bump steer is caused by suspension geometry changes NOT going from 18" to 19" wheels.

Not to mention the balance of one wheel is so far off it looks like the guy balancing my wheels once the tires were put on used a whole "hershey" bar of weights to correct the imbalance.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Hey i saw this on some other forums so i stole it. everyone just post pics of the aftermarket rims you guys have on your cars. also if you want you can include the rim size offset and all that other stuff. o and i would start but i have the stock 17 so nothing to show off
I just put a set of ForgeLine VR3P's on my car. Only problem it rained on the way to the Wheel Source. I really like the wheels. Dave Schardt custom made the center caps for me. I think they enhance the look of the wheels.
Thanks for the complement. I just about drove Dave Schardt nuts looking at various combos. I saw the wheels with black centers but decided on the anthracite at the last minute.
Bowmanm98 what are the name of the rims and what kind of suspension do you have on your car? I have the same car and I have been looking for a rim and suspension set up.
Here (was) my 2001 996 C2 setup. BBS 18" LM (8x10) 225/40 285/30 on H&R suspension. I really like the look compared to the stock turbo twists I had on my previous 1999 996.
I also included a shot of my current 993 with 18" Kinesis K28's (loving them) which are lightweight 3 piece wheels. They look great on a 996 also but they're expensive.
what are your guys opinions on these rims
there cheap and they look good just don't know if there would be any problems with them. wheel dynamics is a company that sells them and they say they have been around since the 80's or somthing like that so i guess they know what there talking about
I used Wheel Dynamics for my Porsche original 19" 997 rims - great guys to work with - Porsche enthusiasts.
They do OEM wheels and copies, and I had a look over a few of their copies when I was in the store in LA - looked good quality and finish.
Sounds like a sweet deal if you like the look & the price.
Chris.
You asked for opinions on those wheels, so here goes. I don't care for the look of those wheels. To me, there is something odd looking about the "double dish" look of the wheels. By "double dish" I mean the spokes move out from the rim to the center hub, and then the hub area is concaved to allow for the offset needed to accommodate the wide lip. I just think that particular wheel looks strange.
I was thinking of ordering those wheels!
The offset will work on a 996 but as discussed, the reare will stick out an extra .4 inches...which shouldn't be a problem.
i think they look good and i think im going to get them the only thing that would stop me from getting them is if they would ruin handling (i don't really mind a worse ride comfort since there 19). so of course once i get them 1999c2cab your welcome to come by and see them on my car.
i also forgot to add that the victor equipment rims they have look good too. but again i don't know if i trust victor equipement. if any one knows anything about them please tell. o and heres the wheeldynamics website
http://www.wheeldynamics.net/Wheels.html
you guys need to pick out wheels from work, fikse, kinesis, bbs and oz for the 911. that's about it. the techarts are freakin' heavy as all heck. go big or go home . 19s only unless you go to the track then just keep some 18s around.
Alan - that is not correct. Going from a 10" wide rim with a 65mm offset to an 11" wide rim with 67mm offset would extend the outer lip by 11mm. The inner lip would move 15mm toward the inside (less room).
Joe (1999C2Cab) is correct. The Wheel Dynamics wheels are 19x10" with a 56mm offset, which will extend the wheel by 9mm versus a 10" with 65mm offset.
You missed Champion's. They come in Porsche sizes w/the correct offsets and they are forged (very strong and very light). I have the RG5 in GT3 sizes and offsets on my car (the fronts and rears weight less than 20 lbs. each).
Here are some various pics of my cars and wheels over the years... My TT is on jack stands waiting on the third set (LAST SET!) this year. Sportec Mono 10's
Russ - the wheels look good. I am not really "in to" painted wheels, but I like yours. Have you thought about painting your brake calipers red? The red would really stand out and bring added dimension to the nice looking wheels. Just a thought.
