The headlight switch has some issues I was able to repair but it still isn't perfect, turns on lights fine now and fog lights too.

I am thinking of replacing the ignition switch and maybe the headlight switch but it's 100+ bucks.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just bought a 2000 996, it is having some electrical issues that I can't diagnose: The turn signals do not work at all when turning on the signal or flashers. I have checked all of the relays, fuses, bulbs and found nothing. The headlight switch has some issues I was able to repair but it still isn't perfect, turns on lights fine now and fog lights too. The weirdest thing is a slight buzz comes from the gauge cluster when you turn on the headlights on, the cluster lights also stay off, until you turn on the hazard indicators and the gauge cluster lights up. I am thinking of replacing the ignition switch and maybe the headlight switch but it's 100+ bucks. Any clues would be helpful. Thanks, Jon- 2000 911 996

POST 2Original post

A failing ignition switch (the electrical portion) can cause all kinds of gremlins. The first thing Id do is replace that with a new one. Poke around here with the search function - I think there is an identical Audi part that is less costly.

Thanks! I pulled the headlight switch and found the pins discolored from heat and looking burnt, so I replaced it this afternoon and the headlight issue has gone away. Turn signals still don't work, the stalk seems in good shape, working with the high-beams and staying in place when moved. So currently, the turn signals don't work, hazard switch only turns on the gauge lights when the headlights are also on. Otherwise, the gauge lights are always off. When turning on the headlights there is a buzz that comes from the gauge cluster or near it that ceases buzzing when the hazard switch is turned on. Im trying to figure out the turn signal issue.
