Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check rules' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'coil is bad' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check rules' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Installed a Gurney flap on the wing and raised it using Demon Speed uprights.

I suspect a coil is bad but the issue only appears when it's very hot.

I replaced all the coils 2 years back, but I suspect they should be replaced regularly given the additional heat and vibration of racing.
Replace coils and wheel bearings regularly if you are

The Lime Rock PCA Club Race last weekend was a blast, and although there were no other Spec 996s, there were lots of quick H,I and J class cars with similar performance, so there was a lot of competition in the Yellow run group.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First DE and Club Race coming up at Lime Rock later this week. Wish I could say the weather is cooperating, but it's not. Car is well sorted now, so just did some maintenance (Joe Gibbs oil, new filter, fresh front rotors, new pads and fresh brake fluid) and a few minor tweaks. Installed a Gurney flap on the wing and raised it using Demon Speed uprights. Wing should be more efficient (more downforce and less drag) and I can finally see out the back window with the additional 4" height. Can't wait to get on track!
Season prep done, time to get out there.
Home Depot angle aluminum + 3M 2-sided body tape
3-M tape is incredibly strong.
Gained visibility out the rear with taller uprights.
Demon Speed makes these.
Great work on the wing! The visibility thing always bugged me. On the wing angle, I found that less is more but your experience may very.
Few people realize how quick these cars are around the track. What weight are you at?

Spec class, 996 lightly (relative) modified to compete against similarly prepped stockish vehicles. Makes it harder to buy speed.
Check out page the 37th page of the rule book. It goes over what's allowed and what's not. I never ran into a street GT3 that didn't have to give my SP996(well, GTB1 technically) a point by.
Intersting that is says stock exhaust is allowed, but it looks like the OPs car has the mufflers removed? Cat removal is allowed, but the OPs car looks like it has Cats?
Also, what about oil system mods, such as swirl pots? Isnt the stock swirl pots a known 996 m96 deficiency?
Thanks for all the comments and questions, I'll try to put together the answers. The Lime Rock PCA Club Race last weekend was a blast, and although there were no other Spec 996s, there were lots of quick H,I and J class cars with similar performance, so there was a lot of competition in the Yellow run group. The car ran exceptionally well, and I had a fast lap of 0:58.67 - a personal best and I finally broke the 1 minute barrier!! Qualified 7th for the first sprint race and finished 3rd overall. Started 4th in the second sprint and ended up 6th or 7th I believe. (Got smoked on a restart and was about 12th for a lap or two but let's say I 'got by' 6 cars in the lap following the restart - not pretty but hey). The raised wing (Demon Speed provided these) made a big difference in both performance - the wing is now in clean air and is pretty flat, and in safety - I had a clear mirror shot of activity behind me when I needed it. The custom exhaust (KMC in Lawrence MA) is fabricated from SS tubing (scavenging design with increasing diameter pipe after the OE exhaust header) and off the shelf Magnaflow mufflers (no CAT). It adds considerable torque up to about 6800RPM, where it tapers off rapidly when compared to an open exhaust. This works well for me - the light weight (2710 lbs without driver) makes the car very quick in the corners and the added torque helps it squirt out of the turns really fast. The battles on the track were classic fast in the turns (me) vs. fast on the straights (the heavier 3.6L cars). Lots of video footage showing these battles and the struggle to get an opening for a pass! Murphyslaw 1978 - the car has the LN engineering .5Q deep sump and X50 baffle for oiling improvements. Slakker is right - this setup beats any stock 2004-5 GT3, and many track prepped ones as well.
Warmed up in the afternoons.
All these 3.6L 996s in my way in the turns!! AIM was down - lost OBD feed apparently.
Setting up a pass on LRP's infamous downhill with close observation from behind (see mirror). It worked!
Nice work! Sometimes I glimpse down that rabbit hole of competitive powersports, and then remember how all encompassing it becomes. But once you've been in there, it's hard not to yearn for that feeling again! Sounds like a great weekend.
Car has been gone through, brakes bled, transmission oil changed, additional weight removed (now at 2688 lbs.dry) and a few minor tweeks made. Windshield visor added as well as a secret weapon to improve starts. Had a blast running with the H,I and J cars at LRP and hope to do the same at WGI coming up 6/1-6/3. Any other SP996 cars headed to the Glen this year? Beuller?
Amazing. Love the rear bumper and exhaust outlet. I've seen more and more SP996 here in NorCal, and hope the trend continues. Sub'd for future updates and posts!
Mixed results at the Watkins Glen Club Race. Car was a bit slower than last year, so I spent some time chasing possible causes. No error codes on the Duramatic, but it was very hot out on practice day and there was a new misfire at idle. I suspect a coil is bad but the issue only appears when it's very hot. I replaced all the coils 2 years back, but I suspect they should be replaced regularly given the additional heat and vibration of racing. Sprint race day was much cooler but I was still about 1.25sec off my best times at the Glen (2:07.25). And what was a faint rumble when turning right in Sprint 1 became a loud rumble and then sounded like a freight train (with some distinct vibration) by lap 5 of Sprint 2 so I had to pack it in. Lesson: Replace coils and wheel bearings regularly if you are running the car at the limits... cheap insurance. Had a blast at the event, great to see friends and as always, a well run PCA event. Congratulations to Steve Schindler from Vermont - he took First Place in SP996 with his fast, very well-driven 3.6L car. There were over 250 cars racing last weekend, and even on a long track like WGI, the action was pretty constant. Some groups were so big they did a split start!