That pic of Russ's car is actually old. He bought red paint to do the calipers as you suggested. However, he decided to do a couple racing stripes up and over the hood and down the back of the car, so it looked more like a Shelby Mustang. By the time he was done, he was out of red paint.
Maybe next weekend.

I'm somewhat ambivalent about painted wheels as well, but with the machined lip I think it works. Thanks. I was thinking the same about red calipers. It would look good sitting there, but I also was digging the all black look. I'll have to paint the rotor hats now though.
Rosen... shut the hell up.
What year C4S is that and model name of aerokit and TechArt wheels?? I'm currently in the market for a p-car..a C4S..I've yet to drive a 996TT...(refer to my various posts here and the 996 Turbo forum). Thanks!!
I started a thread on painting the calipers and another thread on painting the rotor hats. You could probably do both at the same time and save quite a bit of time.
If you spray paint the hats, make sure you cover your car with a drop cloth (a cheap plastic one will do) to protect the car from overspray. It's a B!TCH to get the over spray off. Don't ask me how I know!
Errr... no....not at all.
There are some seriously gorgeous cars here but I dig Alan's the most. I hate to be a copy cat but that is definitely the direction I want to go with mine as well.
Here are a couple pics of my race wheels. These are CCW (Complete Custom Wheel) 3-piece classic race wheels. They run about half the price of Fikse, Forgeline, Iforged, etc. The fronts are 18x9.0" with 235/40 MPSC's. The rears are 18x11.0" with 295/30 MPSC's.
I still like my classic 18 inch rims....but have been thinking about black rims for about 1 year now....I think after the winter...I will have another serious look...but for now...they stay
MTV that was tim's old C4S I think he has had at least 20-30 cars since. Some came and went so fast Tim did not even know he had them... In fact I think he has a new car in the garage this week. Someone should probably let Tim know.
I think he has ADD. He sold the car locally and said that he does see it every now and then. It was in deed a very Hot looking C4S! Tim's "Porsche" now is a 993TT if you pick up a car let us know we would love to meet up for lunch & drive sometime.
Thanks a lot for the invite Sandoval!! You wouldn't happen to be related to a Mario Sandoval (SFBayArea) or Phil Sandoval (Folsom, CA) would you?!? Couple of really nice guys I've met over the years (Intel).
Anyways, I might be down in Denver this weekend to take a look at this Turbo over at Rocky Mtn Eurosport. Have you dealt with these guys before?? Also, in terms of PPI and future service, where do you guys go?!?
Wished this car had at least black doors to take some of that red away. I do like all the carbon fiber though.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...QQcmdZViewItem
The deviating black carpeting and red leather looks so freaking hot! I really like it. I would talk to Tim about RMES he has dealt with them I have not. For service Stevinson woul be your best bet in Denver. When you take your car in ask to have "Chance" service your car. If you meet up with us Chance will most likely be there. He has been my co-pilot on a few drives. Cool guy and knows his stuff. He is also a member here and on 6speed. Get a PPI if you get serious. I really like that color combo especially with the full Carbon interior.
Lets see. I sold it a while back (unfortunatly)
TA replica front bumper
Misha rear spoiler
19in TA Formulas
All trim painted body color
H&R Springs
GHL Exhaust
BM SSK
And it was an awsome car. To bad a moron owns it now.
Thanks Tim!! Those would've been the mods I'd gone with as well based on past experiences with my bmws (love the feel of the shortshift kit, had H&R springs with Eibachs as well..firm but not jawbreaking). I also do intake and chip...best bang for your $$$. I have a home close to Dinan in Morgan Hill, CA so I'm there often just hangin' out and drooling over the cars they're currently working on.
Do those TA rims come in 18s?? If you don't mind me asking, what model year was your C4S and how much did you let it go for?? Thanks again!!
Alan C, you're wheels are so frighteningly awesome. I'm literally jaw-dropped-wide-open dazed right now. Love the color, the design, etc. I'd post mine but I have plain old Sport Designs.
