A couple weeks after I installed my wevo's, this c63 came out off nowhere on the hwy off ramp, left turn.

Problem with brake checking a sports car is that 1) I wasn't really following that close 2) I can stop better and faster 3) I was left wondering why traffic was backed up and didn't even know it was a check until a while later, so whatever effect he wanted it to have didn't really work anyway.

Well, I really don't want to kill my dad though he can hold his own as he grew up racing and though he will not admit it, my uncle said he ran a little shine when he was young.

So took the car out for errands and a secret beer run (wife was home cleaning). Lately I've noticed that, while I'm driving at a normal speed, other drivers would zoom past me in some misguided attempt to affirm that they are faster (superior?) to the 996. For instance, I passed a Ford Probe, full size pickup, and a Prius today at normal speeds only to have them sharply accelerate past me to reassert their dominance. Anyone else experience this phenomenon? I'm well past my engine revving, quick off the line days so in no way do I instigate any of this. So what other cars are "faster" than your 996?
Nobody seems to want to race me in "Hans", in 996 people were more playful. Two reasons for this I suspect. Those not in the know, see a black benz and pay no attention to quad pipes and V8 KOMPRESSOR badges. Those in the know, see the quad pipes and V8 KOMPRESSOR badges and don't bother trying.
The sleeper status of "Hans" is phenomenal. Regular people don't suspect that this is a high 11 second car in stock form.
Those in the know most likely assume an old guy is driving it and then when they see you, assume it's your dad's vehicle so they don't think you'll race them in fear of getting grounded.
Sadly not a "Porsche" story, but similar behavior.
Many moons ago I had a Toyota Supra Turbo. In red, with the big spoiler on the back.
I was stopped at a red light one day with the targa top off and this "kid" in a Mustang rolled up next to me. He revved and when the light turned green he gunned it. I just ignored him and drove along.
At the next light, sure enough there he was again and I rolled up along side. He starts revving again and I just rolled my eyes. The light turned green and he guns it again...as does the car on my OTHER side...and absolutely dusts the Mustang.
The car? A Volvo Turbo wagon. I caught the kid a couple of blocks later and just smiled and waved. :-)
I get this in my Corvette, and I got it in the 986. I think the 996 aero with tinted windows and Fisters (previously Tubi's) must be more intimidating - in nearly 3 years, not a single "wanna roll?"
I don't even get ricer fly-by's in the 996.
This is kind of funny, because of the two cars, the Corvette is the "sleeper" - from a dig or a roll, it will beat most stuff up to 400HP up past 100, while the 996 is pretty much bone-stock mechanically.
I get that a lot out here in LA. Cars have plenty of room to merge in behind me but they always push harder to get ahead of me and cut me off. When at a stoplight lineup, no one challenges me. Once we take off i guess they see me accelerate lazily and they always gas it to get ahead. Its some kind of automatic perception. I find myself doing the same thing to trucks, but that is because I can't see around them and would rather they be behind me. Just par for the course I guess.
I had a kid in a Honda Civic want to race me at a red light. I played along with him and he few off when the light changed, I slowly accelerated away. The road had a curve to it and as I rounded the curve 10 seconds after the Civic, I saw him being pulled over by a cop.
As I passed him I looked over, smiled and waved. You could almost see the steam coming out of his ears.
I noticed I drive slower in my Porsche's than in other cars. I guess because I can, I don't have to.
Besides I can always take it to the track and go ***** to the wall
I've gotten a few baits several times in the last year of ownership and I must admit that while I resist the urge to beat the crap out of my car, a couple times I've taken the bait and luckily I put them in their place. But, I can see a lot of cars that could beat the crap out of my 996 in a heart beat.
What really annoyed me once though was I was driving normally minding my own business and this stupid Corolla literally just cut me off and started to drive slow. I couldn't take it anymore, I had to teach him a lesson. A dam Corolla!
Had a few guys in this rice burner small civic or something want to race at a light. It was all in good fun and a pretty normal 1st to 3rd beat them. I was only going up to 30 anyway.
