I'm poised to replace an awful aftermarket single din head unit with a double din android thingy <gasp> but would really like to introduce steering wheel control.

How realistic is it to replace the original 3 spoke airbag wheel with a 997 multifunction one?

Now if you could figure out all the pinouts and install an oem 997 head unit, it' might be feasible provided the oem 997 wiring is such that the steering wheel controls run directly to the oem HU and not through some other part of the loom first.

Yo can get the 997-991 steering wheel to fit the shaft using an adaptor from an early Audi, but then the steering column covers do not line up even closely, would have to be completely redesigned.

Suggestion
Depending on the head unit you want to use, as long as you have the switches on the steering wheel to control the stereo, you can use a universal control unit from PAC.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

How realistic is it to replace the original 3 spoke airbag wheel with a 997 multifunction one? I see a few "No" posts on the interweb, but none that explain the issue. Different splines maybe?
Cheers,
Z

- but it looks like there are other issues too. Any insight is appreciated.
Getting the hub splines to line up is one thing, integrating oem steering wheel audio controls (in a car not equipped) to an aftermarket audio system is a whole other ball of wax. I've never seen an aftermarket HU w/ pinouts for hardwired external controls, so it'd most likely require you to go inside the head unit to tap various boards after you got a schematic of exactly what does what inside (good luck finding that). Not impossible, but there's a reason you haven't found any posts on the interweb, it's likely never been done.
Now if you could figure out all the pinouts and install an oem 997 head unit, it' might be feasible provided the oem 997 wiring is such that the steering wheel controls run directly to the oem HU and not through some other part of the loom first.
Depending on the head unit you want to use, as long as you have the switches on the steering wheel to control the stereo, you can use a universal control unit from PAC. I have use them before and work great. easy to use and follow the install instructions. I haven't looked to see if they have one for the 997 that could be used.

This concerns me too. Superficially, the triangular recess appears similar in shape but that's a world away from compatibility. Anyone have info/experience of this?
