Simon - I smelled the same odor a few months ago when Darin installed his side cans on my 991.

Also, the Gundo connection is way up on top of the mufflers, and once installed they look 100% stock, you have to take the bumper cover off to see the modification.

from start up it is louder than stock with more of deep sound and the volume increase is consistent with the RPM increase you get a real nice howl ,,if you want it really loud go 2.5 inch bypass ,,,I run a 1.75 inch bypass and it is perfect for me ..........makes the car sound how it should have from factory and considering mine cost me $200 and hours work best mod ever ...

Did gundo mod sounds great at higher rpm - I think an xpipe will be next mod - every two years Wisconsin test emission, really easy switch plug and play

I think the regular simple pipe bypass would be fine for me, however the car gets used for road trips with wife and with wife/son, so if they aren't happy about any noise I'll never hear the end of it, and going back and swapping mufflers again is something I don't want to do.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just picked up some 3.6 mufflers for a hack and swap out like so many have done here.
However a bit perplexed on the muffler tips, initially I thought they were off a C4S but I'm not so sure, does anyone know what these are from and if they will fit my stock 996.1? I don't want to trim the bumper any to fit them.
Also is there a pro/con for the gundo Vs fister, I marked up what I think the two mods are, green and red.
Edit - think I'll go with red, as the exhaust still passes through the can so less chance of drone, it emulates the PSE bypass
Those look the same as mine, 2002 996.2 cab. I chose the Gundo as the Fister connecting pipe was going to be a tight squeeze. I am quite happy with the results, no drone and quiet when cruising, but throaty when on the gas.
My only vote is for the Fister (green), read all the various posts on this site and I'm sure you will see that many (if not most) are Fister over Gundo. "No drone with the Fister"
Ditto here. The Gundo adds a nice rasp to the exhaust when accelerating but quiet the rest of the time. And those tips look just like the ones on my 2004 C2.
My understanding is the gundo hack is the same as the PSE but without a solenoid to turn it on and off. Since all exhaust still passes through at least part of the muffler, I'd expect it to be a little quieter than the Fister mod, but that's just a guess.
I just put Fister mufflers on my car last week (check out the thread I posted if you want to see a before/after video) and I'm very happy with them. There is no drone. They're also not overtly loud. With Fisters, your right foot is the volume control. You can cruise along and have it sound pretty much stock, but when you want to hear it just give it some gas and you'll get a growl.
Cheers
Charlie
We tried both, back to back and the Fister (green) was the clear winner - hands down. Better snarl and louder (but still mostly civil when you want it to be).
I have Fisters installed and know next to nothing about Gundos, but I'm comfortable stating that Gundos are terrible & likely cause O2 sensors to fail, throwing off the air/fuel ratio which will cause the car to run rich, which will then lead to cylinder lining corrosion - and an odds of favorite for a d-chunk'd cylinder.
But don't take my word for it, give the Gundos a shot!
Update to this. I got sucked into lots of home projects and repairing things (not car related) so side tracked.
I'm heavily leaning towards Fister mod but with the on/off valves installed, so I can run quiet if I want for long road trips.
Will update when my time frees up for more fun projects...
With the windows up, I don't really notice a difference between my fister mufflers and stock when driving at a constant speed or at idle. Its just when you put your foot down that the fisters come to life. If you get the switch, I bet you're going to have it on loud mode and never turn it off.
Consider this. There is a 50+ page thread of people debating what type of oil to use, and a similar thread about whether or not to cover the spoiler when washing your car. Yet the fister mod has virtually unanimous approval among everyone here. That's pretty incredible.
I can agree you would,nt need valves.............when cruising the Fister mufflers are quiet ,,they only come to life when you get on it ...and you get a classic flat six howl I have 1 inch and 3/4 bypass pipe on mine ,,love it ,,my video above is not a very good representation of the sound quality as it is filmed with and old iPhone 5
That is called PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust). Like others have alluded too, with a FisterD your foot is the on/off valve. Or look at Fabspeed for their version of PSE but it is crazy stupid money. I have actual Fisters and couldn't be happier. And maybe to offer some clarity regarding gundo or Fister......the gundo hack is just that, a hack. Take your cans to a muffler shop and have them weld in a pipe. It will look aftermarket because it is a crap shoot with what you will have in return. With the Fister you send your cans to them and you get them back looking very high quality and the music is unbelievable. They actually look oem if you didn't know any better.
Good luck!
ps......what oil do you use?
The exhaust valves are available on ebay for welding in. Looks like 2.5" is the smallest they make them in however.
I think the regular simple pipe bypass would be fine for me, however the car gets used for road trips with wife and with wife/son, so if they aren't happy about any noise I'll never hear the end of it, and going back and swapping mufflers again is something I don't want to do.
So adding the valves means I can dial back to stock if I want to.
Oh and I run castrol syntec but swapping to shell rotella T6 in the future
The Gundo "hack" actually replicates the way Porsche makes PSE, without the valve and on - off switch. The internal chambers in the muffler are the same and actually designed to work this way, just not connected unless you got that option.
I know that Fister does quality work, but their design just diverts a portion on the exhaust from the inlet of the mufflers to the tail pipe, where with the Gundo, all the exhaust still flows through the muffler. Also, the Gundo connection is way up on top of the mufflers, and once installed they look 100% stock, you have to take the bumper cover off to see the modification.
It's all a matter of what sound you want at the end of the day, but to say that Fister looks factory is not correct. The Gundo mod is the exact way Porsche does it for their PSE.
Whatever is on sale. Last oil change was Pennzoil Euro 5w40. Next one is Mobil 1 0w40, got a killer deal on some jugs. I would also use Titan, LiquiMoly or Fuchs as well but they don't go on sale very often.
I have a 2001 996 C4 and just had the Fister Mod done to it. A 2"Stainless Steel Pipe welded between the inlet and outlet...best modification i have done to date...the sound is AWESOME! I love it...either way you will be happy with the throatier sound...It makes it even more fun to drive

