Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am new to the 996 and I have started looking for a 996 to use for DE Track Days and occasional trips. In my area it seems the nice cars are all Cabriolet's and the deals seem to be on the Cabrio's about a 5K savings.
Why are the Cabrio's cheaper?
How much of a penalty is it to have a 996 Cabrio on a DE Track Day?
Any essential changes I should do before I take the car out on the track?
Thanks,
Gary
Depends on the track and the organizing body. Some want roll bars on the cars, some might want hard tops. But the car itself is still capable on the track. See my recent thread on DE with a cabrio:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...96-cabrio.html
DE doesn't require roll bar. Timed events or competitive events do (along with race suits, harness, etc).
If you are getting into advanced or intermediate levels DE, check with the track organizer. Some may require a coupe.
If you aren't looking for cabs, I wouldn't get it for the sake of a better deal. You can expect slightly less rigid chassis and more rattles from a cab. The rattles can be fixed but it takes a lot of time to sort them out. Also, the soft top requires more attention to keep it in good condition.
If you do want a cab, the 996 has a fully automatic top that works very well. 997 cab top is event more solid (less rattle). Both will do track days fine. Just check with the regulations.
It's the most fun you can have with clothes on...
If you advance the video to 2:12 onwards you will see the thrill of slingshot passing a car and then having clear space to really open up the car....
DJantlive, I wasn't originally considering a Cab but there are far more of them for sale and at much better prices. I would have thought the Cab would command a premium but that doesn't seem to be the case in my limited searching experience. I guess a Cab wold be fun for cruising around but the coupe might give me more confidence on the track. Thanks,
the penalty is the extra weight - so it's a big deal to some...non-issue to others

as a point of clarification, some DE's do require a rollbar (unless equipped with a pop-up rollover bar from the factory). I don't know if the 996 has a pop-up bar or not...
I use my 996 Cab for DEs. There should be no problem. The 996 does have a pop-up roll bar and meets the PCA criteria. I also put my hardtop on for the track days. If your primary motivation is to track the car, you should get a coupe because there is less chassis flex and they car weighs less and will help with faster lap times.
I wouldn't recommend any 996 for track days unless it were a GT3 or Turbo. If you decide to get a 996 you must upgrade the oil system. See my recent post about my engine failure.
Hi Slicer,
I saw you post and can feel you pain, I had an engine let go on the second stint of it's first track day. It sounds like you are going to get a very nice car to replace it though.
Thank You! I'm excited about the replacement car with the new DFI engine. The Cayman will not see any track time and will almost exclusively be driven by my wife. I will likely get my M3 on the track after all of this blows over in a few months. I watched a bunch of modified M3's get flogged all day without issue at the same event that took the 996.
