The ECU stores data that it "learns" over time that makes the engine run properly and can get erased when the battery is disconnected.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car has a battery drain that I've been hunting since day 1. Every time I pull it into the garage I disconnect the negative on the battery. Is there some sort of remote kit that will enable me to do this from inside the car?

POST 2Original post

You can install a battery disconnect switch but really you should find the cause of the drain. The ECU stores data that it "learns" over time that makes the engine run properly and can get erased when the battery is disconnected.

POST 3Original post

I installed a kill switch on the negative terminal. If I am going to let it sit for more than 3 days, I open the switch.

My advice: 1. Don't get in the habit of disconnecting the battery. Instead, until you find out the reason behind the parasitic battery drain, put the car on a trickle charger. 2. Just in case you experience a dead battery and get locked out of the car and frunk, locate the emergency manual release cable. There are several videos on YouTube to help you locate it. There if one for the frunk and engine compartment.

This is good to know. What data does it store that could be harmful to the car? Which switch did you install? Where is it located? Oh I've had to use that manual release many times. I also used to use a trickle charger. I found hte only for sure way is to disconnect. Is this damaging my motor or just not optimal?

POST 7Original post

Do you have an aftermarket radio or any other aftermarket parts? That would be my first place to look. I can't tell you how many radios get installed wrong and drain the battery.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Stock radio. But the light around the headlight switch stays illuminated all the time. And my door lock system is totally screwy. Not sure where to go with that. For now I need a fix that doesn't require me to open the frump and do a battery disconnect by hand every time. Anyone recommend a switch?

Do the gauge cluster lights also stays on? I would suspect the ignition switch and concentrate on that.