Is it loud enough is pretty subjective. I probably would have chosen to make it a bit louder for my personal preference, but then I'd have to worry about resale down the road. As it sits, I'm happy with the noise level, and not at all worried about a future buyer balking at it as a result (in fact, I think it will help).
If you have the windows or top open, you're going to notice it in more than just wide open throttle situations. In parking lots when you blip the throttle to get going from a start it has a nice growl - and you get some popping/gurgling. Same with downshifts, and in parking garages and tunnels its ridiculously awesome as well.
The Fister Mod is loud enough...it rumbles very nice at cold idle, is not too loud but I have to be honest I no longer turn the radio on as I like to hear the sound...I chose a 2" Stainless Steel pipe welded between the inlet and outlet...It is not crazy loud but you can hear it coming!!
Thanks for all the replies fellas, makes my decision easy, seems like 1.75 or 2 inch pipe are where I want to be. I do not want a "look at me im loud" sound. I am looking for something subtle with just enough bark, this seems to be it.
Had Fisters installed yesterday. I'm really enjoying the sound and it's definitely a worthwhile upgrade. As others have said the sound is subtle under normal driving but comes alive when you step on it. I need to be more careful because I can feel my driving becoming more aggressive to match the aggressive sound.
A weird side effect is my exhaust now smells like burnt popcorn, lol. Not sure if that's temporary though. I'll start checking the driveway for kernels.
I have fisters on my 99c2 and I get tagged for sound at Laguna Seca on 90 Db days. I don't think they are that loud but the sound ***** at the track seem to think so. 🤓
Did gundo mod sounds great at higher rpm - I think an xpipe will be next mod - every two years Wisconsin test emission, really easy switch plug and play
i believe the different "stages" mean the differnet size of the pipe. This was the response when I asked on FB what the "stages" meant. I do think 1.75" is standard.
Fister mods on two of my four P-Cars; the 993 4S Stage II Fisters sound like old school modified 930's - glorious indeed!. And on my 991 S Cab, same, Fisters. along with a PSE center muffler with vacuum lines disconnected. The 991 has a raspy growl and a cup car boom when on the throttle and upshifting. Love it.
No droning on either FD Motorsports mods. Plus Darin is a stand-up guy.
Simon - I smelled the same odor a few months ago when Darin installed his side cans on my 991. It went away in a couple days. Its might be his new super secret coating on the cans. At any rate, no kernels on my garage floor!
I recently switched from PSE Style mufflers (gundo) to Fister bypass style. Both were paired with my M&M Racing Catless X-Pipe. The picture below shows the difference between the two. I also made comparison videos with a quality Rhode Mic for you to hear the difference. Overall - The fister mufflers with the partial external bypass sounds amazing with the x-pipe. Slightly deeper tone and way more volume in person vs the PSE style mufflers. Both setups have no drone.

I have done straight pipe with baffles, fister and gundo.
Straight pipe with car chemistry 3 disk baffles, very loud no drone at 3100 rpm but too loud in the cabin for a 6 hour drive.
Gundo, too quiet, not much more than stock unless I stepped on on it.
Fister - PERFECT !!!! Bypass the muffler !! Extra nice low rumble at idle, the neighbors hear you coming but not annoyingly so. Very good rrrraaaaaAAAAAPPPPP when I step on it. Quiet at cruising speed ( 80mph and have conversation with no problem), but good volume during acceleration.