I like the look, but am thinking about going back to the 18" 10 spoke OEM Sport wheels. The wheels are Champion RG5 Monolites 19x8.5 and 19x10, tires are Michellin Pilots 245/35/19 (f) & 275/30/19 (r).
I don't have a good pic readily available, but I am "weak in the knees" for the Carrera 2 classics. I think they are the sweetest rims that came stock for the 996.
My girl gave me a 50-200mm Lens for X-Mas she was also nice enought to let me open it early. I was excited to try it out. So I had some free time this afternoon to take some photos. It's an impressive lens to say the least...
Enjoy
Hey I like your wheel caps! Those are SILVER yet have color..the red and black!
Man..I want those! I just bought the silver ones...and I am still selling my gold ones. Dang it...those look great. I will google BOOTHE DESIGN...unless you have a linky.
Thanks!
EDIT - $90 each? That is crazy man! Dang...I really think that super crazy money....too rich for my blood. Suddenly my wheel caps look much better.
Sandoval, I kept hearing the theme music to Knight Rider while I was looking at your pictures. That is truly the most unreal car on here. Man, she's a beauty! It's just so cool knowing that there's other Rennlisters out there who love their cars as much as I do.
Don, those sport designs DO look great! Out of curiosity, where might one pick up some chrome lug nuts? And I'll also be power searching on Boothe designs unless you or AsianImage come back first. Sweet!
Here is a lesson learned about sleeze-bay. Bought these wheels and every single thing is wrong. Offset, lug cone angle, cheap center caps that allow water to saturate the lug bolts. Not to mention the balance of one wheel is so far off it looks like the guy balancing my wheels once the tires were put on used a whole "hershey" bar of weights to correct the imbalance.
And the most important thing I failed to mention; they are not HUBCENTRIC, came with plastic spacers, WTF.
Wow! Absolutely beautiful cars...amazing! Love the pics. Hats off to all you guys, 100% Porshce enthusiats. Gota love it.
Nice touch on the chrome studs on the OEM Sport wheels. I just purchased a set of OEM Sport wheels for my Arctic Silver 996C2 with the Aero kit and was able to pick up the studs for around $5 each from Vertex. I will probably rotate them with my Champion RG5 Monolites...a little variety now and then won't hurt.
Keep the pics coming!!!
Guys,
Great shots of various wheels on here, just making my upgrade choice that much harder.
Question
:
is it hard to clean around all those bolt heads in the inner rims
? (I don't know the proper terminology.) The brake dust must get everywhere.
I am leaning toward less detailed designs, such as the Porsche OEM 5 spoke wheels.
Thanks,
CP
These are OE Porsche wheels...they are not original to the car though.
I'm actually thinking about selling these and getting the 19" Carrara S wheels that were posted earlier.
Mark(MFig),
I would get 18's intead. It is well documented by the pros that the 996 is not meant to be run on 19s. Causes bump steer. Unless a pro shop do your allignment and do some minor mods, its very hard to chase the allignment on the 19s for the 996.
bump steer is caused by suspension geometry changes NOT going from 18" to 19" wheels. in a nutshell bump steer is controlled by the toe. as the suspension compresses toe changes occur thus changing the steering angle without changing steering wheel input.
FWIW i had 19" wheels on my c2 with NO bump steer. i only went back to 18s because there's a better selection of track tires. there are plenty of street 19" sizes.
http://www.longacreracing.com/articles/art.asp?ARTID=13
Thanks for the explanation karlooz.
I can confirm that I do not get bump steer with the 19"s, they feel very well planted and steering is predictable and positive on the road.
You do notice, going from 17" to 19", that the ride changes due to the lower profile, but it's not extreme or uncomfortable.
On tires, there appeared to be only 4 brands that provided 19" sizes for the wheels, so agree that choices are limited.
Seems to be the 11" rear that causes the most issues.
