing.
In the world of "pay me now, or pay me later", I'm a pay me now kind of person.