Got a kick out of my friend when we were talking about oil "well you aren't hard on the car" yeah, these things can do quite a bit and I'm not even close to the limit.
Ha ha ha ... that is funny. I notice that when I drive my black Mercedes E350, I'm totally ignored. No so when I'm driving my C4S. I had a young woman in a Neon trying to race me when the light turned green. I was heading home from the beach and so I was in a mellow mood. Had to shake my head. Today, a clown in a Ford F150 diesel tried to prevent me passing him.
I don't get it.
The most consistant gotta be in front vehicle I see for the past couple years is a Mazda 3, drivers age doesn't matter. If it's a Mazdaspeed 3, I would bet money they show it off some how.
I do miss my "ricer" Tiburon. It was fun when other people who know Tibs are fairly gutless would give me the "wow, is that thing fast" line - and later realize it was far from stock. My wife misses the car as well - she walked kids on several occasions. She has more of a speed problem than I do...
That car was DEFINITELY faster than my 996 - but from a dig, the torque steer was a wristbreaker...
Intercooled. Supercharged. Stickers. What else do you need?
There is a guy around here with an older F-250 Diesel, I know he is running propane as I can see the tank in his bed and by the sweet smell I think he has nitrous as well. I am guessing he is running around 500+ hp. I was behind him at a light and next to him was a 370z and both were revving their engines. When the light turned green the F-250 smoked him off the line in a cloud of smoke. I unfortunately had my top down and had to breath that crap.
Catching my breath I caught up to the Z, looked over at him and gave him the No No wave with my finger then we both laughed.
Yeah, that's one trick the diesel guys love - to smoke out the poor bastard in the next car over with the top or windows down. Never happened to me, but I have rolled my windows up once or twice because I thought it might...
Haha great story.
Yea, this "faster than a 996" thing happens to me too. Could be any kind of car - minivan to F150 to rice burner. Seems to be younger guys more often than not, got something to prove I guess.
But I think it could be a "faster than a Porsche sports car" phenomenon, as it seemed to happen even more often in the Boxster. Not sure if it was the color (black), or maybe some people are just a bit more intimidated by a 996 than a 986.
I get the usual people that feel the need to run up on my *** between lights and on the highway. I guess they are trying to prove a point or take out their car frustrations on me.
I could care less, time in my car is all about me. The world could be collapsing and I could care less. Life is too short not to enjoy these cars.
In the gta this is all too common. Seems everyone in their ****box has to pass the nice car. Happened to me in my Vette all the time and now the 911. I can be doing 20 or even 30 over and some guy in a rusted to **** Honda Civic has to pass me. Not that I care I find it comical but it doesn't go unnoticed.
Frankly, I RARELY have anyone try to race me on the street. Maybe a ricer one or twice a year, that's about it.
Also, there are a TON of sleeper cars out there, so you never know what you are up against.
1,000 HP SmartForTwo anyone?
^ Yup. It's fun being the person with the sleeper. The guy who calls the sleeper out, not so much, so I just mind my own bidness.
You could take that 1,000HP Smart, add claws and fangs, and make it shoot fire on demand in any direction...and it's still a Smart Fortwo. Maybe the baddest damn Smart Fortwo ever, but...
There's a guy who used to run his SRT Neon at RaceLegal - he had a HUGE snail on that thing, and loads of other mods - but at the end of the day, it was still a yellow Neon.
I saw the same mindset when I had my modded Tiburon - it was TREMENDOUS fun to make a slow car fast, but then you do the math and realize how much money has been burned. I knew a couple of guys who ticked past the $50K mark - race motors, twin turbos, stuff you can't even imagine stuffing into a Tiburon - and realized that if I spent that kind of money, I didn't want to still wind up with a Hyundai in the garage.
You guys all have it wrong and are not understanding the situation.
Your in a sports car and Racing is in the foundation of our truly amazing cars.
Every time someone accelerates and passes us our instant reaction is, it's a race! Understandably so..... But the reality is quite different.
They are just admiring the car and want to see the front view.