The Toyo's I selected have proved to be excellent, and really shine in wet weather - where they have proved to be the best tires I've had, on this and previous performance vehicles.
With such wide tires, wet weather performance is key, certainly for daily road use.
Can't comment on track tires.
Chris.
CDODKIN,
Sorry, I was out of town. Just logged in today since I left. I have read in a couple of german auto magazines, and one of them is Excellence, and also from a PCA Tech Rep that the 996 suspension was not engineered to have 19 rims. The geometry of the linkages are maxed out to use 18 rims. The car feels ok in normal driving, until you hit those bumps where the feedback to the steering wheel is really pronounced and you could feel a slight pull to one side. Now Porsche motorsports in CA has racing linkages/arms to configure/modified to take the 19s. As you lower the 996, just with the 18 alone, the rear are already almost out of limits for the factory street spec allignment on the camber/toe in. /
Of course I'm not a pro.. I'm just basing
this from what I read and talking to master mech at Porsche of Midlothian, VA.
Yes, I do have 19" with Toyo's. Ride is a little harsh due to lower profile. No problem with bigger wheels. I did have Hergesheimer MotorSports aligned my car. Mark (owner) told me that he did some tweaks to it, but 996 with 19" is OK. Now the ride is so much better than before when I had 18" OEM Carrera 5 spoke.
This is a helpful discussion. I recall reading that 18" is as far as you want to go on the 996, but I don't recall why. Could it have been something to do with an affect on vibration?
Anyone have any comment on whether it's hard to clean wheels that have those boltheads on the inner circumference?
Typically wheel size limitations are based on the strength of the suspension components to handle the increased strees put on them from less rubber and air between them and the pavement. And clearance.
Here's the issue with 19s on a 996 as I see it. If you mount 19s with 997 size tires the taller diameter will effectively increase your R&P ratio making your car slower. If you use the very low profile xxx/25/19 tires you have almost no sidewall and almost no sidewall flex. This might sound good for handling but it isn't. I learned about this when a Hoosier engineer explained why I shouldn't run 285/30/18s on the back of my racecar. Without getting too deep into something that I really don't understand very well, the tire sidewall is designed to mange both acceleration torque and turning torque. (I'm kind of making this terminology up but the basic idea is there.) Think of your car accelerating out of a corner. The tire engineers want the tire to be flexing just enough both sideways and backwards to maximize the tire adhesion. If it's too small you'll reduce the effectiveness of the tire when under stress. So, in all likelihood, you'll get poorer performance from 19s.
Having said that, I'm on the waiting list for a set of 19s for my street car. Go figure.
Jim
As you say Jim, I don't think the lower profile tires present any issues for street use.
I went with 235/35/19 and 315/25/19 (Front/Rear) with my 19"s, and I'm happy with the way the car handles.
I don't see people with 19" rims on the track, so you're tire man probably has a good point.
For me, 19" is all about the look of the car - without compromising my day to day driving
Tito cdodkin! Mine is for street use only. I don't go 60 mph around turn. Just for the good look. Sidewall or no sidewall, it doesn't effect my ride much.
They recommend either 295 or 315/30/18 in back and 245/35 or 40/18 in back. I use 315/30/18 and 245/35/18.
BTW, here are my favorite wheels.
Merry Christmas.
Jim
Great posts! The PO put some rash on the wheels and I had a missap with a curb (duh!) so I need to either get these replaced with the same or move on to different wheels...I really like these wheels...anyway, does anybody know exactly what wheels I have? They are 18's and I think they came with the car but can't confirm.
Mike,
They are forged magnesium one piece BBS racing wheels. They are very strong and very very light but a little spendy. Probably not practical for a street car. I love the way they look though.
Jim
Forge magnesium??!! I only see those on sponsored track cars!! hinting their $$$$ do you mind sharing the cost?(or email me at
[email removed]
) I'm just really curious, 'cause I've been looking for real light set. They really look awesome to me. I love the look of the wheels that keep the track car look!!!
