Suggestion
I would recommend the regular GHLs, I think they sound pretty damn good on a 3.6 996, not too loud at all.

I have a 99 C2 and run 2003 3.6 muflers and have fulltime PSE.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Bought GHL 18 months ago, basically because of the sale price. Coke or Pepsi?

99 996
96 930
PS have Powerhaus headers and exhaust on the 930. It's like Formula 1 loud.
Both good mufflers, equal quality with a somewhat different sound. Fabs are a bit throatier (deeper) and louder with very mild resonance, GHLs are raspier with no (zero) resonance. IMO the regular GHLs sound just about perfect on a 3.6 996, can't comment on the louds but they are probably similar to Fabspeeds. All good, depends on what you want. Can't beat that Rennlist deal on GHLs!
Yes I agree, to see any difference over the stock headers you'll have to spend several thousand dollars on a true racing exhaust. That's why headers on a racing Porsche cost about $6K if you could even buy them.
Actually your car has a stock exhaust manifold, not headers. The difference is that with headers, the tube lengths are equal and all combine at the same point where as the manifolds are all differing lengths and combine where they are closest to the main tube.
Having said all that, I hear that there isn't much to be gained from them so save your money.
I would do the exhaust if only for the sound
No. A header is an individual tube off each exhaust port that ends into a collector, so by definition the 996 already has headers, though you are correct they are not equal length headers. There is a big difference between exhaust manifolds and headers, the 996 has a header IMO.
Yes, as opposed to a manifold where each of the ports exhaust into a common area, where intereference between gas streams increase back pressure (decrease efficiency).
What they said, a header by it's name implies a exhaust exit directly off the cylinder head for each individual cylinder. A exhaust manifold is a common channel. Hotrodding 101.
i vote fabspeed over ghl loud or regular. i've tried both and found the fabpeeds to be louder and throatier than the ghl loud. the loud version is not even that much louder than regular. i had hoped my order for the louds was wrong and mistakenly got regular but nope, got the louds.
if you want even louder AND the best sound PSE is still king.
Well I stand corrected. But I still say save your money and don't replace the stock headers.
If you really want that race car sound get bypass pipes. Now that's awesome!
Chances are that your existing muflers are PSE mufflers. Simply weld in a pipe between the outlet tube and provided outlet on the muffler. You now have fulltime PSE for $100 or less.
On most year's Porsche does not use a different muffler for stock and PSE exhaust. It is the same muffler. All they do is connect a pipe betwen pints and put a valve in the middle. I have a 99 C2 and run 2003 3.6 muflers and have fulltime PSE. Anyone with a welder can mod it for you.
1999 is right on, when I sold my PSE(early version) I took a very close look at it, it's VERY obvious all Porsche did was weld in a bypass pipe between the inflow and outflow pipes of an otherwise std muffler. The plasma cutting quality was pitifull, can't believe they have the ***** to charge what they do.
Or a std leather interior for that matter. They just took what they had in stock and had somebody make it louder. I bet they're laughing all the way to the bank.
rompe colleone....thats italian?
So now i am so confused whether i should even spend any money on the mufflers as there does not seem to be much of a difference....just leaves me money to spend on something else for the car...
have the champion RG5 lightweight wheels...brand new and dont like them...18's if someone is interested...just need to get a replacement now...looking at the PS dayton Iforged and some HRE...any comments? how about anthracite painted insides for a seal grey 996-02 cab?? suggestions please....
I would recommend the regular GHLs, I think they sound pretty damn good on a 3.6 996, not too loud at all. Plus you can't beat the price and the return policy.
return policy? honestly...how much better do they sound than stock? noticeable diffrerence? otherwise i will just take the money and buy more expensive wheels that i like....
Definitely louder than stock, about 50% I would guess, no drone or resonance. If you don't like the sound I believe you can return for a full refund in the first 2 weeks. The only thing you are out is the time for install and shipping. Nobody else will give you that deal. Call GHL and find out for yourself, Brian is a stand up guy.
i spoke to brian...really nice guy......think i will try them....dont like uninstalling installing etc....once i buy something it is mine for keeps.....just like being satisfied.....so i guess it seems worth it to buy them...how long so stock mufflers usually last? this forum is geat but also confusing me....some say do it some say dont...some say not worth a little extra sound that is not even noticeable.....love spending money on my porsches....need those wheels...that is what i have been working on for a while.....