My LR2 sports the following bumper sticker:
Yes, I own a gun
Yes, I know how to use it
Yes, I will shoot you
I'm rarely cut off in traffic, and nobody has ever flipped me off, nor pulled alongside with verbal abuse.
Strange.
Perhaps a duplicate for the 996 merits consideration.
This is so funny, I was just talking to my sister about this… Feeling like everyones car is faster than mine as I'd noticed at red lights it seemed off the line i needed to push the car a bit to keep up with others taking off at green lights. Never an issue when in the SUV… ha ha, nuts….
Happens nearly every day with me. I just had a newer Dodge Challenger play this game with me. I had cruise set about 5 over and passed him. About 1 minute later he goes flying by me. About 3 minutes later I go back by him, cruise still set 5 over. I hope he had fun.
In the first year I had my STi, I was driving home from work around 2am and this civic pulls next to me on the freeway. He played the revving game until he found I had no interest in felony street racing. He then proceeds to drop a gear, mash the throttle and have one of the slowest acceleration events I have ever witnessed. As he grabs his next gear, a huge plume of smoke comes bellowing out from behind his car and he starts slowing and moving to the right. I roll down my window to give a thumbs up and hear a god awful noise coming from that poor motor. I gave the thumbs up and hit my flashers to signal my win as I continued on my way.
I've always wanted to build a VW bus like this one. Left the factory with about 30 hp? Now with a 993 turbo engine, runs about 500 hp. Video link below showing this thing tearing up the track
1963 vw t1 bus with 993 tt engine and 996 drivetrain - YouTube
When driving my 996 (and now my 997) on the highway, I occasionally encounter a situation like this:
- I'm driving in the middle lane, within 5 mph of the speed limit
- I am closing on a car ahead that is obviously traveling less than the posted limit
- I signal and move into the left lane to pass the slower vehicle
- As I start to pass the slow vehicle, the driver accelerates to stay ahead of me so that I can't pass
- I've seen cars (of all types) accelerate to over 80 mph to prevent me from passing
- I eventually pass on the left, and the driver quickly slows down to the speed that they were traveling before I passed
The whole thing is silly.
His happened to me last night as a 350Z that was very low, with ugly wide wheels, and an obnoxious exhaust pulled even with me on the highway (70MPH) and then gunned it. I'm sure I'm in the racing section of some teeny bopper 350Z forum listed as a "kill." I was just out enjoying a spin.
This happens all the time. I-540 is 70mph, I normally set the cruise at 76mph as the troopers and police want people doing at least 9mph over and in NC 80mph is considered reckless driving. I pretty much stay in the center lane and I will run up behind someone and move over to the left lane to pass and sure enough they start speeding up.
Yeah, this happens quite a bit in the 1998 Boxster, mine is Artic Silver and very plain looking and people want to challenge it all the time. In the 996 it is a different story, I am not sure if it is because the aero kit looks intimidating or the fact it is a 911 but it gets a lot more respect at the light. There are quite a few turbos around here so maybe they have been burned too many times and have given up on racing Porches.
Few weeks ago, we were driving in the mountains on a nice twisty road. A full size van was racing me even though I was completely ignoring him. I was doing the speed limit and the van would pass me on the straights. But at the bends/turns, I kept going and he would brake crazy and I could see his van understeer. I thought he might roll over. Eventually, he decided to leave me alone and I kept enjoying my drive. LOL.
I see a lot of Subaru/Audi/BMW and for some reason pickup truck drivers wanting to race me. I am the one usually on the right lane doing 3-4 miles above speed limit minding my own business.
That happened to me once on a small parkway here posted at 25, and I was going about that. Someone in a bigger Chevy SUV (it wasn't anything special) tailgated me then gunned it and pull out in the other lane to pass.
I "should" have dropped it in 2nd, but 3rd was enough to match him up to 60, at which point I thought better of the deal and backed off. He had it floored, and I don't think I did. Which is part of the point that there is no point.
It is fun and games, but we are able to beat almost all stock regular cars, and although it's fun and games there just isn't a point and nothing to prove. Plus the cars that we can't beat it really would be a friendly wave and fun and games, and still no point.
