Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My old plugs looked fine and coil packs looked like new with no cracks so I replaced the plugs and reused the coil packs.

Mine were, when I did the PSE hack, and I cleaned/flushed it all out, but could not find the source.

The plug change itself is easy if you have a little skill.

It blows my mind when people waste the time and money to take their car to a shop/dealer for minor maintenance like oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I decided to remove the mufflers before changing the spark plugs. Mufflers are easy to remove and there was way more room. I dont know why anyone would attempt to change plugs without removing the mufflers. I have every kind of swivel, extensions, etc. and there is no way I could have got my hands in there. The plug change itself is easy if you have a little skill. Be very careful unplugging connectors, removing coil packs, etc. and you should be fine. I do have the Bentley manual and that helps too.
My old plugs looked fine and coil packs looked like new with no cracks so I replaced the plugs and reused the coil packs. It was a good experience with my car and I hope others that were not sure about doing this themselves try it. I saved several hundred dollars in labor!
and,,, I was able to clean the engine easier.
I love working on my 996, these cars are so simple/easy to work on. It blows my mind when people waste the time and money to take their car to a shop/dealer for minor maintenance like oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, etc.
Did you remember to flip the long bracket bolt upside down? That, and new SS nuts & bolts makes for a real fast removal whenever you need to. Also, just curious, see those 2 sensors with the rubber caps on each side of the first coil? Were yours saturated with oil? Mine were, when I did the PSE hack, and I cleaned/flushed it all out, but could not find the source. So far, 8 months or so later, they are still dry. Yours look clean, but I assume that is the "after" shot.
Here is a photo of completed job and reason why I removed the wheels and mufflers for more room. I only flipped the bolts on the driver side because there was really no advantage on the pass side. That muffler is easy. Plug number 6 seems to be the hardest to change. Mufflers are so easy to remove that there is no reason not to for a DIY plug change. It also helps ensure you dont damage the coilpacks or wiring.
Not sure if I want to do the PSE tube. Im enjoying the stock exhaust for now.
There was a small amout of oil on one of the cam solenoids but could not tell where it came from. Cleaned and no more so I have no idea?? Plugs had also been changed before.
Only one more thing left for my 50000 mile service. I do the brake fluid flush this weekend.
