About being nervous, change the oil often (6 months or 5,000 miles) with a quality synthetic from the Porsche Approved A40 list and if the trans fluid has never been changed (no record) make sure you change it (ignore the low mileage) and use the Porsche factory fluid and then drive the crap out of it often (after it has warmed up to operating temperatures of course)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I just bought my first Porsche. It's a 2002 Porsche 911 with 23,462. I love the car so far. After reading all the stuff on here about the 996 I have to admit I'm a little nervous. I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. Thanks, Jody

POST 2Original post

Congrats on your car - I remember those days well! Don't sweat all the stuff you read on forums - most of these cars are super reliable. You have to remember that the sample size distorts the actual problems, and those with issues tend to post the most. The guys who never have any problems are too busy driving their cars to post up. Keep up on the maintenance and have fun with it - it's just a hunk of metal after all. BTW - pics or no one will believe you.

POST 3Original post

Welcome and remember these cars like to be driven so don't be shy. Where are the pics???

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. This is a pic I took in the parking lot at work.

POST 6Original post

Nice, I love the Aero kit and wheels. Don't read too much into everything your read on forums about 996's. I think we all went through some level of anxiety reading about "possible" issues just remember most people never post their positive experiences. like another poster said enjoy the car and drive it and as long as you follow through with regular maintenance you should be fine. I have had mine 2.5 years as a daily driver and except for minor issues has been problem free as any car I have ever owned. Enjoy

POST 7Original post

Welcome Jody! Nice ride you've got there, but these Black ones are a PIA to keep clean (it seems like I'm always detailing it & it doesn't even get dirty)! jmo

POST 8Original post

Think you're nervous? Try driving your brand new 996 the day after you buy it and have the oil pressure sender fail. That'll pucker you up real quick.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 9965209

Lol! I remember not long after I got mine it was under the carport & it had been raining most of the day & was really humid & the next morning I cranked it & went to leave & it starting shaking, rattling & missing & popping (you get the idea). I don't have to tell you the 2 things that came to mind! Well after freaking out for awhile I called an indy & he told me to wait several hours & try to start it again (I was thinking how the hell is this going to help) but sure enough the distributor cap had gotten moisture in it & that was all it was! At the time I would have never thought that's all it was though.

POST 10Original post

Welcome to the board Jody I see the original pumpkins are still on the car. Strange to see them along with all the other added mods. Have the windows been tinted? Nice looking job. Now get out and get that milage up to a reasonable number for a 2002 car. It's been a bit of a garage queen. Drive it like you stole it and dont cruise along anything lower than 2500 revs. You probably got a good one. The odds of you picking a bad one are very low. Think:- if only 5% of all 996 are bad, then stand 20 next to each other. I will bet you what ever you want that you couldn't pin point the bad one. You would more likely pick a good one. I say that so you can sleep at night. Now get driving and knock the crap out of it for a few months. Then after you know what it can do, start to drive normally lol

POST 11Original post

Thats the fast model 996. Lucky find Enjoy your cruising. The rear can break loose way before the front and don't get off the gas if the rear does start to break loose. The front breaks loose after the car is slidding 90 degrees to the path the car is on It's called oversteer.

As a near future 996 owner this is a very reassuring post to read (talking weeks now from when I'm going to start the active search) Thanks

POST 13Original post

Great cars.....you'll love the experience. As others have said don't get caught up in the negative. Read the articles, learn from others experiences and enjoy the car. It's made to drive and loves being exercised.

POST 14Original post

Jody - beautiful car! Good choice and I'm sure you will get less nervous as you spend more time with the car. As the others have posted, drive, drive, drive and you will learn to love the wonderful sensations of one of the best made cars in the world. I use mine as a daily driver and have found it very dependable. Nothing like walking out of work and seeing your car just waiting for you. Take a weekend and get to know your car, poke around inside the engine compartment, check all your fluid levels and tire pressures. If you don't know the exact history of maintenance, plan to change your oil/filter and air filter...it's a good way to experience a bit more about your car.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys for the compliments. I love it so far!! The previous owner did what I think are nice upgrades from the research I've done. He added a fabspeed stainless steel exhaust and sports cats. An ecu upgrade, k&n coldair intake and h&r lowering springs.

POST 17Original post

Congrats on the purchase Jody and welcome to Rennlist I love the Aero kit, I would also consider some Euro Clear Side Markers they look great with the black exterior.

POST 18Original post

Welcome! Don't be afraid to drive the **** out of it. Just keep it under 4k until fully warmed up and change the oil often. You may as well go ahead and embrace the forum induced anxiety so you can move on If you read here enough it will finally catch up to you. It got to me but I finally just accepted the risk of owning this car and let it go. I am much happier now.

+100. Above needs to be made a STICKY for all noobs and/or potential buyers to read.

POST 22Original post

Jody: Good choice. You found a nice collection of mods. My 996 is 13 years old in January having been in my possession for 9 years at 60K miles. Most fun I have had behind the wheel. I have maintainded by the book plus an LNE IMSB changeout. No surprises. As other posters have documented, the 996 model shares most of the toughness built into all those great Porsches of the past. And you can drive them every day and all winter as I do. Try that in an early 911 (donning flame suit).

POST 23Original post

Awesome...I love it!!! Enjoy the new ride and don't let the doom and gloom stories or the resident fear monger spoil it for you.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are any of you guys using the short shifter kits? I was told that it would be a good upgrade from the factory shifter.

POST 25Original post

Nice Aero Jody. The internet has a way of magnifying 996 troubles, take it all in stride.

POST 26Original post

Hi Jody: Congrats on the "new baby." You're gonna love it! Enjoy the miles and smiles. Don't fret the "problems" too much, they exist to a certain extent........ only you will decide the level of preventative maintenance, etc., that will give you peace of mind. I'm pretty sure, just like the rest of us, you will begin to do things to your car to personalize, it for various reason, and they will continue to make the 996 expericence spectacular. (i.e., I finally installed smoked clear side markers- and it make me smile). As for the short shift kit, I definately like it, but I should point out to you, especially if you live in a cold climate, first gear is very stiff, until things warm up a bit....just so you know. Now, if I could make one suggestion.......become member! R\ Scott

POST 27Original post

+1 This is a great upgrade from a factory shifter. Short throw shifter shift kits reduce shift distance by up to 35% depending on your model. That means more precise shifting and added sportier feel to the experience. For more information on shift kits we offer Click Here
