Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I haven't done one of these, but it looks nearly identical to the process for replacing 944 trailing arm bearings.

Do I have to take the knuckle off the car to change a wheel bearing?
Although there may be a specialty kit (e.g., Sir Tools wheel bearing kit) to let you replace the wheel bearing with the wheel carrier in place on the control arm, you normally have to:

In fact, a manual is even needed to set radio station presets on a radio (still haven't done that!).

Suggestion
If you try to cheat and do this without heating the carrier or use the wrong mandrels to press the bearing/hub out, you'll likely end up with a pile of junk and have to buy a new carrier/hub (I've seen it happen several times with 944 trailing arm DIYers).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have one of the front wheel bearings that has gone bad. It's very noisy. Bought a new bearing for just ~$45. Great, but I can't figure out how to remove the old one.
I removed everything I could see from the knuckle. Removed the large 32mm center nut. But the hub won't come out. It dangles, something must be holding it, but won't come out. Do I have to take the knuckle off the car to change a wheel bearing? Are there any other tricks that I should know?
I also need help in finding shop manuals for my '2000 996 C2. I heard the only way is somewhere someone scanned them. Could you please direct me to the right place? Thank you.

I haven't done one of these, but it looks nearly identical to the process for replacing 944 trailing arm bearings. Although there may be a specialty kit (e.g., Sir Tools wheel bearing kit) to let you replace the wheel bearing with the wheel carrier in place on the control arm, you normally have to:
1. remove the wheel carrier
2. remove the stub axle / speed sensor (should press/tap out from front to rear)
3. use a press to press out the hub from the rear (this will leave the inner race attached to the hub)
4. remove the cover plate (held on w/ 4 bolts) and brake disk shield
5. heat the carrier to 100 C (max 120 C) and press out the bearing from the rear
6. press the inner race off the hub (start with 2-jaw puller, use press and jig to complete)
7. clean the bearing bore
8. re-heat carrier to 100 C
9. press in new wheel bearing
10. attach cover plate (27 ft-lb) and brake disk shield (7.5 ft-lb)
11. press in hub, being certain to use only the inner race as the press point on the back side, otherwise you'll destroy the bearing you just replaced
12. replace speed sensor and hub nut (new nut every time, tighten to 340 ft-lb and mark)
If you try to cheat and do this without heating the carrier or use the wrong mandrels to press the bearing/hub out, you'll likely end up with a pile of junk and have to buy a new carrier/hub (I've seen it happen several times with 944 trailing arm DIYers).
Thank you Doug! That was very detailed, I appreciate it.
It also was the worst that I feared, that I do not have the tools in my garage to do it properly. Those German engineers sometimes just make things difficult to keep their reputation!
I am glad I have a friend with a hydraulic press.
you need to lossten the stut bolt (the one that holds the sway bar link and take it out
then push the carreir down off the strut so you can push the sub shaft out
then you can use a on the car bearing tool to change it
Got everything done! Thank you very much to everyone who helped.
Working on a Porsche is not a rocket science but a shop manual is needed. In fact, a manual is even needed to set radio station presets on a radio (still haven't done that!).
Heating a casting to install a bearing is very common practice, and takes a lot of stress out of pressing an interference fit object into a bore.

An oven is the obvious choice for something that small. You can also wrap the carrier with insulating material (foil, shipping pad, etc.) and use a 1KW hot air gun if the ambient temperature isn't too low. Monitor the casting temperature with a contact thermometer such as a tire temperature gauge.