=)
I am glad this thread is here, need to vent. WTF is wrong with people? Just yesterday I had a 90s Ford Ranger with literally no exhaust pull up next to me just to rev his engine. whats it like 130hp? Another guy at work with a beat civic with a type R engine says "wanna race?" I just smile and say sure jokingly. Then he says he's serious. First of all who the hell street races? Bring that shine box to an auto cross and see how that works out for you bud. /rant
I did that to a suburban that was tailgating me, or well, they did it to themselves. Left the tunnel (where one of those corners are) with them way out of sight. Low and behold they were back at it again tailgating me a mile or so later going down the same exit as me. I thought it was a great idea to brake check them a little, and it was a great idea, and he does it to me after going around somehow (I forgot how but the exit opens up at that point) and returns the favor.
Problem with brake checking a sports car is that 1) I wasn't really following that close 2) I can stop better and faster 3) I was left wondering why traffic was backed up and didn't even know it was a check until a while later, so whatever effect he wanted it to have didn't really work anyway.
I broke off going a different way just to cool down.
But yeah, moral of the story is it is A LOT of fun to get in front of fast drivers and lead them into corners, because they WILL follow and won't have any idea of what is happening until its' almost too late. Also, if anything did happen it's their fault anyway.
not live with being passed by me....sigh...whatever dude...first he's dong 40...and then he needs to do about 65 (in a 50 zone) to pass me....driving this brand really is an interesting exercise in how people react...never mind the po po who lit me up when I banged a couple of gears....he was going the other direction and he still lit me up..I pulled over played nice..he kinda chuckled and said if he had my car he would be banging a couple of gears too....
A few years back me and friend took a drive early Saturday morning up Kanan Dr. in Malibu in his e39 M5. On the way back I was driving and suddenly an Mitsubishi Evo is on my tail on the twisties. I start driving a little more aggressively but the foocker was on my tail with his all wheel drive. Soon as we hit the 101 its completely empty and he comes next to me and we just went at. I just couldn't pull away from him, just kept coming until about 120mph so I just let off the gas. We slow down to about 50 and do it again but this time he freaken took off on me like I was standing still. It was so darn modified It felt like a rocket passing me.
Moral of the story....don't under estimate the ricers LOL
996's arent the best street racers from light to light. These cars are quick, but not fast. There are plenty of vehicles riding around that will hand a Carrera its *** from a dig. Even a stock Turbo is no drag racer.
I've owned well prepared Turbo II RX7s that would absolutely annihilate most 996's. I dont think thats what these cars are about though. To me a 911 is about total driving experience thats matched by none!
I was talking to my 81 year old dad this morning, he bought a Hyundai Genesis with 348 hp and is talking smack to me, "When are you coming down to Tampa so we can race?". Then Chiamac's post came to mind and I said, come up to NC, I know a few places in the country we can race. There a lot of 20 and 30 mph twisties. Well, I really don't want to kill my dad though he can hold his own as he grew up racing and though he will not admit it, my uncle said he ran a little shine when he was young.
They might win in a drag race but they never want to race me in the twistys...I ask if they have 1 k to race...then I would do it.....never had a taker yet. I love the moms in mini vans that try.....fun stuff
You're right. The same is true for 997s. My 997 TT will do zero to sixty in under four seconds under the right circumstances, but I'm not going to subject the car to that kind of abuse to prove a point.
If I have a chance to open the car up from 30 mph in second gear, then I can't imagine that there's much that can compete aside from exotics.
Overall, I try to avoid street racing. It's just too dangerous.
I don't understand why you guys have such trouble getting down the road without people bothering you.
No issues whatsoever with people wanting to race, revving, driving like idiots (more so than normal anyway) etc. in either 911.
There's probably a lot of ex ricer's here that won't admit it. I had a 2003 Evo, but don't even put this car in the civic class. Wife made me sell it, 345hp at the wheels, AMS Chicago.
In milwaukee we used to drag up at Park Place and the cops stayed away. Good times...long gone. But it's rare I get someone challenging me and if I do it's a GTR.
