Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I noticed yesterday that my oil pressure seems high. Rarely dropping below 3, and often near 5 or pegged. (40th AE, 3.6L X51) Then today, while working on my stereo (adding another ground), and testing the stereo, I noticed that the oil pressure was almost at 2. With the engine off. I haven't been able to reproduce that, well not after a test drive and getting it hot. But even off, the oil pressure is a little above zero (like it's not calibrated/indexed to zero). Finally, I am now showing high oil pressure all the time. Should I stop driving it until I have my indy look at it? Or is this a classic sign of sender failure? I don't have much of a space to work on this myself, I've read a lot of the articles about faulty senders, I'll probably just bring it to my indy. He's over an hour away though, so if this could be a sign of some failure that could hurt the engine, I don't want to drive it all the way to Temple. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Oil pressure can be pegged at 5 when cold and warming up. When completely hot, at idle, it should be between 0.75 and 2.0. When completely hot, it can be 4+ above 3,000 RPM. Is it 5 at idle when hot? Thats likely a problem, not normal. Its common for the gauge to read just above or below zero when off. These gauges can be off by 0.5-0.75 and considered normal. They arent that accurate.

POST 3Original post

Replace the sender. Common problem when. I had one go bad, read above 5 bad all the time except when engine was off. Replaced it and everything went back to normal.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all! Im really looking for do drive it or dont drive it until I get the sender replaced. Garage it or drive it? Are there other issues like oil passage blockage that could be doing this? I will call my indy on Monday. Hes very sharp and respected in the Central TX region. I appreciate everyones input.

POST 5Original post

This sensor is not coupled in with the engine systems, it's just for your viewing pleasure. A broken sensor will not suddenly make your engine starve for oil. It is literally just a number on your dash. It is not possible to hold 2 bar of pressure with the engine off (the anti-drainback valve of an oil filter - if you even have one - isn't nearly as trong), so it has to be the gauge, sender, or a leak-voltage onto the sensor wires. You can drive it just fine.

POST 6Original post

Agreed, drive it and ignore until you fix it. No need to rush.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all. I was sort of worried that the sender or gauge was coincidental to another problem. I'll see if my shop can take it in soon. Because the 2-bar thing was one time (that I noticed) but pressure being very high all the time isn't changing.

Why pay someone to replace such a simple part?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15727377

Fair question! First off, I've long since ditched my jack stands. I do have a decent hydraulic jack but haven't gotten any pucks yet (I could use a piece of wood I supposed to protect the car). But then I get to crawl under the car and figure out which tools like the crows foot wrench that I don't have, and spend a few hours cursing. Instead, I'll drive it up to my indy and work via my laptop until it's done. So basically I could buy a bunch of stuff I'll use rarely. I'm not into repair as much as I was when I was younger. I did do my stereo myself, no jack stands required (grin). His rates are good because he's not in the big city, and I trust him and his team.

POST 10Original post

Fair enough... You Tube So incase you change your mind

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It does look pretty easy. I'd need the car lifted significantly more (I'm 6'6" and pretty darned big).

POST 12Original post

I'm 6'2" and was able to use jack stands. Not only does it save a few bucks, it just feels good doing it yourself (most times).

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15729257

Haha, I was able to work under a low car when I was 18 and I was still 6'6". Problem is I weigh a good 40lbs more these days. I'll eventually get around to getting the right setup in my garage to do this type of work. In fact, the first incentive may be my next oil change, scheduled for July.

I here you. At 56 with a bad back, I too regret starting some projects (like my motor replacement with no lift) half way through...
