Seller felt bad since he was representing it as something else (i dug and dug, discovered that where he thought the motor was rebuilt turned out to be just an estimate, not a receipt!).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, Looking for a 996 to daily drive/commute in. I live in Sonoma,CA and work in Oakland. Drive is about 60mi each way, but I work 24hr shifts, so I commute 10 days per month. Commute consists of 2 lane backroads and some freeway. I have a few questions for the collective wisdom here; Roads here in the SFBay Area are crap at best. Potholes abound! I'm thinking of keeping my wheel size as small as possible, with as much tire between me and the road. I would love to get something like the Sparco/Braid 'gravel rally' style wheel in 16 or 17" (at the largest). I'm "building" this car to be a comfortable backroad cruiser, and everyday driver/commuter. Car will not be tracked, and I intend to pile the miles on. Got a recommended tire/wheel size? What suspension setup would be as plush as possible? Stock? The last thing I want to do is lower it...Looking for a setup to soak up the bumps! The road up to my neighborhood is full of bumps and jumps. I bottomed out my old VW tdi once while charging up the hill... Sniffing around on a couple leads...Car needs to be NOT black or red, with a 6spd. Interior needs to be black, or mostly black...looking at one with a replacement motor, but high mileage chassis. Seems to be pretty well taken care of. Going to get a PPI next week. I like the targas as well, but I'm worried about the potential for rattles...that kinda thing keeps me up at night... anyway-thanks in advance! cool, seth sonoma,ca

POST 2Original post

Avoid one with the sport suspension package (M030 code in particular). My 99 has it with Euro GT3 seats (very thin padding). It also has Bilstein B8 shocks. There is one particularly bad piece of country road near me in South Carolina. When I drive it, I put my tongue between my teeth to keep them from banging together. On smooth roads it's great though.

update- I've got a PPI scheduled for May 2nd at Redline Service in LA on a car. Hoping it checks out! cool, seth

POST 4Original post

Hello Neighbor, I am in the Sacramento area, drive thru your area quite a bit on the way to Sea Ranch, I have a 04 C2 all stock, put 18 in, wheels on it and 15mm spacers, love the spacing but not the ride height, I went with B&G lowering springs, but they are progressive springs, kept the stock shocks.... the difference in ride was very noticeable by even my better half. I was expecting the ride to be a little harsher, LOL we had a wedding to go to last weekend in Carmel, she let me take the P-car instead of the Benz. that has never happen before. the progressive springs made a big difference in ride. tires are 225/40 in front and 285/30 in the rear, they work fine in your commute, we have 3 boy's that live in San Fran. and one has a 02 C2 with same set-up and no problems.

POST 5Original post

I have a stock base model. The suspension is very compliant. I also have 18 stock wheels and Michelin AS3+ tires.

POST 6Original post

@sethro: If anything changes with the PPI, we have a Gold Meister Porsche tech near SF who could travel out to the car for a full inspection. Let me know if we can help. Thanks!

POST 7Original post

You definitely want to keep the stock wheel size (18") if ride compliance is a concern - mine came with aftermarket 19's and coilovers, and the combination was BRUTAL. 18's helped a lot. Raising the suspension half an inch helped even more. I also had issues with PSM being much more twitchy with the 19's. It's much less intrusive now.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well, both 996s i was looking at fell through. One had zero records, and some hidden rust-no thanks! The other has high mileage chassis, low mileage rebuilt motor due to IMS failure. Problem is-no records whatsoever! Unknown rebuilder, no IMS bearing upgrade. Seller felt bad since he was representing it as something else (i dug and dug, discovered that where he thought the motor was rebuilt turned out to be just an estimate, not a receipt!). Damn. So, the search continues...sigh.. seth sonoma,ca

POST 12Original post

@sethro: Too bad - I know of another MY 2000 for sale near Monterey that looks like a nice example. 52k miles, 6-speed, and nicely optioned. Also, to answer your question - by SF I meant San Francisco! We have a tech in the Bay and a tech near Monterey to cover the whole region.
