Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 03 C2, fully stock with tiptronic. There's another thread that says not to cruise at 2200-2400 RPM because that's where the variocam is doing it's thing. So I've been avoiding that range all week (400 miles). What I've noticed is that there seems to be a "bump, or surge" of power at about 3200 and again at 3600 RPM. With the tip, it's very difficult driving in traffic to avoid that RPM range, and not get pulled over by the local cops, so I'm trying to make sure all this is worth the hassle. So is this true? Do I really need to avoid 2200-2400? What is happening at 3200 and 3600? Anyone know? Hoping the guys from Flat6 Innovations will chime in with an answer...

POST 2Original post

I can't help you, but I too read that thread and started watching my RPMs just for chuckles. Not sure if it's the roads around here, the speed limits or WHAT, but dammit if I find myself between 2200 - 2400 a LOT, either in second or third gear.

POST 4Original post

On the 3.6, VC kicks in at 3200ish if I'm not mistaken.

POST 5Original post

Just drive normally and let the Tiptronic do its thing. If it were truly bad, you'd see a higher rate of problems flagged for Tips than for manuals. I haven't seen that at all.

I thought the variocam was doing it's thing at 2200-2400? If 3200 is variocam, and 3600 is the MAF flap, then why on earth are we supposed to avoid 2200-2400? (3.6 engine)

POST 7Original post

I think that "cruising" at say, 2500 to 3000 rpm is not bsd its accelerating hard from there that is bad...light throttle isn't hurting anything.....or am I wrong..

POST 8Original post

Agree with dak. Down here almost all our roads are straight and flat. Cruising at 2500+ seems to be no problem. Like dak said, it is accelerating from those low rpms that is probably troublesome.

According to Jake, the IMSB is not lubricated at 2200rpm which is why its a no no. 3150rpm is where the variocam kicks in.

Don't worry about it. It's the earlier 5 chain engines that have the variocam F1 that turns on and off like a light switch. We've seen cars with 100k miles on the variocam wear pads that look like new and some that are destroyed in less than 30k. All has to do with OCI and driving habits on the 5-chain engines.

So for us with the 996.2 stock engines, just drive it and keep the OCI's low and enjoy? Thanks for the input Charles!

Yup. 6 months or 5,000 miles, preferably a 5w40 over a 0w40. Do used oil analysis at every oil change to monitor the condition of the engine and how the oil is performing.
