Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good day all! I am returning to this forum after a long absence. I had several 928's including 2 GT's and a C2 but that was several years ago. I am looking at a 2004 Carrera 4S with about 110,000 miles. Aside form the IMS issue what do i look for in terms of things that will bite my wallet?

POST 2Original post

It's a 14 year old German sports car! Parts are generally expensive and labor is generally in the "ridiculous" range ($150/hr at indy's and $180/hr at the dealer - in my area)... All the better if you can do your own work. Once again, generally speaking everything "bites your wallet" with these things. The best thing you can do is educate yourself so you have an idea of what the priority jobs are and what they'll cost. Add that # to the purchase price of the car to determine whether it's as good a price as it may seem at first glance...Good luck

POST 3Original post

I agree with dporto but there are some really good shops that specialize in Porsches. Their rates are better than a dealer's and their knowledge, if you pick a good shop, is amazing. Find one near you ( see you are in new Jersey. I am too and I found a great shop in Northern NJ. There are also a few great shops in PA) and then have the car inspected to see what it needs. Good Luck and welcome back!

POST 4Original post

Sounds like you have history with the brand, I feel parts for the 996 are reasonable in this world. As a newish owner of a C4s (was just under 100k mi at purchase), I was quite surprised to find out most wear parts are actually cheaper than a similar era BMW 3-Series. I’ve put loads of parts on the car given it came with limited history and find it very easy to work on. The only wear items that I’ve found to be a bit spendy on the C4s are brakes. That’s my next project and am budgeting $1k for parts with me doing all the work. I’d suggest a PPI to get a baseline and have something to help in negotiating a price. Did the same and the reduced purchase price (from asking) paid for a lot of the parts I’ve since purchased. Here’s a link to a thread I included most of the parts I’ve replaced if you want a good idea of what a typical 996 may need at the age/mileage of the car your looking at.

http://theamcforum.com/forum/1970-am...opic42680.html This is a link to my current project car so I guess I would consider myself OK with my hands. It's a 1970 AMX former B Production race car. Doing a complete ground up on it. The owner of the Carrera said it had the IMS replaced at around 75000. It now has 110,000. How do I tell if it need replacement without taking it apart? I heard there is some type of sound that can be picked up by a special tool?

Always loved the quirkiness of the AMX. Looks like the next Porsche will be in great hands. I never heard of a way to tell if an IMS is going bad but some replacements are warranted for 6 years and there's even a permanent Solution. Some, me included, just had it done for peace of mind. Since you are so hands on this would be a job you can do yourself.

POST 7Original post

Loved the AMX. Just read your post on the car on the AM forum. My first car was a VW beetle that I heavily modified and Joe Jill/Speedwin did the heads on the car with small block Chevy valves. What a shop they had! You mention Manhasset; we lived in Garden City until moving down to the Colonial Capitol. And finally, I've just bought this '02 Carrera, but previously had an '89 928S4/5-speed that I restored.

POST 8Original post

I just replaced most of the suspension components on recently acquired C4S with 107000 miles. Coming from BMW worlds, I was floored by how expensive some of the parts are, like LCAs and toe links. I ended up having rear wheel bearings, rear rotors and all pads while in there..... Now I just need to work on HVAC flap that shed foam pieces.

POST 9Original post

Well, you clearly have the chops to do your own work on the car. In my case, this is what makes the car both "affordable" (technically I can "afford" to have someone else do the work, but for the amount I drive it - it would just be silly and wasteful) and enjoyable (I actually like working on it)... The beauty of these things is that they're really well engineered and a pleasure to work on and learn about as you dismantle it and put it back together again.

Which are the great shops in PA? /exthree

POST 11Original post

One is Specialty Cars Service Center in Allentown, PA. These guys are approved by Jake Raby to install the IMS Solution so they must be good if they are Jake approved. Another is Performance Automotive Inc in Malvern, PA. I do not know this shop personally but they have good reviews on line. Picking a shop is difficult because it requires trust between the two parties. And sometimes they have to tell the owner that an expensive repair is needed. So choose wisely and Good Luck. FWIW I use Powertech in Rockaway, NJ. I found them through PCA. They are honest, they really know Porsches, they race Porsches and so far they have done me good. My 16 year old car runs like new. Again, choose wisely and best of luck.

POST 12Original post

Here is a snapshot of my expenses for the last little over 2 years. She really enjoys the wallet. I bought the car to drive it and had mentally prepared myself for all the issues to come. Someone had posted in another form that a car this old is either broken or about to be broken and it's the truth. I still need to do plugs and tran flush very soon. I'm sure that most peoples list that try to keep their car in good shape would be very similar minus of oil brand possibly. Try to find one with IMS and suspension work complete. Those things are a drag.

POST 13Original post

And if her brokenness bums you out ever... get er' detailed. Always puts a smile on my face even with a messy garage and cracked driveway!
