Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking for the dimensions of the stock 1999 996 muffler/cans. If someone can tell me what the length / width / height of the can and the spacing between the inlet and outlet is I would greatly appreciate it. If you are within 30 miles of NYC (or we cross paths at an event or a strip club) ill even buy you a beer and show you why I need them - Have an idea I am working on. "IF" it works it would be a VERY inexpensive solution to sound (maybe a 'lil performance) with all off the shelf products. Add a little DIY elbow grease and it would be cheaper than a sound mod to the stock cans. Another thing that would be even more beneficial would be if someone knew of a diagram of sorts showing the exit of cat out to muffler plumbing. Anything you have would help but if you have measurement + bends and the degree of bend would be even more helpful. Regardless, if this works I will post pictures and share how its done. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

Go for it, buddy....probably the easiest way to do it is to bite the bullet and take off you cans. If you are thinking of modifying a 'glasspak' muffler(s), I think I would remove the rear bumper cover, insulation, and wheel. Or maybe a straight pipe from the headers to the cat? Give up driving the car for a week and let us know. I would buy the 'pattern'. BTW, there are some great pipe benders out there who can think in 3D. Good luck

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I wish it was that easy... Working on a car in NYC costs me 120-150 bucks an hour plus the time and transportation to get it to the only guy I trust to work on my car (its actually there now which is why I dont walk down to the garage with a tape measure LOL). Not thinking anything along the lines of glasspacks or anything like that. Too loud I would think - maybe if i was in the country. I found a couple exhaust companies that make a suitable sized muffler with in/outlet on the same side and roughly the same size of the stock muffler as well as a vendor that sells stainless mandrel bends pretty cheap (I believe the stock muffler is 17 1/2 inches long but that wasnt an accurate measurement - I took a tape to it while it was on the lift when i originally thought of this plan). I already bought 2 mufflers that are slightly shorter and narrower than "my crude" stock muffler measurements and columbia river mandrel bend part#sbk14 375 SS 409 Total invested so far with clamps is less than 250 (tax and shipping included). Fortunately, its not my only vehicle so time on a lift isnt an issue - except for the hourly fee of course - I figured if I could get some measurements/bend points blueprint so to speak, I could have it fabricated by a muffler shop and bolt it on. From there, share it with others. My personal goal is that I just want something different with an aggressive goal in trying to keep it under 500 bucks, if it hits 500 ill give up - ill spend the rest of my spare change on some fuzzy dice and some new valve stem caps.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We did it - no tip solution yet but the turndown pipes look kinda cool IMHO ill post a pic although its not a great one - let me know what you think of the sound. Try to tune out the vibration... I did this on my blackberry, ill try to get another but this time I will put something under it to eliminate some of the vibration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YMhu...ature=youtu.be

Here is a pic, again with blackberry's finest and the car on slightly on an angle but you get the gist of it. https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B66...0xCTmEwTzVXLXc
