Reported cause
Also bought one recently for an airbag light and it turned out to be the front passenger crash sensor.
Leading evidence: 'front passenger crash sensor' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'front passenger crash sensor' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install seat and re-connected the seat belt wire' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Previous owner told me it was the passenger seat belt receptacle, but 5-6 years later the airbag light is still on.

Just installed a new seat and re-connected the seat belt wire before re-connecting the battery and firing up the car.

My airbag light came on after I removed and repaired the seats in my 996 C2 (1999).

Suggestion
I agree I took my car in for its free oil change from the dealer I bought it from and they wanted to charge me $100 to clear the airbag light when the car was already there couldn't believe it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
My airbag light came on after I removed and repaired the seats in my 996 C2 (1999).
Do I need to buy a Durametric for it? Anything else I might need Durametric for? (I do like geeky engineering stuff)
I track it occasionally but use Race Capture Pro for logging and stuff.
Anyone in austin area that has one?

Absolutely told me it was a fault on the drivers seat belt receptacle. The only system in the car it doesn't work on or access is the gauge cluster itself. I wanted to try and unlock the on board computer so it would show the temp but no dice.
Foxwell NT510 is a great scanner at half the price. Also bought one recently for an airbag light and it turned out to be the front passenger crash sensor. It also can read DME over rev report.
I have a professional version Durometric cable.
But I'm in the Houston area.
I'll be in La Grange on Thursday.
Also I might be in the Austin area the week after Christmas.
Recently purchased Duramteic. Wish I had 7 yrs. ago when I purchased my 99. Its just so handy and easy to use. If you plan on keeping your 996 for awhile I highly suggest purchasing...even if you dont plan to keep I would think that you would be able to sell it with the car.
I removed my LWB seats to install a rollbar. Should the Cobb tunning device be able the clear airbag light? I tried it tonight but still getting the light. I’m not sure if there’s a real issue or if the Cobb Accessport doesn’t clear airbag errors.
Thanks.
If you have a '99 C2, the 'enthusiast' version will not clear the airbag code unless they have changed something recently. They won't tell you that until after you purchase it, if then.
I never got my Durametric to help with airbag light on my '99. It worked for other things like rough idle (coils) and high idle (oil filler cap not on correctly). I just can't get it to read the airbag modules. I know many others had problems with model year '99. Previous owner told me it was the passenger seat belt receptacle, but 5-6 years later the airbag light is still on. One day I will resolve it.
Did you talk to Durametric about the issue? Did they blame it on your car? They are b@stards. I had two 99s and had the problem on both and so I stayed after their @sses until they finally sent me an older cable. It has worked perfectly ever sense for the K2 modules (including airbags). They know they have an issue with their newer cables but refuse to acknowledge it unless you force them to. I will be happy to find and forward my email chain with their tech support to anyone that wants to beat them over the head with it.
Wow, I had no idea I still had such a resentment towards them. Might have to do some step work on it. Lol.
bump on this topic. Just installed a new seat and re-connected the seat belt wire before re-connecting the battery and firing up the car. On first start up the airbag light was on as expected. However every start up since, the airbag light is now gone. Will this code magically clear itself sometimes? Thought it odd for the light to magically go away on its own
thought i'd revive this topic instead of starting a new one. was driving earlier to brunch w/the wife and on the way there everything was fine. on the way back i noticed the airbag light had appeared. what's it mean and is it for the driver or passenger side airbag?
Can be a number of things: airbag, airbag control unit or seat belts.
No real way to tell other than scanning the car. It does not clear itself when it comes on
The seatbelts on these cars are notorious for triggering an airbag light. Theres even a Porsche wiring kit that you can buy to update the seatbelt wiring harness in order to fix it. Being a tenacious soul, I was able to rectify mine with some good ol DeOxit spray and a bit of elbow grease on the connectors under the seat.
^^This^^ doesn't surprise me at all... the tip-off is that you were there for a "free oil change"... What else did they try to sell you while you were there? "Free" is just a way to get you in the door, then they hit you with the "up-sell"...
