Luckily she bought an extended warrenty which I used a few months afterwards to have a re built transmissioon put in the car.

I managed to put 3 litres in but it was still at least half an inch below the fill plug????

Anyway, whine not cured but I want to satisfy myself that I shouldn't top up the gearbox to the fill plug lip, can anyone clarify this?

Having read the various scare stories I decided to change the gearbox oil for some decent protective stuff that would hopefully prolong the life of the gearbox and quieten the whine.

I have a 1999 996 Carrera 2 with 80k miles. It has developed a gearbox whine on acceleration..... Having read the various scare stories I decided to change the gearbox oil for some decent protective stuff that would hopefully prolong the life of the gearbox and quieten the whine. I went for Motul molygear technosynthese 75w90. I had read gearbox capacity is 2.7 litres. When doing the change I emptied then filled expecting 2.7 litres to take me to the fill plug lip, or thereabouts, but it didn't... I managed to put 3 litres in but it was still at least half an inch below the fill plug???? Is this normal? Anyway, whine not cured but I want to satisfy myself that I shouldn't top up the gearbox to the fill plug lip, can anyone clarify this? Thanks.

Same as my owners manual says. I have the 99 C2 Cab.. APPROX 2.85 quarts/2.7 litres oil SAE 75 W 90 It does say Approx but just exactly what that means is 'Your guess as good as mine' I think the manual is referring to Imperial and not US litres. Imperial brings it over 3 litres US so it looks like you are OK. The manual is made not solely for the U S market. I doubt Porsche making a SPecial Manual just for the USA.. 1 Quart [UK] IMP = 1.1365225 Liters 2.7 quarts = 3.07 liters

Sounds like a pinion bearing going bad in the gearbox.

it is 3.5 quarts total. 2.7 for the trany and .8 for the diff.

My gear box/transmission had a whine develop after my wife bought the car. Luckily she bought an extended warrenty which I used a few months afterwards to have a re built transmissioon put in the car. I believe that it cost the warrenty people about $5000 to have it put in. It came across country from CA. Porsche of Lancaster PA did the job. Amazing how quieter the car ran afterwards.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
