Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'fluid' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fluid' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fluid level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My beloved '99 996 w/ 94K miles has developed a strange transmission noise within the last 10K miles. When pulling away in 1st gear (only), its a 6 speed Getrag unit, there's a definite "noise" coming from the tranny. Its not real loud, but as an owner of long standing, I can definitely hear it. Let me describe it: its not a classical gear whine sound, its more of a "worn bearing" sound. Its almost inaudible when the tranny is cold. But as soon as its slightly warmed, its back! (Its totally quiet in 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6th gear, and otherwise the tranny seems fine.)
Have any Rennlisters experienced the same noise? Any ideas? (The possibility of a major, say expensive, gear box re-build has me loosing sleep.)

Maybe post a audio/video of the sound while driving through the gears? Would help with opinion/diagnosis.. I hate to be a "Debbie downer" but first thing that comes to mind with a "first gear only" noise is a chipped tooth on the first gear.
The usual common problem with the g96 pinion bearing is most noticeable in 3rd-4th gears because they are closest to the pinion bearing and exert the most pressure on the pinion bearing..
If you get a whining noise when you are on the accelerator and it stops when coasting its a pinion bearing I am pretty sure....that was my symptom before I had it rebuilt.
Have you checked fluid level? When was fluid last changed? In the fall, I dropped the fluid in my new to me 45000 mile 2003. I was surprised by how clean it looked when it came out until I compared it to the new replacement fluid which was a lot cleaner looking.
To be honest, doubt your issue is the fluid. Cheapest and easiest thing to check.
When I read your post, and you say it is isolated to 1st gear, my mind went to chipped tooth or gear wear. There isnt much that is 1st gear specific and isolated inside the case. If it were in all gears Id lean toward the pinion bearing. To be fair, Ive only had one of these gear boxes apart, so I am not terribly experienced.
From my understanding if your pinion bearing is failing then 3rd gear has the most whining. How are the syncro's? is it hard to shift until it warms up?
