But at $500/ea on the 996 I'm questioning whether or not just repacking them and replacing the boots is prudent.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What's the conventional wisdom on replacing the front CV boots vs replacing the entire axle assembly? With other vehicles, I have generally replaced the entire axle as it's fairly cost-effective. But at $500/ea on the 996 I'm questioning whether or not just repacking them and replacing the boots is prudent. The car is coming up on approximately 80k miles on the original parts. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Personally I *always* put new boots on after cleaning and regressing. The reason being driveshafts are very precise things with special hard metals, in most cases aftermarket versions are inferior in quality. They won't balance as well or last as long etc So that's my recommendation or remove them completely and go 2WD..

POST 3Original post

If the ***** and races are in good condition, then there isnt really a downside to repacking and replacing the boots, assuming you have the skill to do the job. It is very messy and requires one special tool (oetiker clamp crimpers).
