Your PO's issue may be that the normal LS swap is an LS3 (6.2L) or earlier gen swaps typically used the LS1 (5.7 L).
Leading evidence: 'Use ls1 (5.7 l)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run ill wait a while' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good Evening,
I recently found a 1999 Porsche 911 roller with a clean title, he wants 6k. My problem with this not only is it expensive for a roller but he was trying to do a LS swap on it and is offering to include the 5.3 he bought for it. I really love the look of coup 911's and the Porsche engine so I am curious if buying this project 911 is a complete mistake for 6 thousand or a decent price for a roller. Additional information; Repainted lambo orange, has 997 shifter cables, and is on air ride. His reason for selling is too many projects and doesnt have the mounting brackets.
Since you all are experts on the 996 should I stay away or dive in to correct the issues. My mechanical knowledge is not really automotive, work on helicopters for a few years now. Plans are to rebuild a 3.4l to support more power
The biggest challenge I see with projects like this is you would be purchasing a modified car. Without having a lot of experience you don't have a solid baseline to start with. When you encounter a problem will it be because of previous modifications or the result of your work? It will difficult to know.
$6000 for a very good condition complete roller is not a bad price if you like the color and it has the options you want.
My roller was 4500 and 1g to ship east from wa state. Mine has a couple grand in track/street parts, near mint interior, a full areo 2 kit and a nice glass out paint job. The po landed on the apron on the track and ther was minor damage to the bottom of the frunk and he cracked the motor. I straigten the front, got a new rad for it and welded the engine skirt, now i have a driver for around 8500k and 2k of that was wheels and tires. My intention was to do a ls swap but with it running ill wait a while. I dont think 6k is that bad but it depends on the extras. If u r on the east coast i might be interested i the 5.3l
OP...I'll chime in as I'm working on an LS swap right now on a 2002 996.2 C2. My roller was $6K w/ 100k miles. I think that was a very fair price, but it was also original paint and I would term it an 8.5 to 9 overall.
Your PO's issue may be that the normal LS swap is an LS3 (6.2L) or earlier gen swaps typically used the LS1 (5.7 L). A 5.3 L LS would be either an aluminum LS 4 out of a front engined Impala SS or Grand Prix, or in iron block LS truck engine. In either case, not much use in making those swaps as the whole idea of the swap is a higher power, weight neutral power plant. The LS4 made 303HP and the truck engine would hang a boat anchor out behind your rear axles.
Given the apparent lack of planning and budget orientation of his build, I would likely pass on this roller. If you are looking for a roller, they seem to range for $6-8K depending on condition. I looked at the red 996.1 above too. Take your time and you will find the right car. I know there is one on RL now (cab) that the owner is considering selling. Looks like a pretty car. Just sayin.
De Jeeper, That was a great find at $4500....If I knew I would have bought it.
For the OP.... A great local dismantler here in Washington that specializes in Porsche is
