There were so many little changes between 99 and 00' that I think it is definatley worth spending a few thousand more to upgrade to an 00 or 01'

This is my first post, and I'm not sure if I've used the right terminology and descriptions of the cars, so please bear with me.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a chance to buy a 1999 C2 6 speed from a friend who just bought a 2006 C2. The car has under 20,000 miles. It has been well kept, garaged, and appears to be in excellent condition.
What are the pros and cons of the 1999 996? What should I look at (and/or have a mechanic look at) before buying the vehicle. Since 1999 was the first year of the 996, are there any problems with the vehicle that I should be aware of? Any suggestions on a price range?
I drove a used 2000 Boxster S (Tip) for a few years, sold it last year, and am really missing having a sports car. I look forward to driving a 6 speed - the Tip was nice, but not IMO, a true driving experience. I am concerned that the Boxster, from the front, is almost identical to the 911. I know the Boxster is lighter and more nimble, and less powerful, but the S (even with the Tip) was plenty quick. Is the 911 worth the significant price premium? And, while they are not in the same league, should I even consider getting a new or late model Honda 2000, RX-8, or 350Z?
Sorry for asking so many questions. This is my first post, and I'm not sure if I've used the right terminology and descriptions of the cars, so please bear with me.
Thanks much.
Hi SMR,
If you search, you will find lots of threads on the same topic.
If you like how it drives and are comfortable with the price, buy it. It can't be simpler than that right?
I also bought mine from my friend and have been very happy with it.
Yep do a search there is lot's of good information on the changes between 99 to 00'. IMHO I would spend the money for an 00' over the 99'.
However I would take a 99' Carerra over a Boxster any day of the week. Different cars. Is your friend going to sell you the car dirt cheap? i.e. below wholesale/auction pricing? If so you should jump on it. If he is asking private party pricing then I would find a newer model. There were so many little changes between 99 and 00' that I think it is definatley worth spending a few thousand more to upgrade to an 00 or 01'
after having a '99 boxster for about 2 years, I just purchased a pre-owned '99 c2- I could not be happier. I did a lot of research and felt very comfortable buying a '99. there are actually some advantages in my mind to the '99 over some later years not the least of which is the depreciation. Service records are a must- I was lucky in the my purchase included an extremely inclusive warrany for 5 more years or 50k miles. The c2 is amazing. I enjoyed my boxster but this is an entirely different vehicle. If you are going to get a good price, have the records, and inspection is clear then go for it. you will not be unhappy.
good luck!
Very happy with my 1999 that I purchased on April 1 of 2004 at 35000 miles. 11, 000 miles later still very happy. 1999 cars will need the updated coolant tank replacement when they break. Mine went last August at about 38K miles. No drips, no runs, no errors.
I will NOT be going back to air cooled. Next stop a used 997.
