Although I do not really need the hardtop as I only plan to drive in the summer, it's just nice to have one to change the feel of the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For those scoring at home, I bought my 99 cabriolet a couple of weeks ago. It will be a Sunday driver, of sorts, and strictly a pleasure car. I have a company car I do my day to day driving with. I live in northern California where we have fairly predictable weather, so I don't expect to ever drive in anything other than sunshine. Which brings me to my dilemma. The car came with a hard top, but I do not expect to use it. It takes significant room in the garage, or a I build a hoist for it. Again, a lot of effort for something I'm not likely to use. Should I sell it? Or should I keep it? Any other bay area folks have one and actually use it? Thanks!!

POST 2Original post

If it has no use, sell it... besides, the 996 looks dorky with that hard top on.

POST 3Original post

On some tracks you will need it, if you ever track the car. Also for resale? Or sell it for ~$500.

POST 4Original post

Not Dorky! It's cool!!! Seriously, I like it for a variety of reasons. 1. Winter 2. Variety. It's two, two, two cars in one. 3. Track 4. It looks good. YMMV, but here's an ocean blue '99 cab, hardtop, at the track. I like it.

POST 5Original post

I say keep it and store it somewhere. It's a hard color to find/match, and see how nice it looks on the car in the above shot!? You only just go the car, it's too early to tell if you will never want to use it! And once you get rid of it, it will be pretty hard finding another one. Of course, my car has a hard top built in!

POST 6Original post

If you feel there is no need to have a hard top...then sell it. You do live in Calif.

POST 7Original post

How easy are they to put on and take off? Always wondered.

POST 8Original post

Easy to put on and take off, but it takes two people to manage unless you have a hoist. To the OP, I would say sell it if you don't need it and don't have the room.

POST 9Original post

Quick and easy 2-man job (if no hoist): do front latch first, then rear mounting pins. Tighten rear pins with 6 mm allen wrench (follow color-coded arrows on mounts or torque to 35 ft-lbs.). Done.

Ouch that was a kick in the canoles. I think mine looks very sharp. Plus I think your Cab will sell better with a Hard Top.

POST 11Original post

Dorky shmorky. I think the hard top looks great on the Cab, too. As for whether you should keep it or sell it, I'd say if you're really never going to use it then what's the point in keeping it? Suspending it indefinitely from your garge ceiling just to gather dust doesn't seem to make much sense. If you're up in the air on that answer then keep it until you decide otherwise. It's not like you're going to make a fortune off of selling it. If you're looking to sell your car at some point in the near future then having the hard top might help with the sale...but maybe not as much if you're selling to someone in CA. -Eric

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All good points, though I certainly don't want to appear dorky Sounds like I should keep it for a while and figure out my habits with the car before making any decisions. Thanks all!

POST 13Original post

^^^Yes to that. I also think they look good and its too early to call weather you might need it or not. I say install the hoist and just keep it.

POST 14Original post

If it stays it will be trouble, if it goes it will be double. The Clash.

POST 15Original post

It seems like the used market for these things is limited - I've seen them for sale as low as 200 (and as high as 1200). If you sell it and then decide you want one, you'll end up buying another hardtop and potentially having to paint it. There's no way you'd break even. If you have storage space, keep it for a few seasons. Who knows, maybe you'll want to drive in the rain sometimes.

POST 16Original post

Just my luck!!! I bought a 99 Cabriolet last year with no hard top included. And I live in Chicago. And who just happens to be all the way in Cali wanting to offload his hard top which happens to be the exact color Ocean Blue Metallic. Although I do not really need the hardtop as I only plan to drive in the summer, it's just nice to have one to change the feel of the car. Oh well, at least I dont have to deal with storage Being in Cali, it may not seem sensible to keep it, but if I were in your shoes, I would hang onto it (unless you want to give it away dirt cheap, then maybe we can talk about it ) Enjoy the car!

POST 17Original post

Make a hoist for it and then you can store it above the car and put it on by yourself when you want to. Here is a thread with a couple of homemade hoists referenced. If you do a search there are at least four types of hoists on 996 and/or 997 forums. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...oist-help.html
