My 03 Turbo's 6-speed transmission was replaced under warranty with a new (re-manufactured) transmission with the old/original (and low miles) transmission returned to the factory for rework.

wish i could post a pic - the seller has turned out to be difficult to deal with - refused to let me do a PPI - i nickname people like this "ambassadors of seattle" - grumpy, passive aggressive, has little knowledge of the debate subject and knows it all.

i'm helping find a friend a 1999 996 - found a 99 car w/replacement engine but want to make sure it is a factory replacement and also can anyone tell me if this motor has the IMS upgrades from factory?

Some place on here I think the X on the end means porsche factory rebuild. Then there is porsche records or car fax possibly showing a dealer replaced it. Any idea of where the car lived might get some help if a dealer service department head is good enough to know or look up data. Engines are only available from porsche last I knew. Maybe even porsche USA would look it up. I'd think somebody knows or has records because the engine costs as much as the cars these days.
The engine is a 3.4l engine and from that era. No way Porsche is going to take a more modern engine and redo it to satisfy an older car that needs a 3.4l engine. In some areas of the country the emissions the car has to comply with is based on the engine's year of manufacture so no way the engine's going to be any 'newer' than the last 3.4l engine built.
Thus the engine has whatever inherent weaknesses or shortcomings that is endemic to the 3.4l engine.
Being re-manufactured the engine may have been the 1st one off the line or the last one off the line. As engines come off the engine factory assembly/test line and do not pass muster they are set aside and reworked (re-manufactured) and either put into a car or set aside for replacement stock.
Or the engine was a returned engine -- itself replaced under warranty -- that at the factory was gone through and resurrected though often the engines that are sent back to the factory are not that sick.
My 03 Turbo's 6-speed transmission was replaced under warranty with a new (re-manufactured) transmission with the old/original (and low miles) transmission returned to the factory for rework. The problem? A leaking selector shaft seal. This transmission will come back as a re-manufactured transmission and probably end up in somebody's car.
