I can rest easier now, or I can once I get that rear bolt on the intake plenum tightened :-)

There is a little plastic holder that the two wire plug sits in when not in use, bit don't worry about it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My '99 Carrera convertible developed a coolant leak from the water pump bearing. I decided to replace the AOS while "I was in there" and have found a couple of things that don't seem to be connected. First off, there is a 2 conductor electrical connector that I don't recall disconnecting. The wire joins the wiring harness on the left side of the engine just to the outside of the dome shaped vacuum tank. I've included 2 photos of the connector. My apologies for the quality. 2 conductor connector I don't remember disconnecting. A little blurry, but you can see the green color inside. Any hints as to where I should look for a place to plug this in? Secondly, the "Y" connector in the vacuum circuit has 1 end plugged. It looks like someone purposely put this plug in place. 2 legs are connected... This look like it was on purpose. Has anyone seen anything like this? From the parts drawings I can't determine where the missing line would go to. The car was running great with no CEL etc. Can/should I leave one or both of these as they are? I'd really hate to put it all back together only to have a problem and have to take the intake and alternator out again. Thanks in advance! --Q

POST 2Original post

The tiptronic transmissions require an additional vacuum and electrical connection that manual transmissions do not. I discovered this when I recently pulled my motor and found it wasnt original to the car and must have come from a tip model. It was the same thing - 1 plugged vacuum line and a 2 wire plug that wasnt connected to anything. Is your car a manual? Your situation may be similar to mine in that it is a non-original motor from a tip.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I should have mentioned that the car has a manual transmission and 77,000 miles on the odometer. I’m the third owner and I have all the service records from the second owner dating back to 2002 when the car had 19,410 miles on it. There is nothing in the records about an engine change. Is there a way to check if the engine is original to the car?

POST 4Original post

The engines are made for dual purpose so are forensen with all lines and wiring for manual or Tiptronic transmission hence some of it will be terminated depending on the use? The tiptronics have fot example an air bypass in order to attenuate idle fluctuations. When converting the tip to a manual some lines got a cap.

POST 5Original post

IIRC from when had my engine out, I believe th e electrical connector goes to a knock sensor (circled in yellow in photo)

This is 100% the answer. That stuff is there for when the motor is being used in a tiptronic. There is a little plastic holder that the two wire plug sits in when not in use, bit don't worry about it.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

DBJoe: Thanks so much for the pictures and drawings. I will be using this to verify everything when I put it back together. I do notice that one leg of the "Y" connector near the vacuum tank isn't labeled as connected. I'm relieved to see that and that my car is as it should be. Thanks again!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Kris: Murphy: Thanks for the confirmation. 100% of Renlisters agree that these things are for the tiptronic. I can rest easier now, or I can once I get that rear bolt on the intake plenum tightened :-)