TNX~Mike
Mike I have been drooling over the BBS motorsport wheels with the magnesium centers as well but have no idea where to buy them. Carnewal has them for roughly $4-5000 after the crappy Euro conversion depending on F/R size combo.
Hi Mike,
I'm looking for another set now but hoping to find a used set. New it's my understanding that they are around $8500+ but I'm not sure where you can buy them. I'll let you know if I find some.
Dell,
The mag center wheels should be easy to get from BBS motorsport in Atlanta. Here is their web site.
http://www.bbs-usa.com/index.php?id=320
If they won't sell them to you directly you can get them from any big race shop.
Warning, no mag wheels are really meant for use on the street. Magnesium needs careful attention and the aluminum halves on the wheels Dell is looking at are very thin and bend easy.
Happy New Year,
Jim
Thanks Jim and Dell!! Wow those magnesium are really high up there!!
By the way, I found a lesser price BBS source. Have you guys heard of them? No affiliation with me. I'm looking at the BBS REs and they're $100+ less than others I've seen.
http://www.hrpworld.com/TunerLine.cf...ction=category
Well, mine are the same as your 'befores', and I think those are the most beautiful wheels I have ever seen. I personally don't like any of the custom wheels that I have seen in this thread (except those Sportec ones, they were quite nice).
My 2 cents.
Hehe... I was wondering how long it would take for someone to comment.
The first pic was taken in the shade on a sunny day with a Canon SD400.
The second pic was taken on a rainy day with a Nikon D50.
what 's the difference b/t the TSW MONTAGE, TA, and the Victor Equipment? they seem to all look alike.......i know the TA's are heavy....... so why would anyone pay $5K for the TA while the Victor and TSW are only $1100?????????
Let me start by saying that this post is AWESOME! Great info on what has to be one of the most applied mods for Porsche's. So I started out looking into this forum to figure out what 19" wheels I would get but after reading some of the comments on why NOT to go 19 on a 996 I am now wondering if I should go 19 or stay with 18's. I need your advice on this one
I don't intend on tracking the car but I do like to enjoy my Street Driving
nothing crazy but just drive the car like it's a Porsche and not a Honda. Anyway, not to take this thread of subject because I love looking at all these pics but a quick yes or no on 19's based on no tracking and driving the car mainly on the street would be appreciated. AND KEEP POSTING THE PICS...loving all the cars
One more thing...What's a good place in Sacramento to get Wheels??

While size is a factor that can alter the rear end gear ratio and thus performance (slightly), unsprung weight is as big if not more of a factor. I recently switched from Champion RG5 19 Monolites to 18" OEM Sport wheels (2 piece BBS), and noticed a difference, again only slightly. The 18s feel "heavier" as though I have a full tank of gas...all the time, or an extra passenger. The Champions were 10 lbs lighter than the BBS wheels which translates into 80 lbs of unsprung weight per wheel! IMO, weight of the wheels requires consideration if youre concerned about performance, otherwise get what appeals most to you or what you think looks best. There are many Pcars with both 18s and 19s.
After seeing vincent's (screameleons) black on white sweet looking 19's and reading jmchris01's comments as well as talking to a fellow Porsche/racer here in Sac and telling me that going 19 won't be an issue for me at all, I've decided on going forward with 19's!! Please keep the pics coming, I never get tired of looking at all those sweet Porsches....

Champion RG5s and my new OEM BBS Sport wheels. Although the Champions are 19s and the Sports are 18s, there is a significant difference in weight. The Champions weigh 17 & 19 lbs dry (19x8.5 and 19x10), with tires (f) 235/35/19 and (r) 275/30/19 they weigh 40 and 43 lbs respectively. The OEM 18" BBS wheels are heavy at 24 & 29 lbs (18x7.5 and 18x10), with tires (f) 225/40/18 and (r) 285/30/18 they weigh 43 and 53 lbs...quite a difference, and a bit of a dissappointment in comparrison to the Champions.
