I recently bought a new console light for 1998 boxster Just got the car a few weeks ago and the light was missing It works fine but only with the key in the ignition moved to power on. With the key in, all three positions work as designed light comes on when i open the door in middle setting. Always on setting works off setting works, but only with the key in and turned. I believe the light should come on when I open the door before I get in the car. Any ideas, suggestions?

I just went out and tested mine to see what happens. No key in ignition. Open door and all overhead console lights come on. Buttons in center position. I sat in the car until the lights went out, then moved each button to check if the lights come on with no key in the ignition. They all work. Maybe you got the wrong overhead console light or it is hooked up wrong? Maybe it was missing because something else is wrong and somebody yanked it out? Maybe post in the Boxster forum because our 996's might be different?

The first thing to check with any electrical gremlins is the electrical portion of the key switch. This is a common failure point that can cause many problems.

By key switch do you mean the ignition switch, or the key itself I do not have the real wireless key, only what I believe is the valet key. Small key with one button... Not sure what it does