I got no problem admitting it. My fastest rice burner was a Suzuki GS1000. We used to set up a 1/4 mile drag strip on the highway just outside of town at about 2:00AM. Some very fast bikes always showed up like the KZ900, CBR1000, 1100 Yamaha, 750 Suzuki with 2 stroke engine. Yea, lots of good time - long gone but great memories.
I'd stay away from those GTR's, they are scary fast!
I don't know if I was ever a "ricer" but I have owned many very fast RX7s. No stickers or led lights, just big turbos and and a lot of bloody knuckles.
Or it could be that we're all a bunch of conceited pompous fools and nobody driving by really gives a rip what we're driving... they're just busy focusing on their phones and not paying attention to their speeds as they speed up and slow down.
I was a ricer back in the day I drove a high 11 second Eagle Talon Tsi AWD. It was a 2g car big turbo big boost all custom intercooler etc... lots of stuff done to it fast as hell. That car was a lot of fun I learned a ton and have applied what I have learned to many other things now. I roll around on a turbo snowmobile at 260 hp that's a riot
The Valkyrie was magnificent. I have a fragment of the aluminum honeycomb structure framed in my office, that someone dug out of the smoking hole it left in the Mohave Desert after Walker's chase F104 flipped into its vortices and sheared the stabilizers off. The other one, I think is at Wright-PatAFB in Ohio.
I've had the chance a few times to fly along the margin of Edwards AFB, and just gaze at it. A lot of aviation history happened on that flat dry patch of desert in the 50's and 60's.
Now,
there
walked some real men.
I was never a ricer growing up but we had 6 '71 and '72 Ford Pinto's we raced at Suffolk Speedway in Va. 1600cc engines that would turn 14.9's in the 1/4 all day long. I used to drive one on the street, idling it sounded like a POS but hit the gas and it was gone. I couldn't tell you how many V8s I embarrassed back in the day. And yes, all the gas tanks were protected for the rear end collision.
All your problems can be solved with new RSS engine mounts. Function first are great as well. They maybe faster but when you see the difference new engine mounts make you won't care!
Closest thing I had to a race was making turbo noises with a modified turbo Hyundai with the 996TT. 996C2 never sparked anyones' interest and surprisingly, neither did the 996LS1.
White out
We want to see pics and details of your M coupe. I have been looking at M coupes and e30 M3's on and off for the last few months. The prices of the e30's are ridiculous. Just waiting for the right deal/car
I was just thinking yesterday how no one has really bothered me in the 996 and then on my way home I got to play with a CTS-V. We were both turning on the same country road and he turned right in front of me. Hit Cadi had BBS LM's and was lowered a little bit with some LOUD exhaust at wide open throttle. He immediately took off and I followed. Wasn't really a race, more just two cars playing. fun little jaunt.
They are fun little cars.

That is one of the best looking M's after the e30 m3. I responded to your PM before I saw pics of your car. Now I really want one. Specially in Red or Le mans Blue.
I love wagons, and that car is scary. I'm not a big fan of caddy styling but it is a beast.
Now if I could just convince BMW to make an M3 wagon, or Mercedes to import the C63 AMG wagon to the U.S. ...
Now here's my secret formula for stopping all the silliness. At the stop light, while the other driver is giving you the evil race eye and revving his engine, just pull forward a little so he can see your rear end. Then hit the button to raise your rear spoiler. Then put your window down and holler "Turbo up". Trust me it works every time they see that spoiler go up it intimidates the crap out of anyone. Then just take off nice and slow and I bet they will not race you, lol. I've done it several times and it scares everyone away. It's just something physiological about seeing that spoiler go up on my C4S.

...come to think of it, I sorta like that idea. Might try it myself!
This thread is great. Thanks for all the entertainment!
As a long time Porsche lover, I finally purchased my first a couple of weeks ago. 2000 996 c2. Love the way this car drives...the handling, torque, just the overall experience.
