I don't know how long its been for sale but probably a while.
Leading evidence: 'while' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'while' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run away' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Might opt out and grab a good running car and do my own exterior upgrades.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

New to the site and 996s- longtime car building and now obsessed with these Porsches. Found this one for sale. Its heavily modified (body wise) and Ive seen plenty of pics of it on the internet. Just trying to find some history. I have it on hold but trying to decide if the money is justifiable or buy a lower priced car and do my own mods. Any thoughts is greatly appreciated.
Not sure of the car's history, but my recommendation would be to do a THOROUGH mechanical PPI. The car clearly looks impressive/beautiful. The danger is that it's a lot of makeup on a pig. Though body kits and paint can be extremely expensive (I didn't even look at the price, but I'd guess mid $20k's), the engine is by far the single most expensive part that's most likely to go BOOM!
I don't know how long its been for sale but probably a while. They are asking 30k. Definitely looks impressive, but like you said, seems like a lot of $$$ for a 1999. Thanks~
Wow, I took a look at all the pictures, and that car is amazing.
With 91K miles, I'd says it is worth $18-20K.
Another $10K for all the bodywork would be on the high end, but likely they spent much
MUCH
more.
If I were looking for a 996 or 997 and had a $30K budget, I'd likely go for it if the engine is in good shape.
If I had a mid to high-30s budget, I'd look for a 996 Turbo.
The engine needs a 997 airbox, or Fabspeed.
Either would look a
LOT
better.

No history or mention of RMS/Clutch/IMS... Im thinking the engine isnt as nice as the outside. Might opt out and grab a good running car and do my own exterior upgrades. Appreciate it!!
That car definitely "looks the part" and is worth 30k if that's what you want. It will fool every one going down the road. It will fool most people at the local "cars and coffee". It will fool many at the local Porsche gathering. It presents its self well as a much newer and 100k+ car, but hard core enthusiasts will notice the difference. That's the main drawback, you will be accused of being a "symposer" by the Porsche Gods.
I remember seeing the build for this car. I think it was here on Rennlist, but I don’t remember who or when. I agree with TexSquirrel’s suggestion to look for a 996 Turbo. That would be an AWESOME intro to Porsche ownership.
Well, I'm far from an expert on modded 996s, but here's a comment or two.
The headlamp conversion is the true 997 fenders, bumper and lamps. This seems like a pretty big deal, including paint to match, or entire car paint job. It appears the rear bumper is also a true C4S/turbo item with the vents(non-functional in this case) where they belong. The light bases, panel joints, and gaps seem to be pretty good in the pictures, hard to say if that holds true in person.
If the interior has the same quality attention to detail, and the car runs and drives and stops right, I could see dropping $30k coin if it tuned my piano. I do like the color, and the trim bits. But - there's a lot of folks like silver and black which I can't stand.
The problem with a GT clone, or an M3 clone, or other hopped up clones is if you are out on the road, and someone chooses to throw down, you are gonna hafta beg off, and swallow the big black crow.
I agree. I think the attention to detail on the outside is impressive. Youd think with all that time and money spent, they wouldve done something to the engine to make it perform as well as it looks. If it were less money, I could bite and build a proper engine. The 30k like others said would likely be better spent on a true turbo car.
Thanks!
Happy to help a small contribution. There is a 'however' involved. When you step up to the turbo, and specifically a low-budget turbo around $30k-ish, you might be buying into another $10-15k in upkeep, maint, and extras. I'm an an unrefined bottom feeding buyer, and I would not go into the turbo market on the cheap. I might(and did) pay $16k for an early 99 C2, but if I were to fishing in turbo waters, my budget would be closer to $50k.

That clone is this cars sister. WOW!! Seeing this, actually turns me off to this car. Obviously been done a few times over. Ive built so many custom cars, its time to do a Porsche my own way. The turbo is nice too!! There is a real GT2 here for sale. They are asking 265k for it. That's slightly higher than I can afford..just slightly...lol!!
The St Louis car, and the car the OP was inquiring are two different cars. Hence my 'clone wars' comment. I don't know if the St Louis car was once offered for a higher price, but when I saw the ad originally I believe it was $26.5k.
