Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked last night and the tail lights were working, but I didn't check the brake lights or blinker.
Leading evidence: 'Check last night and the tail lights were working' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check last night and the tail lights were working' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was replacing the serpentine belt in my 2000 996 C2 tonight, and as I went to reinstall the airbox, I found this connector while fishing for the mass air flow meter connector. Any idea what it might be? This car just recently had the rear quarter panel replaced, but this mystery plug doesn't look like it has ever been plugged into anything. Could it just be an artifact in the wiring loom for a different model? Ideas?
I have a 99 C2 Cab and just searched around the passenger rear engine compartment. Can't feel anything. Has your car got the original wind spoiler on it that goes out at 75mph? If not then a PO has modded the car to a stationary spoiler and maybe this is the connector hanging loose. Other than that, it has me beat.
Just went and had a look at mine. That plugs into the base of the unit just to the right in your picture where the two brown capped connectors are located. Likely your right rear light unit is not working right now.
Thanks for the photo vange_c4s. I don't seem to have that connector plate under the other set of connectors. I wonder if that's a C4S thing? Do you have a manual or tiptronic? My C2 is a manual.
hi georgeco - i have a c4s manual - so not sure if this helps. i did not try and find any wires below this connection.
i assume that your connector is tied into the wire harness and is only so long. have you tried stretching the connector as far as you can and seeing what it might plug into? how about a mirror to help see?

This is the model prior to the 996. Wiper system has a 4 bladed flat plug requiring a 4 bladed flat socket which looks like what you have.