JMChris do you notice a difference in your ride or performance with the heavier wheels. I ask be cause I have 18" Turbo wheels on my cab and Im getting 19" TA Formulas and I know they are heavy. Just wondering Thanks
YES! The car seems a bit heavier both at a roll and from a slow-dead stop with the 18s. I would equate it to the difference between having a full tank of gas or having a 170 lb passenger. Cornering, a slight difference, a bit tighter, but the 18s have new Pirelli P-Zeros. I have not driven the car with the new 19" Pirellis on the Champions...they are boxed and ready to be sold.
The smoothness of the ride is absolutely the same (25 3/8" vs 24 3/4" in height difference) not much noticeable other than the "heaviness" in the throttle response with the 18s. With the M030 suspension, the ride is generally a bit stiffer. I am not that happy with the 18s because of the weight. I never would have suspected the OEM 18s would have weighed 29 lbs! And while I'm not certain, I believe these wheels are standard on the European MKI Cup Car (GT3)...hard to imagine!
You guys have some great cars there! (Especially you Aerokit I folks

Nice wheels! I have been contemplating with those C22s, just like you got them for a very long time now. How do you like them?? Pros Cons? If you dont mind, could you also tell me how much they cost you and your source?
Thanks much.
Thanks! I found out they are made by RH and they are the AG Cup 1-piece cast aluminum wheels. Here is the website if you are interested:

Just got my stock GT3 wheels back from the local wheel refinisher. Custom "black chrome" paint job with a twist. I told the painter the basic gist of what I wanted and I ended the conversation with "Do what you think will look cool." He did a fantastic job.
Barrels painted black with the black chrome effect on the lip and spokes. More "chrome" paint on the lip and fading into the spokes, leaving the spokes fairly dark. "GT3" script painted yellow to match my calipers.
The reflective part of the paint picks up the light around it and reflects it. Lighting and colors vary depending on the surroundings.
First two pics done by a pro at Saturday's autox. "Max911" deserves kudos for a great job at the event. Last pic of the wheel is by me earlier today in the rain with my dirty car.
Compare the pic of the parked car with the moving car. The moving car looks like it has polished lips. That's the cool thing about a paint job like this. For you folks in the British Columbia area, I had this done at Panther Precision Machine in Surrey. Drop me a PM if you'd like more info or call them up and tell the guy you heard about this from "Allan - the GT3 guy" and they'll take care of you.
No affiliation, etc. Just a very, very satisified customer.
Cheers,
Thanks Keith. I don't have a good side shot of the car yet, just this crummy 3/4 angle I quickly took yesterday in the rain of my dirty car. I'll take some better pics this week.
Cheers,
To all the guys with Black rims, where did you get the black lugbolts, and locks? I was able to find black caps, but that does not solve my wheel lock issue as the caps don't fit over the lock.
Any of you wheel experts know anything good/bad about Roderick wheels? Was thinking about putting some 19"'s on my 2004 C4S Cab.

"heligear - whats the et on them rims? awesome"
Hey thanks, I can't remember the et and I'm not at home right now, away at work for a couple of weeks yet.
Harddock, are your rear Sport Techno wheels 11x18 with 295/30x18 tires? I was told that this configuration in the rear of a 1999-2001 might rub unless the fender wells are rolled. Have you had any issues?
I know this is an old thread, but I was finally able to get a set of undamaged, non-defective Sport Techno wheels from my Porsche dealer. On the front, I was still able to use my 15mm H&R bolt through spacers with no problems (245/40x18). I also had no issues with the rear wheels, which are 295/30x18. I had some concerns about rubbing in the rear, but no problem.
Here's a photo.
Thanks man! i have the fabspeed muffler system and high performance intake system coming shortly, will install it over the winter.
Thanks for the comments.
