Regarding replacing the cables, there is absolutely no way that both cables stretched or gave up the ghost simultaneously.

You may have to replace some parts, but not an entire top.

Path of least resistance would be to just replace the top....for $9K!!!!!!!!!!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last fall I noticed when I close the convertible top, on both sides the top isn't seating correctly. Someone mentioned it might be the cables that have the little ring ends that thread through the edges of the top. Someone else mentioned the cables with the ball sockets that attached the top to the rear inside deck. I checked the ball socket cables, both are attached and look fine. Regarding replacing the cables, there is absolutely no way that both cables stretched or gave up the ghost simultaneously. Over the last few days, opening and closing the top, it seems to be getting worse. Pix attached. So, could it be the hook on the top latch itself that is worn out enough that it's not closing the roof as tightly as it should? Any ideas are welcome. FWIW, I took it to the local Porsche dealer/garage and they said, well, it's difficult to diagnose these things. Path of least resistance would be to just replace the top....for $9K!!!!!!!!!! Read my lips, $9K.
Greg,
If you like flushing money down the toilet, then by all means, go to a Porsche dealership, but in my opinion, a independent shop that specializes in convertibles can do a new top for about 1/3 of that price. I put a new OE top on my cabriolet for less than $3000. The top with the heated glass was about $2000. The rest is labor. Unless you really know what you're doing, I would never advice someone tackle this on their own. It takes a specialized shop with a Porsche PIWIS or Durametric to install and calibrate one of these things properly.
But the problem that you're showing doesn't require a full top replacement. I'm willing to bet the cable is off one of the connections or the cable itself needs replacement. You may have to replace some parts, but not an entire top. If you can get the convertible top in service mode, then you'll be able to examine the cable and connections. In many cases, people have fixed this problem on their own. Good luck!
Thanks, definitely not going to have it done by a Porsche dealership. What is perplexing is that both sides of the top are doing the same thing so, I can't imagine that both cables would have worn out or stretched at exactly the same time and approximately the same amount. In service position, all the cables are attached. While these tops are complex, this one can't be that tough to repair. I just haven't figured it out yet.
