yea it was the reason i got the car for the price of a roller.

The next time I changed the oil I found some fairly deep scratches on the bottom of the skid plate.

A little extra cleaning time is a great trade-off to replacing a broken sump.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

my 2002 has a skid plate. It wasnt on the car from the factory, but it is a porsche branded part. With an extended sump and x74 suspension height, it is a valuable addition.
I put a 2 quart deep sump on my 99 recently. Spend the $300 on the skid plate if you install one. The sump is now the lowest point at the rear of my car. I have scraped the skid plate several times all ready.
Same. When I first got the LN kit, their skid plates were not fitting (they sent me 2, both did not fit). I was super paranoid driving the car, especially with curbing on the track. Finally got a used skid plate, put it on before my last event. I was out playing in the rain, and spun, and backed up over the curbing that had a drop. The skid plate saved me.
On a car using a stock pam, you are a bit more safe.
Interesting responses. So is it safe to say that a 996 with stock height, no deep sump and only being used on the public roads does not really need it?
Mine came without one and it was one of my first purchases.
About 6 months ago I was pulling into a parking lot. (Micro Center in Houston)
To do so I had to cross over some roadwork.
My car bottomed out in the rear due to the incline.
The next time I changed the oil I found some fairly deep scratches on the bottom of the skid plate.
I had to REALLY think back to when it could have happened.
It likely saved me that day.
I'm going to put the 2qt deep sump on my car during the next oil change and will be buying the LN skid plate that's designed for the deep sump.
I'll have a used and scratched skid plate for sale in a couple of months.
I'll be installing the ROW M030 suspension shortly (already have the kit) and the skid plate was a mandatory add before that. A little extra cleaning time is a great trade-off to replacing a broken sump. Esp with the condition of the streets in my town.
yea it was the reason i got the car for the price of a roller. Got about 2k on the repair so far with no issues.
My local indy would buy skids for all the 996's that were brought in back in the day. He told them that the skid would be free if when they returned for their next oil change it was free of damage. He said he never had to give one away.
I was in your shoes. ROW M030 suspension and crappy roads.
It turns out the M030 suspension doesn't lower the car much but the roads are still crappy and the cover is cheap enough.
Hahaha! Maybe not a thousand words, but certainly a lot of gibberish.

Since your whole post is gone...
You insert that and then run the hex socket in the middle and the oil flows out without making a mess?
What size is that/where can I get one?
Ill put you at the top of the list, Ill make you an awesome deal.
But if you find one sooner, Ill understand!
I checked earlier, Im about 1100 miles away from an oil change.
So only about 1 month from now.
Ill be ordering the 2qt deep sump next week, along with the LN skid plate.
Yep,no mess. I cut it just below the barbed section and press fit it into the oil drain hole, Home Depot, or most plumbing supply shops should carry them for a couple of dollars. Sorry I don't remember if it is 1 1/2" or 1 1/4", a quick measure of the hole would confirm.
TexSquirrel, If 808Bill is not entrusted I may be. I have not been in the market for one but after reading this thread it sounds like a good idea to install one.
Thanks from another Tex
Ok, if he doesnt want it Ill let you know.
I hope to order everything this coming week or the next.
That way Ill have it ready for my next oil change at the end of October or early November
I received my LN Engineering deep sump skid plate today to replace the one that I currently own.
If you’re thinking about buying a $300 skid plate for your 996...WAIT.
I‘ll do a full review and comparison with pictures this Friday.
My car is lowered, but I had low tire pressure in my rear tire when I bought my car. With some spirited driving on the back roads, I went to my friend's shop and noticed that I scraped up my oil pan. I bought a skid plate after that.
Thanks guys, I just realized that I have been a 4x4 truck owner for too long and never worry about these problems. Now you have opened my eyes yet again. I'll be purchasing one soon: Cheap insurance for my lack of thinking always pays off.
