If you pull the switch you can check for voltage on the connector pins while moving the switch to various positions.

Hello, I have a 2000 996 Carrera 4 convertible and recently have noticed that neither the high or low beam headlamps are functioning at all. Turning the headlight switch all the way right only turns on the parking/running lamps. Pulling the switch out makes the fog lights work but the headlights do not turn on. Flashing the high beams tilts the headlights into the high beam position but the lamps themselves do not turn on. I was thinking it may be a headlight switch as others have suggested but wouldn't the lamps still come on when flashing the high beams? I read somewhere that the flash position overrides the headlight switch but I am not sure. The dealership vaguely looked at it when the car was in recently and said it might be the high beam stalk but they didn't look very far into it. Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

I had this problem and had to replace the switch. The local shop said it was a common problem. They had the switch in stock so I guess I was not the first.

Are your headlights halogen or litronic? Seems like from your description they are litornics (since they tilt). Obviously, check all the fuses for the headlights first. If you pull the switch you can check for voltage on the connector pins while moving the switch to various positions. That should tell you what is happening at the switch.

You would have to troubleshoot using the wire diagrams. Are you having other electrical issues? A new ignition switch is very cheap and easy to replace.