Haven't had anyone try to race me...I'm too old for that crap anyway..lol
I did have a great experience yesterday though...driving home with my kid and traffic was just moving SLOW! No reason, no accident, no construction...just one of those days where people don't seems to be moving. Anyway, I switch lanes between cars, and an Aston Martin vantage slides over from the other lane right behind me. We then proceed to slide through traffic like its nothing. Not racing, just 2 nice cars having some mutual fun
This is so true. A couple weeks after I installed my wevo's, this c63 came out off nowhere on the hwy off ramp, left turn. I didn't bang a gear, just started gassing it 100, 110, 120, 130 and the merc was getting far behind. When on the street he passed, looked at me and gave me thumbs up. I had no car for a straight way, however cornering ....
Came across a guy with a beautiful M3 Convertible with his extremely hot girl next to him. He was up ahead of me driving like he was king of the road, cutting through traffic trying to race people to impress his girl. The two cars in front of me turned off so I was able to pull up beside him at a traffic light. I slightly revved my gundo hacked exhaust once when I came to a stop. Out of the corner of my eye I could see his girl looking over, the light turned green and I gave it a little gas, nothing really heavy and watched through my rear view as he slowly pulled off the light. Right before we got to the next traffic light he pulled in behind me and stayed there for a mile or so before I turned off the road we were on. I wonder if my aero-kit made him think I had a turbo?
Interestingly, everyone seems to be very courteous and even let me "cut in" in front of them when I'm driving the Guards Red Boxster S. But in the 911, people go out of their way to block me or drive near me like a#$#h and try to challenge me to race, etc. etc. This makes very interesting social experiments...
+1 all the time. Not sure why people are so offended by being passed. I mean I get it if you do it in a jerk off way, but a clean 5mph over signal to the passing lane and back, why do they feel the need to speed up? I get passed by minivans and could care less.
Worst is I've had idiots speed up mid pass so I moved back in behind them and then they slowed down again WTF? I must admit, the last guy who did I blew past the second time to put some distance between us, sorry I don't want to be around someone like that.
The 996 seems to infuriate F150 and minivan drivers.
The GT3 gets the attention of every ricer and Mustang in the area. I let them blow by me, smiling as they no doubt think "I owned him..." yeah, sure pal, now give the car back to your sister.
I have a minivan that consistently pops up during my AM drive to work, when tries to pass me on the wraparound bend up and over an ICW bridge.
Yes, I've also done the "lead them into a turn at a speed they cannot possibly manage" and then watch the rear view to see if they come out of the turn on their side.
Newer owner here. People hate, hate, HATE to be passed by a 911 on the highway and will go to almost any length to block you. I really think it's a subconscious effort for 90% of drivers.
Absolutely. Being in the Houston area, it's the doofuses in their RAMs that try and mingle and they always lose. Minivans are also notoriously a-hole-ish for this type of behavior, no idea why. But yeah, it's a thing about being 'slower' than a car that's clearly faster than you, which makes no sense. I unfortunately am still a 13 year old at heart and entertain most all challenges when they arrive, no matter where lol. Except when the wife is in the car, as she doesn't like it too much... it is fun too as others have said, to go around bends or corners that literally most nothing else besides a 911 can handle and blow by them that way, as we don't have 'the' fastest car in a straight line anyway.
I've never had anyone try to race me in my 996 but I don't drive it a lot. In the mountains around here there are a lot of passing lanes and you get the morons site seeing and going 50MPH until they hit the passing lane and then literally accelerate to 80 until they hit the end of the passing lane. Very infuriating.
In all the years I've owned this hot rod I had only one guy challenge me. It was a Mustang (go figure!
). He rev'd me and I was in a mood so I just did a line locked smokey burn out to heat up the tires real good. That in itself was probably enough to intimidate him but when the light turned green I did a short hop blast to about 30MPH and then backed off. He went flying by full throttle and turned off at the next corner. Most people just give me a thumbs up.
Minivans and Toyota Prius are the top two offenders in my area. Minivans for wanting to show me they can drive fast too. Toyota Prius drivers for being the most passive aggressive and angry drivers out there. Out of my 3 cars there is no doubt I drive the 996 the slowest in general, except when the conditions are ideal (wide open with no cars around) then I really open it up.
